It is burned in marketing. Ads, rallies, etc. You would think in a sane world that candidates could stand on their own merits and beliefs, but the state of our politics is now steeped in partisanship all the way down. Vote blue or vote red, nothing else matters.
The campaign. Hundred if not thousand of people. Every state has its own office. You have door knockers, press people, secretaries, advertisers. Every state gets its own targeted advertising campaign. Radio, TV, print, billboards.
It’s not technically a requirement. Anyone can run if they get the support. But in order to win, you need this massive machine that has targeted strategies for every state.
Look at Trump. Day after day after day he is flying his entire team to rallies. They have to rent the arena. Security. Food. All of the costs of hosting 50k-100k people in a venue. And they don’t charge for tickets to make a profit. Tickets are cheap, or even free. Think about how much that costs to do month after month.
It does suck. But it’s just the way it is. You need to have your face everywhere, and need to convince enough people that you are the better choice.
You become a product that consumers must choose. And just like any product, you have advertising budget.
Worst is when the president or other folks running come out and just start bragging about it as they are doing good, or that they will win based purely on millions raised.
The 2010 Citizens United Vs the Federal Election Commission US Supreme Court ruling gave inordinate power to corporations to donate money to (buy) candidates. That's The American Way in a nutshell.

Less the point of no return is practically in 6 weeks when the DNC happens. After that the candidate becomes official. And there even seems to be attempts to make Biden official earlier somehow by virtual meeting or other trickery to somehow lock Biden in and not give voters or other democrats a chance to change it.

It's odd to call them "donors"; that seems kind of benevolent. They are rentiers. They may in fact be donating millions to politicians, but that isn't their defining characteristic. For them, the donations are pocket change. They are not merely rich people, they are the super-rich,. They make money from the mere fact of already having money. The money they "donate" isn't some non-self-interested act of altruism. It is an investment in having influence.
