    😄Hello Justin! I just wanted to say thank you for posting this video🙏. This video has helped me solidify my choice on which path I’m going to take… and starting this September, I’ll be going back to finish my classes for PTA program.
    I really wanted to go to school for DPT… but sadly, I also had to be realistic about my financial goals; I barely made enough money to even pay off the undergraduate studies let alone the DPT classes (I started working as a PT Aide for less than a year before being laid off due to Covid-19 restrictions), plus $60k - $100k tuition is WAAAAY out of my financial budget even with financial and scholarships, so I felt it was best to just go a PTA program.

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  Před 2 lety +6

      Hey Neko. I’m so glad this video was helpful to you in confirming that you want to be a PTA. it’s for sure a hard decision to make and it really sucks that tuition is one of the heaviest factors that sways people away from dpt. It’s like you have so much desire to pursue it, but you just can’t convince yourself to dish out that much money right? Well I’m glad you chose PTA. financially it’s THE smart choice.

    • @user-hn9qg5qm3o
      @user-hn9qg5qm3o Před měsícem +1

      I’m a PTA and although it’s financially the smart choice, if you’re still loving your job after about 5 years as a PTA then I’d be surprised. It’s usually 15-20 patients to treat daily on top of getting all documentation typed up and complete while you’re simultaneously treating the patient often 2 patients at the same time (talk about massive multitasking and brain scatter!). It leads to quick burnout due to the high volume of patients you must treat daily, not to mention it’s getting somewhat harder and harder to find PTA jobs in orthopedic outpatient clinics. If you don’t find one then the only other option is typically either home health (fair mix of nasty homes in some high crime areas and sometimes scary big dogs) or SNF. SNF is mostly elderly population that can sometimes be quite difficult to participate in therapy, and also difficult meeting productivity around the patients’ doctor appointments and eating/bathroom trips. I feel so sorry for new grad PTAs entering the field now especially in SNFs because it is very mentally and physically draining. Lastly, many times in a SNF you will have some weeks where caseload drops and you only get to work 20-30 hours. This will hurt your paycheck unfortunately since they won’t allow you to stay on the clock and help other therapists etc.

But, if you were working with VA prior to 2005 (exact yr may be incorrect) all you had to do was be a PT with a bachelors and the VA grandfathered you in... So, now I work with DPT with 7yrs and PT's with only 4! Crazy huh? They were not required to go back to school.. Take care and good luck on whatever choice you have.

    Hey, thanks for the video, please post more details about the bridge program.
    Just a little note, PTA’s title is Physical TherapIST assistant, you may not trust to give the patient to aid, but you can definitely trust a PTA about anything related to a patient care, they are Board certified licensed therapy professionals, and the PTA school is super hard, it’s crazy. You’re right, they can’t change the poc, but they can choose the appropriate treatment for patients. Let’s say if the goal is to increase LE strength, PTA can get to decide by which exercises and how to increase, so you shouldn’t give like a flow sheet of ther ex and expect to be done only that, unless patient has contraindications. So PTA’s also have a bit space to decide the treatment portion.(little hint here, no PTA likes too specific therapists, lol) I wish there would be more bridge programs from PTA to DPT, but oh man, the tuition kills!
    Waiting for the bridge program videos.
    Thank you!

      Good point. I’m an SPTA in my first clinical rotation. They base all their exercises off a protocol the PT made. They are very specific of what exercises to do so it seems like it’s a routine work kinda thing. It feels very limited on what a PTA can do since you can’t decide the appropriate treatment. Everything is the same exercise and can’t really do STM since only one specific PT does it. Boring just to think. Hope next rotations will be better

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  Před 3 lety

      @@panda6194 that is unfortunate. I from what it seems like, i think it really depends on your clinic and how much freedom they give PTAs. at my clinic, pta are free to give exercises that are within the plan of care as long as it is appropriate for the patient and are also able to perform manual therapy like STM and Graston. I’m sure you rotation will get better, and if not your next one will!!

Sports and fitness are my passion, but I also like economics/finances and maybe engineering as I love to be creative. Still not sure and I literally just started looking for colleges/career paths. I also recently became a Christian so maybe that could influence my career path but I’m not sure yet. Also thinking about military as well but I feel like it would almost be a waste since I’ve tried so hard in school to get good grades, and doing military or community college would make my hard work in hs seem kind of pointless haha, but I still see the benefits of the two. My dream right now is to one day train top athletes and fighters, and then eventually to open up my own gym and clients. I have commitment issues and seem to have new hobbies and passions every year it seems like, so I’ve been really stressed out thinking about these major life decisions. Anyways, thanks for the video you saved me hours of research and I’m one step closer now to figuring out what I want to do. This was a really helpful video! I applied for sports med for next year at a local technical school, because high school seniors are allowed to take that class. I am a junior right now! Part of what they cover in that class is related to physical therapy, and they have a program for adult students with a local community college where you take your prerequisites at the college and then at the technical school, you can either go to the PTA program or OTA program. My idea is that if I decide later on that I want to because a DPT, then I will apply for a bridge program. I am aware that they are pretty competitive, but its still an option I will keep in mind. What is the main difference between PT and OT? Just FYI, even though the PTA program is only an associates and technically it takes only 2 years to complete the program. In my program, it required 2 years worth of prerequisites, so it was minimum 4 years worth of schooling. Which I guess is why the APTA wanted to make it a bachelors degree. So that’s something to consider. Still comes our way cheaper though.
    Many of my PTA classmates as well as myself already had their bachelors which covered the prerequisites.
    I decided to go for my DPT after 2 years as a PTA. I went to a very competitive PTA program with a high reputation, and having done both PTA and DPT programs, I had already learned 2/3 of the material, so there were many courses that were a breeze.
    Regarding Salary, a PTA roughly makes 2/3 of what a PTA makes. PT's at my current clinic make $45/hour while PTA's make $30/hour. But interestingly my first job out of PT school I made $35/hour in outpatient.
    Also a home health PTA can make the same as an outpatient PT because home health pays more. So technically I was making more as a home health PTA ($45/hour) in 2018 than my first job as an outpatient PT ($35/hour) in 2022.

I did not do a bridge program, I did an entire 3 year DPT program and graduated May 2022, tuition alone was about $90K total, but everyone takes the full federal loan in order to pay for living expenses since you can't work, so my full loan was $124K. I did not work during PT school because it was impossible as that was more than a full time job. I did not keep my PTA license either, because I didn't plan to work during winter break or spring break. so I let my PTA license expire.

      @@tonylovelessjr6742 if you want my full honest opinion, this is something that is taboo to say, but I would only recommend DPT program to someone who has the financial assistance to pay for school from family. If not I would recommend you go to PA school or consider being a an RN. I can't recommend anyone going to PT school and taking out a loan to do so. Salary to Debt ratio is way too low to be paying $1300/month on student loans and also having a car payment or mortgage to pay. Registered Nurses make the same or more as PT's and have opportunities to make more money. Insurance reimbursement for our services will not increase so there is a glass ceiling in this profession. I was very fortunate that my parents paid for the majority of my tuition. I love what I do, and yes I would do it all over again because I had the means to do so without the debt. It's just not very smart to graduate from school with $124K of debt making $75K, so your net monthly income is $4k, but 1/3 of your paycheck goes to student loans x 10 years and your income only increases to $95K in that 10 year period.

So once you do transfer you will be right in the core classes spending less than two years on a B.S exercise science, kinesiology, etc. I’m trying to go to school for as cheap as possible and make sure there isn’t any classes at the B.S level that I could have taken at the A.S level. I’m not saying becoming a PTA is not a good path to DPT. Everyone has different route depending on their situation. But if I could have an IDEAL situation.. I would do it like you. Work hard for 2 years at a community college and get a AS in PTA. During that time, you’ll be fulfilling some prerequisites for DPT school and some GE for your bachelors. Then get your PTA and work to gain experience and money while you finish up your bachelors and the rest of your prerequisites. Then go into DPT. If I had an ideal route... that’s the route I would do. LIKE YOURE DOING!!! But not everyone is willing to do that. You save about a year or so if you go straight to bachelors and get a DPT, but you miss out on experience in the field that you can use to refer to when you’re in dpt school

    Is it possible to become a PTA (as plan B) after earning a bachelor's degree in kinesiology if you take the 2-year PTA program and the license exam?

    • @drjustinleedpt
      @drjustinleedpt  Před 3 lety +3

      It is absolutely possible to do so! However, if you already got a bachelors, I would recommend going to DPT since you’re pretty much half way there. It’s a lot to take all the requirements but you already worked hard for a bachelors. However... if you’re not down for all the extra stuff, PTA is a great option. You just have to fulfill what you mentioned: 2 year PTA program and license exam

    PTA is way better. You get to actually treat the patient. PT does a lot more paperwork and they are severely underpaid for how much schooling is required
