  • Actor Rajkummar Rao has worked his way up by shinning in smaller, indie projects like Shahid, Newton and Trapped. Filmmaker Farah Khan makes big commercial films like Om Shanti Om and Main Hoon Na with the country's biggest star Shah Rukh Khan. In our second episode of Tape Cast (presented by Grey Goose) we bring together these successful artistes to discuss their wildly different journeys, choices and opinions on filmmaking. We also get a sense of what a Farah Khan film starring Rajkummar Rao would look like.

      Actually Rajkummar Rao is wrong, Robert Downey Jr didn't play an African American, he played a narcissistic white actor who plays a Black character in the film *within* the film. Tropic Thunder actually makes fun of the fact that a white person is playing a person of color. Raj is a great artist and I have great respect for him but he's completely off the mark here.

    When Farah Khan says, "So much for feminism" she does not realize that feminism does not comply actresses to say yes to a script or agree with each other even if they don't. If two people don't want to act together it should be understood that they won't. Why not speak about the big Khans too, who don't agree to be on the same screen? Just because you know one big word you don't just throw it anywhere. Feminism allows men and women to love, respect and accept each other while at the same time it allows one to make their own choices. Her ignorance hurts me physically knowing that there are so many others in that industry with that kind of power and mindset. Professionals like Rajkumar, Kangna, Vidya, Irfaan, Kalki, Kashyap, Hirani, Konkana, Shoojit Sircar, and of course some more if not too many, give me hope that the Hindi Film Industry can change for better. I pray that they succeed! I don't think people like Farah realize the kind of impact and outreach "Bollywood" has globally. The movies don't just go to places to make them the crores. Movies are an immensely powerful tool and that's wherein the power should be!

Do you know his uncle Karan Kapoor? Of course you don't. The world didn't accept him. Nepotism can get you your foot in the door, but in the end, it is about talent. Of course, in Udit Chopra's case, he didn't just get his foot in the door, he broke down the door, entered the house, and took a nap in the bedroom, but the world still isn't accepting him. Nepotism is bad, but there are likely many shitty actors blaming nepotism for their problems.

    Tell Farah Khan, if she doesn't know this that doctor's kids go to medical school(nothing less than 7-8 years of rigorous academics) to get a doctor's degree. Influence se medical schools mein admission nahi milta! Also, ask her just how many out of the star kids that have been launched actually have a degree in film/acting. Probably this is the only interview where the director's not as smart as she claims and the actor's rooted. Good going Tapecast. Can't wait for Kalki and Anurag's interview.

    • @Tiafulable1
      @Tiafulable1 Před 6 lety +6

      Okay there's so much to contest here. Medicine- if you don't know someone connected but have gone to college and got top marks you will probably be able to be a doctor- of course. But if you do have connections and also get really good marks, you'll be able to become a doctor much faster and a little more seamlessly (think internships, easier admission, hospital placements and favouritism in the hospital due to your chacha being the head of cardiology). You also forget the advantage of being brought up in a family where the main point of conversation is medicine- big Latin words become much more part of normal vocabulary- seeing your parents deal with heavy stress means that lifestyle becomes the norm for you and when you come to live it, it's easier. You can't discount how nepotism is rife in any industry. In Bollywood the disadvantages of nepotism are much higher than other industries. The spectrum goes right from your first Friday- the chances of flopping and the entire family being shamed publicly for it all the way to when this nepotism debate surfaces and Bollywood has the nastiest light shone on them because of the jealousy rife in society. Because you can't be picky about which doctors you get treated by but you can abuse these actors on social media and ruin their lives and careers because of half baked opinions. Life is great for actors who have made it but parts of it must be really shite too

    • @nidhie.01
      @nidhie.01 Před 6 lety +5

      I know sir, my bad. I should have said "Influence se medical schools mein SABKO admission nahi milta!" I should have also added "Aur jin undeserving logon ko milta hai, bhagwaan bachaye unse patients ko."

    • @Tiafulable1
      @Tiafulable1 Před 6 lety

      Your Response - Your optimism is dangerous. Here are a few scenarios you may have not considered: What if you don’t work hard because you know your connections will get you in anyway? What if you get into school just because you can afford to but drop out midway because you cannot cope with the stress? This has happened in the past. A sheer waste of a seat that could have gone to someone truly deserving. The problem with clout is it opens doors for the underserving too. It is neither healthy nor should be encouraged. And the people who think it is ok to take this route should atleast be courteous enough to acknowledge the fact that they did not work for it!
      My response- This is why I was very particular about the connected medic also getting good marks. I’m comparing 2 good doctors, the only variable is that one is from a medical family and connected while the other isn’t. In a nutshell, my argument isn’t about how there should be more nepotism in the world. I feel that people who are not good at their job should not be doing that job. I agree that people like Jacky Bhagnani, Harman Baweja, Bobby Deol etc etc should NOT be superstars because they are not deserving. But the flip side of that argument is that fantastic actors like Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt, Shahid Kapur, Kareena Kapoor should not be entirely shunned just because their parents did the same job. If you are good at your job, that’s it, you are good. The reality is people like Bobby etc are rejected by the audiences, yes they get the initial advantage of a break but the audience isn’t stupid- producers stop banking on them and they can only be supported by their own banners- eventually making their families lose money too when the films flop. Just because you know their name does not mean they are successful. In fact, the fact that you even know their name makes it impossible for them to find an alternative career.
      Your response- Agreed but the kids still have to go to school to be officially recognized as doctors and start their practice. I don’t see any mandatory milestones set for film kids that determine whether they are eligible to act in movies or not. Plus film kids necessarily do not go through the same struggles that their parents have gone through. In fact, if social media is anything to go by, they are living pretty extravagant lives without actually doing much to earn it.
      My response- this is when the doctor comparison gets a little murky. If a film actor was directly responsible for ensuring someone is alive or dead, then yes they too would have to get an education. But this is not their responsibility- their responsibility is to entertain. This is more of a natural talent- it can’t be learnt. The only learning needed is how lighting works, how mood is set etc. That’s why so many of them become ADs. A lot of them also go to study at various acting schools. Many have to go into months of physical training to look the part. You can’t claim that they wake up one day and say “Papa mujhe actor banna hai” and walk onto the set that same day. A lot of thought and prep goes into it. I won’t go into the social media bit because that is a tool specifically designed to show off only the good parts of your life. The fact that they don’t write a post about the negatives doesn’t mean those don’t exist. When they do talk about the negative side they get numerous trolls calling them out saying ‘be happy for what you have’. So you can’t win can you.
      Response - Disadvantages of nepotism better be higher in the film industry given the actor’s fees is sky-rocketing too. I have zero sympathy for actors who rant about the public being harsh. Mind you I am not rooting for trolls paid to hound celebs, but celebrities feeling shocked about public criticizing them is amusing to me. They should not expect millions of fans following them on social media to only express appreciation. They should be geared to face criticism, however harsh it maybe.
      My response- Agreed. They do have to deal with a lot and so they do bear it. If they made a big deal about each mean message they get, that’s all they’d be talking about. It’s true, dealing with it is on them. But the argument that because parts of their life are good, we as an audience have a responsibility to add the bad and balance it out is ridiculous. We have no idea about the intricacies of their lives. My perception of you from your photo and this conversation is that you are a pretty looking lady, seem educated, are wealthy enough to own some form of media to watch this video and are clearly fortunate enough to be fed and watered. Everything I know about you is positive, you live a great life. Does that mean you now deserve some hatred? I know we’re comparing millions of twitter followers to fundamental wants and needs but the crux of my point is- Do we have to add negativity just because we see someone is happy?
      Response - Well, life for undeserving people who made it into the industry without trying too hard and just because they were born into film families should be shit. And that people on social media are openly expressing this is a fantastic thing.
      My response- Almost totally agree here too. But can you name 3 people who are really successful in Bollywood but are completely talentless from a famous family? I also totally agree that people’s freedom of speech is fantastic. But when this privilege is used to exclusively spew hate, I’m not a fan of those select people.

    Over nepotism, both of them are trying so hard to not fight on camera but have such opposite views!!
    Farah's point about an actor's son being an actor being equal to a doctor's son being a doctor is so pathetic.. the doctor doesn't set the paper for the PMT entrance, the doctor can't ensure another more talented kid doesn't get the seat..
    The whole grouse with nepotism is that it gives the kid a launch pad. Look at Athiya Shetty or a Sonakshi Sinha or an Arjun Kapoor, getting multiple crores of rupees for a new film even if their last one flopped.. if there was a doctor son of a doctor dad, after one mistake on the operation table he'd be ostracized in the society.

      Well... when you are 5 year old (eldest child) an suddenly infront of your own eyes seeing your family going bankrupt, from rich to rags losing all the luxury of the life and then had to live a poor and cheap. When u cant even afford to celebrate your own birthday but was able to celebrate it with your (Honey Irani)aunt's son aka your cousin(Frahan Akhtar) because you luckily have same date of birth.
      When have you seen your young ones(Sajid Khan) being sad and sort of frustrated with this life
      And then you on your own became successful choreographer starting quite fresh and young(a field unrecognised back then) and than to a director.
      Seeing all this regressive past and making a few crazy films for crazy sum of money ... i wont call her morally bad or unethical, she does all this beacuse she knows how IMPORTANT MONEY IS in life. And same of the reasons for Sajid khan for all his filmography.

    I disagree with the people's resentment over choice of artists for this. I feel Farah and Raj represent polar opposite schools of thought in terms of film making, both of which are crucial and must exist simultaneously for a thriving industry.
    Their conflicting views, expressed in a light (from Farah) or respectable (From Raj) manner was really enjoyable to watch. I absolutely loved it when Raj pointed out that there are indeed star kids who receive a lot of love and appreciation from the audience. Nepotism becomes an issue when non-deserving, untalented star kids are doled out these opportunities, ignoring talent. He put that across so concisely and cordially. Much to be learnt from his civil, yet not submissive demeanour. All the very best to him!
    As always, thank you Film Companion :) This series is truly a delight to watch.
