Fun fact: our galaxy, the Milky Way, is a barred spiral galaxy. It was suspected to be such since the 1960s but it wasn't confirmed until 2005, thanks to observations made by the Spitzer Space Telescope.
Great video but I do miss Brady asking questions and adding commentary. It makes the video feel more like a discussion rather than a lecture. Of course, if it's to be a lecture, nobody delivers one like Dr. Becky. Her enthusiasm is contagious.
Hi. Wow. That is absolutely fascinating. Love it. Love the dedication of so many individuals who dedicate themselves to the pursuit of this kind of knowledge. Thanks to ALL of yous. Please accept my deepest appreciation and respect. 💜💚
Thank you for pointing out things that I can see with my binoculars! I totally plan on buying telescopic binoculars. I want to see Jupiter, I hope I can see those things too
Is it possible M109 has the odd shape of two types of galaxies because of the collision of two or more galaxies possibly with each having vastly different ages and formation? I've viewed videos of simulations of two galaxies colliding but they were simulating considerably simplistic variations of galaxies. I realize even the task of those simulations must have been highly complex but the simulations did not take into consideration the variances of the the type of galaxies you mentioned.
Galaxy collisions tend to create unstructured elliptical blob galaxies, like the 3 on the left side of Edwin Hubble's classifications. Maybe, given enough time, they might redevelop some spirals (?) There are some pretty video sims of galaxy collisions on YT, made using the parallel processing compute abilities of graphics cards. I think I saw one simulating 6 million stars, not bad for a desktop PC :)
That young spiral galaxies have interesting structures and old elliptical galaxies are boring and featureless is actually a nice demonstrations of the second law of thermodynamics.
You are an anomaly unto yourself. NO ONE else has eyes that blue. Also no one I know points at a printout and says, "That one's a double star". Makes me a bit sad actually.
So awesome to see how hypothetical models computed directly can contribute to physics! Just imagine how many discoveries AI will help the current generation of researchers find 🤯
I love astronomy, I love DeepSkyVideos, but Dr. Smethurst's enthusiasm makes it even 10 times better.
Fake_Blood Thanks!🥳
I stick by it - barred galaxies are definitely my favourite 🤗
Likewise...but ring galaxies are also nice
@@vanhouten64 Put a ring on it No Face ;D
Your favourite - bar none? :D
Ah, that's probably just home town pride, since we're living in one.
LOVE your channel, Dr. Becky. Cheers, from Tennessee!
I thought the Penguin Galaxy was your favorite. o.O
Dr. Becky Smethurst’s enthusiasm for astronomy is so inspiring/endearing. She might be the most lovely astronomer alive today.
I absolutely LOVE Dr Becky. Her passion for the subject really seeps through
I’ve just come across this channel and seeing Dr Becky makes me SO happy. 😂

I could listen to Dr. Becky talk all day
I almost did...
Dr. Becky is my favorite!
🎉 yay!
Dr Becky is a great guest :D
That double star was awesome. I'm gonna look for it with my telecope soon as the sky clears. Thanks for the tip
Jon Watts you’re welcome! 🤗
I love the Messier catalog. Thanks for sharing!
Looking at and studying spectacular galaxies as part of your work. I'm envious.
The Ansae, my friend, is blowin in the wind
The Ansae is blowin in the wind
i see what you did there...
😂 I will never un-hear this
Thanks for having one of my favorite scientists! Dr. Becky !
Galaxies with bars, selling Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters of course.
I love the colours in this video

Hurray Becky!
LionidasL10 🥳
It looks like a Star Wars Tie Fighter.
OMG! IT DOES! I won't be able to unsee that now. LOL
And it’s a far away galaxy
Memories of studying astronomy a few years ago whilst watching this. My lecturer wasn’t as lovely as Becky though!
Love this channel!
So we've got the answer to the ansae then?
is it flat, like Earth?
Nice one!

Thanks Sally!
Amazing!!
Messier #111 and #112.... Becky's eyes.
Nail polish 💅 game on point.
🤗 I'm glad someone noticed!
Had no idea that Am's and Brit's had a different names for the Plow/Big Dipper.......
I think the center resembles a TIE Advanced x1 ;-)
I'm just here to like the video before watching.
cringe..
Now I want that Atlas.
"Ansae" is Latin for "handles" (like the handles on a Greek vase). One handle is an ansa.
Galaxy Bars, where astronomers & astrophysicists go to unwind.
An astronomer and an astrophysicist walk into a galaxy bar. One orders "let's have two ansae". The other replies "OK, for me two, too". Cheers.
Words can't express how disappointed I am that the UK calls Ursa Major 'The Plow'
Hard to bear, isn't it?
different cultural heritage from people who saw different things in the sky
the ursa is greek, while the plough/dipper is not
Its actually 'plough' like the farming tool.
So you could say we don't have a complete ansa yet....
I thought you were going to channel Spinal Tap (Stonehenge) at 3:46.
Thank you for pointing out things that I can see with my binoculars! I totally plan on buying telescopic binoculars. I want to see Jupiter, I hope I can see those things too

@@massimookissed1023 Thanks, this makes sense.
Very nice video! Interesting info and you can also tell you are using a MUCH BETTER camera than you used to (thank goodness!)
M109 looks just like the artists renditions of our own barred spiral galaxy, the Milky Way.
Anyway it could be somekind of lensing?
What are the velocity and the acceleration of the sun vs the centre of the Milky Way?
Our sun ≈ 200km/s.
Most of the other stars in the galaxy are doing that ±10%
They're all normal spirals. All these unusual structures can be explained by a combination of inclination and resolution...
What! Only red?
An Ansae is to a Galaxy, what wrinkles are to a human. Would that be a fair description?
Dang. Look at all that Dark mater.
The ansae talked about in pottery class isn't nearly exciting enough. I'm going to just pretend it's just short for ansible.
These peanut guys really made a name for themselves with that paper
Dr. Becky, your nails have grown 1mm since the last painting! :-)
Creeper alert!!
that makes a lightyear in a trillion years
Looks a lot like a Tie Fighter. This could be THE galaxy that is far far away!!!
Handley Machine 😂 love it!
1:24 pop up !
That young spiral galaxies have interesting structures and old elliptical galaxies are boring and featureless is actually a nice demonstrations of the second law of thermodynamics.
Dat microjitter tho. Love the new camera, but you could use some stability gear like a Gimbal. That subtle rocking is mildly nauseatng.
How is IC1101 still a plain orbital galaxy and not a spiral galaxy ?
hi, i see something orbiting Mars on my telescope. i can't find anything online what it could be. what is it?
1:05 looks like a batarang
Dr. Becky rulez
I've lost track, is the Milky way still a Bar Galaxy, or was it debunked, and we're still considered a Spiral.
they look like Vader's tie fighter head on
I know! I don't know why I'm so excited by that.
can someone tell me what galaxy is on the cover of the book?
Benjamin Stabell it’s the Sombrero Galaxy 👍 or M104
The Plough.
Ursa Major.
Love her videos, combination of brain and beauty, if I dare.
I didn't understand the explanation. But maybe I don't know enough about galaxies?
There's something absolutely absurd about calling an entire galaxy "a very fine example of the type."
That doesn’t look like a plough. Unless people in the uk call snow-shovels ploughs.
@@horrificpleasantry9474 , diapers are *_nappies_*, a _napkin_ is the cloth you use to keep food off your clothes while you eat. :)
Those look more like a tie-fighter than a steering wheel in s racecar.
It's Vader's fighter!
Well, we know our galaxy has bars. There is one just down the street from where I live.
It's a damn shame that book is almost $300.
Milky Way is a floppy bent Galaxy
Chen, Wang, Deng, de Grijs, Liu, Tian. - China
Shame that we cannot even tell if our galaxy is a bar or non-bar spiral type.
So an ansa walks into a bar...
new camera?
its a boldwyn bifurcation
I bought that book then usps LOST it...
Lots of galaxies flopping about.
Woohooi
Peanut? Try bow tie.
Look who’s here
Taking time out from persecuting heretics?
Central bulge? OwO
what's this?
Dr. Becky ,I'm single if you are, and I like M106 better. Lets talk about it.
They look like TIE Fighters to me, because I belong to a lost generation
You are an anomaly unto yourself. NO ONE else has eyes that blue. Also no one I know points at a printout and says, "That one's a double star". Makes me a bit sad actually.
Easy to get lost in those blue eyes and that accent.
So you're saying M109 is barred from joining the Elliptical group of galaxies? This is such political racism. :)
SOMEONES GOT A NEW LENS
"M104" through "M110" are fake...
