- Welcome to Episode 8 of the Mind the Game podcast with JJ Redick and LeBron James. We have a fantastic show for you all today covering all things 2024 NBA Playoffs. First up, we discuss Bronny James going through the combine and the NBA draft process and what it's like for LeBron as a father. Then we dive into the NBA Playoffs - starting with a conversation around the MVPs of these playoffs - the role players. Guys like Naz Reid, P.J. Washington, T. J. McConnel and more. Then we dive into the Eastern Conference Finals between Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers and Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics. We discuss why the Celtics are so difficult to guard and how Indiana makes defenses uncomfortable. Then we dive into the Western Conference Finals between Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves and Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks. LeBron and JJ discuss Ant and Luka's ability to go away from ballscreens like Dwyane Wade and how the Wolves make the court smaller with their defense. Finally, LeBron weighs in on the hate Caitlin Clark has gotten so far in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever.

At 31:36, LeBron emphasizes that Boston wants to shoot at least 45 threes a game. In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Pacers, the Celtics shoot 45 threes… 🤯
It's common knowledge that Mazzulla wants his team to attempt at least 45 3's a game. It's in every team's scouting report.
45 threes with 30 free throws is insane. Especially when the Pacers got 10 free throws
@mangesh9034305 Interesting since back when Bron played against Boston- shooting 3 pointers. This was brought up numerous times by Bron and confirmed by Rondo. I am thinking shooting multiple 3's per game is a Celtics tradition.
@@gingervsginger7305 four of those in OT xD 6 free throws in regulation is nutz.
@@gingervsginger7305 Celtics barely fouled. The one foul by Pritchard on Haliburton in the second half was missed by the refs. Refs were terrible last night for both teams. Mazzulla used his challenge 35 seconds in to the game.

Derrick White also. Single handley won Boston a cpl games by himself it seem like

Funny to see JJ doing his best not to smile ear to ear when Bron praised TJ McConnell. He's obviously really happy to have such a legend talk this nicely about his close friend, but also needs to keep it together and not play favoritism. Wholesome moment though, I'm fairly sure TJ will thank him over a glass of wine :)
Why does he need to not play favoritism.
@@masongreen1371 Just my opinion, so take it as that, but I feel that it is expected from someone aspiring to be NBA Head Coach to be able to separate personal life/relationships from "the Game".
Not saying he cannot show happiness for his friend, but keeping straight face might be a useful trait for handling all the responsibilities of being a Head Coach.

Then why did he get rid of all Lakers role players of 2020 championship season for……Russell Westbrook
@@tileavenue ngl you try bringing back that team, back at that level there is no way their salaries will come within limits. There must have been issues financially and emotionally. You also take one piece out everything collapses. We Lakers fans still have no idea but there should have been major issues to get rid of the one of the best teams Lakers had in 20 years.
@@tileavenueBC that’s what Rob Pelinka wanted. He is the GM. Better question is why didn’t they sign Ty Lue and even after WB why didn’t they pay Caruso? Oh wait, same answer bc that’s what the GM and Owner wanted
the issue is role players in good teams becomes star quality in bad teams and obviously guys will want the big contracts. Unfortunately un today's basketball it's hard to keep good teams together for big period of time and teams have to pick and choose between 2 or 3 major guy and shuvle the rest. Greatest basketball podcast explaining the game - plays, coverages, strengths, weaknesses etc. I swear as I watch the games, I'm actually seeing the plays that are being explained on here being ran before my eyes and how the opposing team attempts to counter act. Amazing. Great work guys...keep it up.
YEP!!
(we feel the same way)
Hi JJ and Lebron, as someone who's always wanted to learn basketball strategy and nuances behind the plays this podcast has been really great. A suggestion: When JJ explains plays in the beginning it would be great if you could show a video of an example of what you are explaining.
you PAY nothing for these episodes,
it's FREE .. duh!
D Wade's execution of the 'Drive Away' move was one of the reason he aesthetically was such a smooth player, he executed that play to perfection every time! D wade one of my faves of all time! By the way, 5:17 , too funny how JJ explained the most complex play of all for a whole damn minute: The advanced pass 😂😂😂. I think we all get it when we hear the term (even if you don't play bball lol)
Flash was great at getting to the hoop and finishing off the drive away but rejecting screens is nothing new and neither is the advance pass off an outlet pass to beat a team to the basket that might be slow getting back on D. Also, the pick and roll has always been the most basic play in 🏀 and drop/hedge/blitz/switching coverage are just KYP (know your personnel) options for the situation. The defensive rotations and counter moves offensively are what intrigues me now. I played in the throw it into the post and clear out days where there was a lot of 1-on-1, which was fun but this pace and space era is not just fun to play but more interesting to watch
Production improves with each episode
Man, I feel irrelevant talking here, but first that logo for the podcast is fire. Second, I am not even kidding you, despite I don't understand most of the lexicon that is been used here, while knowing I played basketball for fun in my youth and still love it, you guys are hell of conversationalist and would have loved to meet you even though I wouldn't survive a second in your technical world. What I know for certain is that you speak my language, the language of people who think before they speak and do know what they are talking about, so we could connect on that level no matter the subject matter. Third, and I am not even lying, I took the time to come back to that podcast that JJ Redick is referring to when he speaks about Lebron's teammates hating on him. He does really talk about that in fact. And his guest did have quite a reaction to coach Paul Silas' quote. Man, thank you for showing to the world that, no matter the media, we still can do a hell of a job and still excel at it. That abreviation that Lebron came up with (FAT) though is so brilliant that it did in fact blew my mind and still does. Propos to you both for spreading the word of wisdom, whatever the subject matter may be. Peace
