- The Dungeons & Dragons movie Honour Among Thieves is out! We’ve chatted a fair bit on the channel about the bard Edgin and his party of fellow adventurers, from what we loved and hated, to JARNATHARN and beyond. Now though, for all those spellcasters out there we’re getting into the important stuff and that is each and every spell cast throughout the D&D movie. From magic items with special powers, to sorcerous hijinks and even THAT battle scene, Liv has picked out what exactly everyone is casting so you too can make a statue come to life or make it smell like fresh cut grass in your next 5e game exactly like Simon or Sofina.
All footage used from Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is being featured for commentary and falls under “fair use”, however, it belongs to Paramount Pictures, Entertainment One, Allspark Pictures and Hasbro.
Remember to make sure you're subscribed and that you leave a comment to be in with a chance of winning one of those two Icewind Dale books. They were given to us for review and now they need a good home.

Simon isn't casting Bigby's Hand. It's Maximilian's Earthen Grasp. It perfectly fits the spell's description. From being made it the same type of earth it was pulled from (cobblestone), to being reformed with a bonus action the first time it's smashed
It doesn't act like an earthen grasp though. He can manipulate and control it freely, it doesn't just come up from the ground and grapple a target
@@TheGIJew. The caster can move the hand as an action as well, and Bigbys hand is the target that hes grappling.
plus it's a lower level spell in comparison to Bigby's Hand, which makes sense for the power difference between Simon and Sofina
Its Bigby's Hand. They released character sheets for all the characters, and Simon has Bigby's on his spell list and not Earthen Grasp. His and Sofina's hands just have different aesthetics, that's why they look different.
@@timschneider6687 He is using Max' spell. In his character sheet they put Bigby's out of core content (Bigby's core, Max' is supplement).
I’m glad you mentioned bardic inspiration! I liked they way they handled bard in this movie. It was a very subtle “I find you strangely compelling right now” instead of an in-your-face spell casting ability.
Wow, I couldn't disagree more. I think the barred was done HORRIBLY. I love everything else about the film, but they felt inept or lost with utilizing the bard. He was more like the leader of the A Team than a bard imo.
Yea, Austin's right. The bard didn't even try to f**k anything.
@thelocust619 To be fair he's a grieving father not a typical bard that's in heat in front of anything.
@The Epic Duck Yea yea, all that means is he's single now
10:57 I think Simon cast Scorching Ray there. Firebolt's damage increases as you get more powerful but it doesn't do extra bolts, and a twin spell would only send 2 instead of three, Scorching Ray does 3 blast at its basic level (which I think is 2nd?).
I figured it was Magic Missile, since the spell adds more darts the more spell slots you have and (at least in the Baldur's Gate games) a high-level version can shoot three missiles at once.
thought the same thing! also i'm fairly certain that what they call chaos bolt is supposed to be magic missle. it's depicted as red to pink in most media but it doesn't say so in any description +sofina blocks it completly with her shield (which is something the shield spell does specifically)
@@AdderTude scorching ray works the same way but needs an attack roll, try it in the game it's a very solid attack/ singletarget spell, a bit more damage but without the guarantied hit! And it's NOT stopped fully by shield XD
@@AdderTude I am pretty sure they are referring to 55 not 49
I love to see that even in the official D&D movie, there is space for homebrew spells and class abilities (like Doric's everchanging wild shapes). This exposes the very inner core of D&D: to do things yourself, and have fun with your friends!
My headcanon is that Doric is an Archdruid
👏👏👏👏
I've been convinced since I first saw it that Simon casts Maximillian's earthen grasp, not bigby's hand, since it is connected to the ground and just grabs the other hand.
My fav spell moment in the movie was definitely when Simon’s illusion started to fail
A bloke in the seat behind me was giggling all the way through the next scene over that 😆
I like how magic was everywhere in the film and that they went for a show not tell approach with it
It was a super fun movie, and this was a great break down. I think that during the meeting with Forge and the rich dudes, Sophia seems to be concentrating on something. It takes a bit of time to discover the intruder (just long enough to get the information they need, conveniently), and I personally think it was "detect thoughts". And then possibly "see invisibility" to check for an invisible enemy. When she doesn't see anyone, and because she is a wicked smart magic user, she comes to the conclusion of a shapeshifter... Just a thought.
I am pretty sure 55 was Scorching Ray, not Fire Bolt, since it was 3 rays. Also I in the hand battle, I think Simon used Maximillian's Earthen Grasp, not Bigby's Hand. I am pretty sure Xenk used Speak with Animals (oath spell for oath of the ancients) to convince the fish to release the tabaxi.
A ray is a continuous beam, like Aganazzar's Scorcher. I figured that was a high-level Magic Missile since three shots were fired at the same time.
@@AdderTude Aganazzar's Scorcher is not a continuous beam, it's basically just fire version of lightning bolt. Only spell in whole 5e that could be considered firing a continuous beam is Witch Bolt.
At 9:53 I'm pretty sure Sofina casts Watery Sphere there, not Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, for a number of reasons.
1. The sphere looks like it is made of water (this can be seen most clearly when it bursts).
2. Otiluke's Resilient sphere can't be moved by the caster, while watery sphere can.
3. Otiluke's Resilient sphere can only contain one creature, not 2, while watery sphere can trap up to 4 medium creatures.
Im going to have to disagree with you friend. The Watery Sphere is a sphere of complete water, both players were able to breath and scream while in the sphere. Additionally the sphere is a floating conjuration with a 5 foot radius, which means it would be far larger than we see (able to occupy 4 tiles. I will point out Resilient Sphere could technically fit both players in it due to the target only having to be one player, and the maximum size of said player can be large. Which 2 players would technically be considered large. She also doesn't move the orb the thing just start rolling on its own, and bouncing. Again Watery Sphere floats, therefore cannot bounce. And finally when the spell ends it can extinguished a fire, which is another indicator that when it bursted, if it was in fact Watery Sphere there should have been a puddle of water and wet players. But there wasn't. Regardless, it was a sick use of the spell, if it was either one lol, and it was a great and fun movie through and through haha.
As Xalonus pointed out, it quite literally says in the spell that Resilient Sphere can be moved by the victim pushing against the wall (for up to half their movement speed... though in this case it gained momentum and started rolling on its own).
The sphere itself is weightless, so assuming you're strong enough to lift up the victim/s inside it, you can actually pick the sphere up without worry.
Watery Sphere can ONLY be moved by the caster, not those inside it, and only by 30ft at a time. It's not subject to momentum.
This movie was such a love letter to D&D and you could see every dice roll! Loved it to bits
Speaking of dice rolls, I love how Simon, the charisma-based caster immediately fails a persuasion check after his thievery of his audience is discovered lol
Edgin was absolutely performing Bardic Inspiration. And Doric’s owl bear transformation was just a house rule :)
I was _just_ thinking that I'd like a break-down of the spells used in Honor Among Thieves - and here it is! Thanks so much, you guys!
I was really execting D&D:HAT do just be a basic fantasy movie so seeing it be such a true roleplaying movie was a huge delight
This movie was everything I hoped it would be. Thanks for the awesome breakdown of the spells!
Xenk's use of Divine Sense sent my Paladin playing ass into hype world! 🥵
Until I become oath breaker for the dumbest reasons
Honor among thieves was excellent. A great, light, fun romp that functions as a jumping on point for non-players and a sincere love letter to fans.
Can't wait to see what more they bring out now that the concept has proven viable!
Great video! I really enjoyed the film but I definite missed a few of those spells. All the more reason to watch it again!
Personally, I haven't seen their stat blocks but I like to think of the spells like this:
#1, Kira's necklace isn't casting Invisibilty, its acting like a Ring of Invisibility.
#2, Simon cast Fog Cloud to block the chasing guard's vision, not Gust of Wind.
#3, Simon could be casting Magnetism, but he later says that he knows telekinesis, so telekinesis seems more likely.
#4, That could be Holy Weapon, but I think Magic Weapon is more likely since it's in the Players Handbook
#5, Since Sofina later casts Time Stop using her 9th level spell slot, the fiery meteors would be Melf's Minute Meteors, which has six meteors instead of four
#6, ok that is clearly Animate Objects and not Polymorph
#7, Since Chaos Bolt only shoots one bolt, this spell should be Magic Missile, 3 blasts of force damage.
#8, Many people think that Simon's hand spell looks more like Maximilian's Earthen Grasp, I think so as well.
#9, If you look closely you can see Simon actually casts 5 bolts of white energy, some are blocked by Sofina's shield. Maybe upcasted Scorching Ray with the sorcerer ability to change the damage to cold?
#10, Simon casts Scorching Ray, firing off one, two, three bolts!
#11, Xenk used divine sense
Misty Step is definitely my favorite spell. Must have!
I was trying to keep up with the use of spells, but got completely lost. Nice to get an elaboration.
Can tell I play a Monk as I only spotted a handful watching the film so this is great prep and very entertaining
Definitely thought Simons spells were magic missiles, but seeing less than one, a bolt makes more sense
It is so much fun watching people nerd out about stuff!
I would say there's an argument to be made that Edgin casts Charm person and other influential spells throughout the movie
To cool down the tea wasn't prestidigitation. It was chill touch.
I enjoyed the movie sooo much! I really do they were trying to reference CR with the whole fresh cut grass
A great video! It's so interesting seeing how the spells we use in our games are used in the films! Well done on working them all out, especially in the last battle!
In the opening flashback, Simon was almost certainly casting Fog Cloud.
Thoroughly enjoyed the film. Great analysis of the spells.
Thank you for sharing it.There were a lot of them used in the movie.
Think I agree with others, that Simon cast Earthen Grasp rather than Bigby's Hand in the final battle. It definitely seemed to fit the spell description. Thanks for a great video!
This was a wonderful bit of fun, and I appreciate the mention of the character sheets that were made for the movie characters, there is some really interesting character bits in them!
This is exactly the video I was hoping someone would make. Thanks and good luck on the way to 100k!
Notable, when Simon successfully counterspells the time stop at the end of the film, it’s likely that it was upcast for a lower dc given the line “I’ve gotten stronger since then” or whatever the exact line is
11:32 i think to help fool Sofina, when Simon tries to counterspell a second time he casts it with subtle spell as to avoid needing any somatic or verbal parts so he can still playing along with the trick.
I think Simon used the Subtle Spell metamagic to cast the final Counterspell against Sofina undetected.
Man, I loved this film. It even inspired my next D&D character I'm going to play!
Hi there, thanks so much for your comment, you've won the alternate cover Icewind Dale book! Send us an email over on contact@dicebreaker.com and we'll get your book sent out to you! Congrats!
Great video! Loved the movie! Especially the use of the staff to make the portal on the painting to get into the wagon and vault.
Really loved the movie, my party and I made a day of it and went straight from the cinema into a D&D session of our own. Would love to see more from Edgin and co in the future
Love the reference to Mordenkainen - good 1E vibe.
I'm just happy the movie was wildly fun and inspired me into getting my D&D groove back on!
I honestly loved this movie it was so much fun. Thanks so much for the breakdown of spells used. I've been trying to work them all out.
One of my favourite parts of the movie was the speak with dead scenes!
I think another honorable mention could’ve been the breath attacks from the two dragons seen in the film
Just like Egbert, nobody could be bothered to use Healing Hands at any time 😢
Its rare I see films multiple times but this one had me see it 3 times and enjoy it everytime!
Great vid and gratz on 100k!
speak with dead was my favorite
Solution to everything: Wildshape... so so much wildshape
I was looking for this video!
10:38 Simon wouldn't be able to twin Chaos Bolt as the spell can technically target more than 1 creature if the conditions are met.
thanks for the video. I had so much fun watching this movie, I'm glad its gettign so much love from folks.
Hi there, thanks so much for your comment, you've won the original Icewind Dale book! Send us an email over on contact@dicebreaker.com and we'll get your book sent out to you! Congrats!
I specifically searched for this video, thank you for delivering!
a very fun video! i'm not a d&d player myself so most of the easter eggs and homages (except the owlbear) went over my head, but i highly enjoyed the movie and immediately rushed to google to see if anyone made an article listing all the spells because i found it so interesting! so thanks for this video.
Great video!
This was fun, nice to see they really made an effort researching spells for the film.
I would argue that Edgin does use Charm Person in the prison talking to the parole board. He does talk with his hands often, and the spell only has verbal and somatic components. It may have been the back up plan when Jarnathan wasn’t there.
10:56 That third firebolt hit the druid 😅
I took time out of my (temporarily) insane schedule for this film, first film in 8 months, just so they'd make more. We want MORE!
Great breakdown! I didn’t see any comments about this, but although I originally thought that the assassin was using green flame blade, but I personally thing that it is a re-flavored flame tongue. First, with green flame blade, the blade only catches fire when the attack happens, but the assassin lights it when he draws it, it stays lit, and in his battle with Xenk, Xenk grabs the blade and it seems to burn him even without being swung. Just a personal opinion.
Thanks for the video! Movie is awesome.
I was so glad this film turned out to be so fun, hope to see some more great stuff coming from this!
Glad I caught most of them while watching! Nonetheless, I'm also glad this video exists, so I could learn the one I didn't get :D
Edgin is even a bard, he's just a rogue with bardic inspiration and a lute proficiency
Excellent review
They did a nice job of not making the mechanics heavy handed
Could Simon have been using Mage Hand for his pickpocketing antics?
I've never played a sorcerer, so this question might have an obvious answer to folks who know the rules, e.g. casting two cantrips simultaneously. But from what I gather, Mage Hand could conceivably do everything we saw in that scene.
Regardless, this was a fun and informative video, and I felt that the film handled magic really well. I'll look forward to what they do next, whether they decide to stick with the current band of misfits or start exploring different aspects of Forgotten Realms lore.
I think it was a good decision to not do spell namedrops in the movie in order to avoid overloading non-DnD folk with too much jargon.
Great video! I'd say the rule of cool was also used in this film
i had such a grin on my face when we left that movie - this is how mage battles should be done, not with random brightly coloured light beams shooting from wands like frickin laser tag
I remember a couple folks suggesting that Edgin was also using Calm Emotions on Holga right after she visited her ex casting it through the song!
Brilliant! I was trying to name all the spells myself when I watched it, but I don't know D&D quite that well yet. It would have been nice to see you give the number of unique spells used, rather than find a number that works for a good title, but I suppose that's the algorithm for you.
Wow, this must have been an impressive amount of work to note down all of the times a spell seemed to be cast, considering the film isn't out on dvd or streaming yet. I can just imagine Liv going to the cinema with her notepad for the 8th time just to double-check and confirm the list.
Some much love went into this movie and one aspect I really like was how they did their back stories. Normally backstories are more or less layered in during most movies over the course of the run time. In most D&D session it is kind of like "Ok exposition the shit out of your background all at once right now so everyone at the table knows what they are dealing with". Everyone got those 2-3 minutes of literally just reading off their back ground. Was a nice little nod that I appreciated. Also how Xenk was almost robotic in his NPC like nature and replies. Since he was a DMPC placed in meant to drive the story forward. Even him walking in a straight line at the beach walking over the rock rather then around it. As he was single focus minded.
I'm kind of wondering if Edgin's casting Friends while he's persuading people.
I am glad you gave an honorable mention to Bardic Inspiration! I really enjoyed how they portrayed that in the film!
I absolutely loved the film and it was great to see that it piqued my wife’s interest in D&D to the extent that she’s now considering joining in a one-shot campaign with my friends and I!
I feel like if the hither-thither staff counts as casting arcane gate, then the sending stones should count as casting sending when that's literally what it does.
During the final encounter Simon casts scorching ray, not firebolt. It fires three rays, all of which unfortunately miss, one with a nat 1 maybe because it looks like one of them glances on Doric.
I always thought that time stop accelerates the caster to a very high speed instead of actually stopping the surroundings.
I Wonder how many wild magic surges there were
The only people casting actual spells were arcane casters. I think they did that to showcase class abilities so everyone was unique. Druid wildshapes. Bard inspires. Barbarian rages. Sorcerer and wizard cast spells. Also worth noting, you can light a candle with prestidigitation.
Simon mentions that he can use telekinesis durring the bridge scene so he was probably using that to pickpocket those people
I think the Bard might’ve been using some spells more subtly than we usually think of them. Maybe as a result of his Harper training?
The Bard was a Rogue, my friend ;)
@@gordongreene7360 not to my eyes, ol’ pal 🤫 seemed like a low lvl Whispers Bard to me. I even took a look at his stat block on DNDBeyond, says he’s a Bard. There’s even spells listed, but they aren’t showy ones: Friends, Message, Charm Person, Disguise Self, Suggestion.
@speculativemusings3593 oh no way!! I had no clue, that's sick. My theory has been a Rogue with the Entertainer background, but a Whispers Bard makes loads of sense!
Did he have calm emotions? I feel like he used it on Holga after she was talking to her ex.
If someone in Faerun blasts a juicy fart, would you tell them "Nice wind Dale!"
That frostmoure is looking me in the eyes with kill parent energy
Always appreciate another Welshie :D
I loved this movie. It captured the essence of D&D perfectly.
I dragged 5 intially reluctant family members & friends along with me & they loved it too!
I did like how they interpreted the spells in the movie. The Speak With Dead sequence played out brilliantly. Especially the mid-credits scene.
Thank you for this. I was wondering what spell had them trapped in the first scene with forge. Trasmute Rock, huh. Would never have guessed.
The wagon heist was the standout sequence in the film. It was so good that the confrontation with Sofina (as enjoyable as that was) couldn't match it.
Pretty sure 49 was a magic missile that missed because of the fact that Sophina cast shield, also I am almost certain that 55 was scorching ray given that there were three rays of fire with a single spell.
From what I had found , the Reverse Gravity Spell happened due to Wild Magic Surge.
Loved wildshaping into the owlbear 😁😍 I think Doric was my favourite character in the movie 😅
I wish they had emphasized Edgin’s spells/abilities more as not seeing any indication of them really makes him feel less bardic. Super fun movie though!
Reverse Gravity is a great idea for what Simon does... with only 2 real drawbacks.
1) Reverse Gravity isn't something you can roll on the Wild Magic table.
2) Concentration-based spells cast through Wild Magic don't require concentration to maintain, and always last the full duration. Thus, he couldn't have just dropped the spell whenever he wanted.
As much as I loved the movie for its sticking to details as per the games, this was one instance of "Rule of Cool" writing, as opposed to "Rules as Written".
Also, for a sorcerer who can't even attune to magical items, I highly doubt Simon was Lv13 or higher (aka, able to cast 7th level spells like Reverse Gravity, even by accident)
The fresh cut grass thing is not a Critical Role reference. According to Wikipedia, D&D: HAT filming took place between April and August 2021, while Campaign 3 of CR didn't start until October of 2021. Unless Sam Riegel gave the film makers a clue several months in advance, there's no way it could be a reference.
I think the second instance of Chaos Bolt is right, but the first I thought was Magic Missile based in the fact it launches 3 bolts, not 2 like a twin spelled Chaos Bolt.
Still need to find time to watch it... But nice collection of spells. Haven't come across half of them yet 😅
The potential difficulties of attunement was a really interesting idea that I'm considering putting into my own games. Maybe clear a sort of Attunement check using the spellcasting modifier?
I like the idea of using it with sentient items, you have to convince them you're worth attuning to
