- It is 40 years since weather symbols were introduced to BBC forecasts. They were designed to give viewers a clearer understanding of what weather was on the way. Over the years the style and technology of forecasting has changed considerably. BBC Weather's John Hammond has been looking at the archives.

I started infant school in 1975 when the magnetic symbols came out and was just five. The later forecasts I remember and especially computer graphics (by then I was fifteen!). Takes me right back!
BBC forecasts: 40 years since weather symbols introduced - BBC News 2334pm 10.7.22 i think they should revert to magnetic symbols which they haphazardly used to bang into the maps... i started infant school in 1976.... so i doubt the presentation style had altered much by then... computer graphics leave me cold as does much of the c.g.i kultur. the techno fascists are very defensive and aggressive in reference to their own techno-cratic natures and cult - computer generated infotainment is almost a cult, a fetish.... they protect their simulation with sadistic glee, i feel... p.s anyhow; it's been v v v very warm today - with reference to my own sense of self. others think it too warm others not warm enough. i can handle 20 degrees heat but after that i'm uncomfortable. i need booze also. as for how they inform me it's warm - well no amount of map banging or computer generated b.s is gonna be needed to tell me something i already know... how long this summer lasts - well, let's face it, i can handle another 4 weeks of this.... for sure.

The guy in the black and white film was Bert Foord-a real weatherman , not just a "weather presenter" -he was principal meteorologist for RAF Strike Command
Most BBC presenters are meteorologists as well even today.

Ive just come back from the future- weathers about the same
I remember Fish with those symbols falling off the start, long time ago, it was pretty direr in the early 1960’s with it’s isobars, this films got the the late Ian McCaskill 1938 - 2016 VIP Ian.
Some great characters there, it makes our fascination with the weather more interesting because of these presenters.
In 1975, the weather icons included rain with droplets, thunderstorms with lightning bolt, snow with snowflakes
That era will always be remembered for that forcaste gaff, by Michael Fish, Who assured a lady who had phoned in ,worried about talk of a Huricane coming our way, that there was NOTHING to worry about. WE were, on the receiving end of one of this countrys most destructive storms in history.
I like how technology has improved in the course of more then 40 years

I can remember the magnetic symbols very well even though I was only 6 when they replaced them.
Oh, those were the days. When Brits could make the sun shine forever on a drawing board, hoping that the sun would never set on the British Empire. Alas, as heaven would have it, it all came to an end all too abruptly. Of atmospherics and empires.

They are not used in the tv forecast anymore but derivatives are used on the bbc weather app
The early computerised version used the same design of symbols from 1985 until 2005 when the first 3D/video graphics appeared
The 1970s maps were quite complicated to try and understand but todays computerised forecasts are a far cry from those days

So what do the weird flag lines mean? I know they're something to do with wind....
The curved lines with triangles or semicircles are fronts. Triangles and cold fronts, semicircles are warm fronts. You can still see them on weather maps, but they don't explain them, they have to dumb down and dramatise.

Actually the forecast is much more accurate and more reliable nowadays plus its also more understandable

Weather is getting more severe due to the climate WARMING UP that's why the UK gets weather warnings during severe weather

I then asked you if you expect the BBC to make a youtube video about very single incident that happens, right when it happens, even with minimal information??... If you think so then you have lost touch with reality. Im sure your wonder story will be covered on BBC's "CZcams channel" sometime soon. But for future reference, since you're kind of slow, go to media corporations websites to see more frequent stories.
