Unprecedented video analysis finds that distraction was a factor in nearly 6 out of 10 moderate-to-severe teen crashes, which is four times as many as official estimates based on police reports. Some of that footage is included in this video. (Video courtesy AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety)

When I was 13 my dad started taking me to a construction site where his friend let us drive the front loader. Dad told me I needed to be certified by this man on operating the front loader which was a lot of fun but I asked dad why I needed to learn how to drive a front loader and he said "you're not learning to drive a front loader, you're learning to drive a car on public roads but I'll be damned if I will let you loose on the same roads everyone else has to use until you have proven you can pilot heavy machinery safely. " Those lessons stayed with me my entire life and at 55 I still think of cars as heavy machinery and fully understand the gravity of using one on public roads.

I was coming on to say the exact same thing I cannot believe she actually looked back down at her phone while in the middle of an accident
Just yesterday I had a girl behind me who didn't take her eyes off her phone. Came to a stop light and she stopped inches from me. @@mattmurphy7030 Roughly the same thing happened to my Pop, except his cousin survived and was paralyzed from the neck down, and the driver was drunk rather than distracted by a cell phone (this was decades prior to cell phones).
Pop was also a combat vet who had done LRRP in Vietnam. The moment when I'm browsing random youtube videos and I see your name. "I know that guy!" Hah. Also, I feel that being a teenager is qualification enough for being "drunk".

Drugs are better consumed on a fully aged brain.
You can blame MADD for raising the age again too.
mentalfloss.com/article/19437/why-drinking-age-21
Helder Pinto You can also buy a rifle or shotgun by 18.
but in other countries you can do both at a younger age..such as…16-18
Teenagers: “It’s not my fault, I thought my car has an automatic braking system….”
The last girl even checks after nearly driving off the road to see if she had a reply or her message sent🤣😂
Not serious injuries = Don't learn nothing
Don't learn nothing = Learn something
Learn to not say double negatives because it can confuse people.
***** That's a cool idea, is this really happening?
vicesat A kid died while I was in highschool racing his friends down a country road. Apparently his friends still race down that road. They don't learn either way...
Aaron Treno Thank you. It's one of the most annoying things do; especially when they're talking.
What is AAA?
This makes me want to drive a monster truck, imagine having an amazing life only to get taken out by some moron teenager staring at their phone.
Comment of the year.
I'm buying a monster truck.
I believe you meant to say "by any ignorant and selfish moron staring at their phone."
Yep good idea, they deserve the pain of the consequence not us.
Yes, but teens are the most prone to do shit like that.
I've seen middle aged people drive 15 under speed limit and create traffic because they want to stare at their phones while driving.
This video spiked my anxiety! ugh...
The fact this was a whole decade ago and its gotten even worse to this day is insane
“I only looked down a second officer.” - The guy who drifted across an entire road and into a mailbox, probably.
More like "Sorry dad a damn deer done ran in front of me and crashed me, nothing I could do!"
roughly 100ft per second at 65mph. a lot can happen in 100 feet.
i swear it cause some of them get bored by just look at the road
Exactly right but it was the guy wasn't on the Zebra crossing before I started texting..
It's funny how everyone here is using their phones while on curvy roads...
My father-in-law is a bit of a gawker when he drives which can be rather maddening. However, what’s most upsetting is that there will be an oncoming car or we’ll be just before a curve and he’ll start gawking THEN rather than, oh, I dunno, AFTER the car passes or during a straightaway. 🤦🏼♂️
Yeah, some of them probably didn't except the road to curve which means there were on a very long straight but others took out their phone right in the middle of a curve ,lol WTF?
I know! I'm a very experienced driver and I've got both hands on the wheel on roads like this, ESPECIALLY in the dark!
@Mike Studmuffin There's bigger issues you should be worrying about son.
Shouldn't be looking at a phone while driving at all. Straight road or curvy. You can still veer off on a straight road.
I’m 16 and just went on the road for the first time, I was shaking and was so nervous but I did great, I don’t get how teens can even be comfy doing this
Dude the one girl was already across the other lane of traffic and in the grass before she knew what happened. That is terrifying.
Some of them looked down for so long it's like they forgot they were driving.
Years ago ('94) I was working for Motorola, and when the first smaller cellphones started coming out on the market, I said that there's not a lot of good that's going to come out of it, everyone started to laugh at me: "You're crazy!! It's a great thing!! Nothing's going to happen!!"
See the video?
Guess the bottom of the totem pole doesn't know anything, huh?
Edit: The reason I knew was because I couldn't afford a phone at the time, so I took notice on the way everyone else in the office was distracted when they were on their devices.
Texting
@@user-kn8xi3to6y & that was the Neanderthal cellphone compared to all the colorful screens, apps & games we have now!!
Like many young people I played pokemon go, lost control few times, in 1 case I hit the curb nearly missing a woman walking her dog, in another case got pulled over by a cop for crossing into the opposite lane (told him I had a long day @ work, he did not notice I was using the phone)!!... after that I deleted the pogo account, wasn't easy doing that (being so addicted), but today I'm glad I did so, God knows what could have happened if I had continued playing!!
That's inexcusable. If I ever caught any of my kids driving like that, they'd lose their keys and phone for a while.
Did you really just copy the most liked comment on this video and repost it? How freaking ghey.
The looks on their faces when faced with reality - priceless.
Unfortunately I get the feeling it'll happen again in their life.
"Wait so like, uhm... I can get punished, for like, uhm not paying attention?... Ughhh this is soooo dumb"

Equally funny and scary
Why are you all acting like all teens are spoiled brats, it’s normal when you’re a teen you’re less responsible don’t act all cool like you don’t make mistakes
Good to see nobody was hurt and hopefully learned a hard lesson!
These dash cam cameras are better than bank security cameras
Moral of the story, don't overcorrect yourself like a madman when you've slightly moved over further than you thought. Or just pay attention. Idk
i mean, most of them were off the pavement before they even realized >_
I think the moral of the story is that some people should NOT be allowed to drive.
Or don't freak out and jerk your steering wheel.
@@Tiyratania bro
Moral of the story is keep your eyes on the road. I don't ever hear about DWIs anymore. It's always so and so crossed the center line.
I’ll never forget talking to this mother who was talking about her daughter getting her license and she was literally BRAGGING how good her daughter was at texting and driving.
With any luck, when the daughter has her inevitable car crash her mother will be in the car and she'll win them both darwin awards.
only hands free allowed in vehicles in Canada.
@@paddington1670 Surely that's in all countries
May someday she'll say the same words at her daughter's funeral.
My ex always bragged about steering with his knees while driving and having a ton of weed in his car. Heard this caused his crash a few moths ago and from what I know the weed was found as well 😂
Of course when you ask each one of them what caused the accident, they’ll say “I don’t know what happened”
this is crazy how people dont pay attention on the road

being punished for using your phones when driving is one of the driving laws I fully agree with
this made me nostalgic for some reason
The sheer length of time they had their eyes off the road was insane...
Have you seen movies where the character who's driving turns his head towards the passenger to talk and completely forgets about the road ahead? These kids, and adults, think they can do the same and nothing is going to happen.
if y'all gonna text and drive at least keep your peripheral vision on the road, just to make sure you stay in your lane and don't run into nobody.
ESPECIALLY the girl at 1:12!!!!!!😳🤯 like 6 straight seconds who in their right mind thinks you can do that without consequences!!!
@@itsfrickinmik957 my thoughts exactly. It was possibly more than 6 seconds cos when the video starts her eyes are already glued to her phone
They have no clue how fast 60 actually is
Two things bother me:
1: The length of time they stare at their phones. Like if they completely forgot they are operating a vehicle.
2: The fact they panic suerve the car when they look back, completely and immediately loosing all control.
It bothers me that they use their phone behind the wheel PERIOD.
*swerve
*losing
Yeah, about half of these crashes were avoidable if they just hadn't panic swerved
@@alexlyster3459 about all of these crashes were avoidable if they paid attention to their driving
As a teen who wants to drive, I am terrified of this because I feel like I could be like these people who don’t pay attention to their surroundings
The fact this video is 9 years old says something
Nearly 100% of them panicked immediately which resulted in them losing control. rip
Yea, they all over corrected and then lost control… smooth is fast
Some weren't even that bad, they just freaked and overcorrected
Actually, a large percentage seamed unphased by the disaster that was unfolding, as if they were playing Mariocart and were unaware that it would cost them a few grand to fix it.
I have fat nuts
I bet these are all teens from Alabama 🤣 jk love your stuff Cam
Thanks to kids like this our insurance is through the roof. Brilliant.
key word ( kids ) that the issue allowing kids to drive. The rational part of a teen’s brain isn’t fully developed and won’t be until age 25 or so.
In fact, recent research has found that adult and teen brains work differently. Adults think with the prefrontal cortex, the brain’s rational part. This is the part of the brain that responds to situations with good judgment and an awareness of long-term consequences. Teens process information with the amygdala. This is the emotional part.
@@stevekenilworth While I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying, I think allowing teens to drive is sort of a necessary evil.
Holden what?
If you think kids are the only ones driving like this, you are mistaken! I had to tell a friend to put her phone away while driving! She is in her 60's!
I see adults more often using their phones while driving!
teen: *sees car 1 inch off of the road*
also teen: *(overreacts) (swerves) (spins out) (crashes)*
The take their eyes off the road for like 15 seconds and all confused that they're in a completely different spot when they looked back up. Just wow.
If I see on the dashcam footage that my kid is using their phone, I’m selling their car. What’s more, they will be there to watch the keys and paperwork get handed over. They’re well aware of this. I don’t want them killing themselves or anyone else.
Same, like wth on your phone is more important than keeping your eyes on the god damn road
... there is one sentence I remember from driving school: "When you drive a car you have ONE job - driving your car. There is nothing else that matters. You drive the damn CAR!"... and that was before mobile phones were invented.

Also I sometimes seeing stupid riders like to do something stupid on the road like wheelies and against the speed limit on the busy road this type of rider bring shame to us as a rider we always get attacked by everyone and saying a rider are stupid and the same because of this ignorance everyone got attacked even drivers and riders. But I'm not saying all rider and car or truck driver are stupid but some of them not all. So stay safe everyone no matter you on Motorcycle, Car or truck just stay safe
