VTOL VR - Strike on Naval Test Lake - The hardest mission I finally beat

  • I can't understate how many times I attempted this mission but we're here, I did it. Multiple recordings but this is the first (and only) time I beat the third mission of the VTOL VR stock F/A 26B campaign. This mission is fun and difficult in a way I really enjoy and it pushed me to be better at the game and learn about some real-world concepts that the game joyfully employs.
    To get it out of the way, I decided to go with a two camera view to enjoy some cinematic flair, but this means that the core view is that of my left eye, so you get to see part of the helmet this game uses whenever it is in first person view. I hope it is not too distracting, but it was a compromise I'm okay with and I hope it is easy enough to ignore.

    VTOL VR is published and developed by Boundless Dynamics, LLC. The game sports a fully immersive VR experience with pure virtual controls and and excellent balance between sim and arcade, leaning more towards the sim side of things. It is a spectacular game with plenty of community content to keep the game fresh and an awesome multiplayer that allows any two people to say "You can be my wingman anytime" "Bull****, you can be mine"

    This was recorded using OBS Studio, edited with Kdenlive and Gimp- all of which are open source and free to use.

    Everyone remember that you can save your progress at any point in the mission that way you don’t have to restart the entire mission every time unless you end the game

    Just btw, if you're constantly getting the stall warning like you did at 4:10 it means you're pulling too hard, you're actually losing turn performance this way cuz you generate less lift than your maximum and you're also generating more drag which means you're losing a lot of energy (which makes the turning performance even worse).
    Great video btw! :D

    Great video, I love the editing style. Definitely deserves more views. There are a few things you can do to make future missions easier;
    1. Set your heaters to head track so you can fire them off bore
    2. Identify the missile before defending; chaff only works in the beam and flares are best used with low throttle. Using CMS without doing either of these is a waste.
    3. Fire from outside the DLZ. The aircraft in VTOL can easily outrange sams and other threats.
    4. Use flaps 1 in the dogfight.
    5. You can quick save in single player.
    6. LIV FPS can stabilise the FPV for you. I would also recommend trying out Chase cam-TGT in some of your shots; it looks really good imo.
    Keep up the great work!

    • @CJSLFindaer
      @CJSLFindaer  Před rokem +3

      Thank you! Most of these I learned by now but not at the point I got through this recording. On 6 I'm going to look into that, and I love Chase cam TGT but I have to choose one mode to go with and ended with the one you see, which at times has some good shots.
      5. warms my heart because I saved quite a few times but my editing masked it enough to get your comment :D This particular recording I didn't need to reload a save, but as you saw, most of the time I was doing so.

    i finally beat it by going dogfight mode, killing all enemy aircraft. The bombers have cruise missiles so they're pretty much firing at the boats from a safe range. The piece I was missing was what you showed in the video, calling your wingmen to stay with the bomber group until closer to the targets so you don't split your forces, and also taking out the undefended SAM site on the peninsula. Great video man. Tried this mission for 2 days! Essentially the AI "won the day" in terms of bombing the targets, but I couldn't afford 10 cruise missiles like they had! xD

    Awesome video with great commentary. this mission has been difficult for me but I took some good notes and look forward to playing. The video is NOT TO MUCH!! Please expalin to two camera perspective in VTOL

    • @CJSLFindaer
      @CJSLFindaer  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! For the two camera perspectives there are a few things to make that work.
      First of all, I have a dual monitor setup and I changed the resolution for both to standard 1920x1080, then I set the recording canvas with OBS to be 3840x1080 so that it records the entirety of both monitors in one extra wide video. Within the main menu of VTOL there is an option to show the s-cam on the monitor that I turned on. The s-cam is set in the MFD of the aircraft and there are a few different views you can choose. Then there is an option in Steam VR to display what is on the headset, which I set to left eye viewer (hence why the helmet is visible on the edges), that I set to fullscreen on my second monitor. So now I'm recording both my VR view and the s-cam view on the same video track side by side. The last step then is to put two tracks in my video editor with one cropping the left side and the other cropping the right side and picking which of the two tracks I want to use in my final render.
      It took a bit of experimenting but I'm pretty happy with the end result. Good luck the next time you fly this mission!

      @@CJSLFindaer Thank for the detailed answer! your video production is very well done and I appreciate the time it took to put it together. VTOL is a great game and it led me to DCS - bought all the hardware etc but it has a steep learning curve. I can fly the A10c, land, takeoff and manage a few weapons. Vtol has far more instant gratification. I will be retrying the naval base mission after taking some notes from you. Thanks Again for taking the time to produce and post. Patrick

  • @roughinitoutdoors1

    I didnt exactly have these same issues but I noticed many of the missions will have a little variance each time. the most important thing for each of these missions is having the right loadout for the specific aspect of the mission you are tasked with. In this case you will want to max out on medium range anti radar AGMs and the rest for airs-t a-a missiles and maybe either pack some laser guided bombs or a-g missiles and aim 120s. lastly i find it a good idea to practice with the f-26 on the 2v2 mission (actually 2v6) to get good at missile avoidance. The best tactic for avoiding missiles is to equip airs-t and set them to head track mode and lock up incoming missile threats with them. as far as anti radar, I find that if you wait to release the missile in the correct time of the "engagement zone", they are harder for AA to shoot dawn (because they are faster and have the most potential energy to reach the target in full effectiveness. Get proficient in practice to understand your RWR and ARAD!!! Once you launce a anti radar AGM in the "engagement zone", turn hard to avoid getting in range of the SAMs missiles but dont turn too far as to lose radar lock on the target. Once you hear the que "pitbull" turn out of radar lock (your missile has the target locked on its own). once you do this for about 4 of the SAM sites, you can then focus your remaining a-a missiles on the drones which are the easiest planes to take out (the mission will be over by this point).

      It's these types of things that are available to learn that makes me glad VTOL VR went the sim-lite way that it did. Some of this stuff I've learned since I did this mission, and some I'm still trying to get the hang of, but the game allows for a total noob to fly a plane and still have a good time.

    now the real hardest mission is operation 2359 for the EF-24G because all your npcs are just missile fodder while when i beat this mission my last wingman hit worlds most elegant bruiser and won while i was trying to configure my loadout with like $10k

    • @CJSLFindaer
      @CJSLFindaer  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! It was a variety of stuff for sure. AIM-120s and AIRS-Ts for short and medium range air to air, GBU-12 (laser guided) in case any of the ships were moving (I was not sure if the drone carrier would move), GBU-39 (GPS guided) to hit some of the parked ships, AGM-65s mostly to take out radars but also to help take out some of the ships, and a couple of AGM-88 anti-radiation to take out the lone SAM site and any other vulnerable radars. When I first started I was using external tanks for additional fuel as I did run into fuel issues without anything but decided conformal fuel tanks allowed me to carry more armament while still giving me enough gas to get home.

    The DLZ is a lie, you can fire from well outside of it. When I did this mission the first time, I just fired off a bunch of ARMs and followed around the friendlies. I didn't have a single missile fired upon my because that took out all the radars. I then proceeded to have a mid air collision with a drone :/
