Ein Schuhkarton voller Musik
Seit Ewigkeiten hatte ich keinen funktionierenden Kassettenrecorder mehr, meine Tapes stellten lange Zeit nur so eine Art Zusatzballast bei Umzügen dar. Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich dann auf einem Flohmarkt ein gutes Tape Deck für schmales Geld erworben. Mit Begeisterung stürze ich mich seitdem auf den Schuhkarton voller Live Tapes, die ich damals beim Abmischen FOH nebenher aufgenommen hab. Was damals eher unspektakulär als eine Form der "Arbeitskontrolle" nebenher mitlief, ist im laufe der Jahre zum Zeitdokument gewachsen.
Der Schuhkarton ist leider nur ein winziger Rest dessen, was es einmal gab. Viele Tapes hab ich damals verschenkt, oder sie sind einfach verloren gegangen.
Die Bänder waren nie zur Veröffentlichung vorgesehen, einfach nur als grobe "Arbeitsskizzen" gedacht.
Oft sind sie übersteuert, manchmal wird mitten im Lied kräftig nachreguliert. Manche Titel brechen mittendrin ab, weil das Band zu Ende war, die Fortsetzung folgt dann, günstigstenfalls auf der nächsten Seite.
Gitarre und Bass scheinen manchmal im Verhältnis etwas zu leise abgemischt. Schon auf der Bühne verstärkte Instrumente waren halt oft dort schon so laut, dass sie im FOH nur noch schwach berücksichtigt wurden. Der Sound sollte ja im Saal stimmen, das Tape war egal.
Mit Freude und Neugierde digitalisiere ich die alten Sachen nun und möchte diese Freude darüber auf diesem Weg mit euch teilen.
Mal sehen, was ich da noch ausgraben werde.

I found out that Stella passed away today. I salute a great artist. She inspired millions of people with her music and was a brave fighter for her people.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen her for a very long time, but I am infinitely grateful for the earlier encounters with this wonderful, strong woman
May she rest in peace and may her family find comfort.

A masterpiece!!! Most of us especially young Zimbabweans are missing out on our wonderful musical heritage because we have been raised to shun most things associated with our traditional culture and regard them as backward and sinful, a problem that is considerably due to the influence of Christianity. For example most Zimbabweans regard mbira music and even the instrument itself with a lot of superstition. Zimbabweans we need to fall in love with our beautiful cultural heritage again, it is our unique contribution to the greater body of human culture.

That's a tragedy. I'm from the U.S. and I think this is some of the most beautiful music ever created! Thank God that it can be recorded and shared with the world. May beauty win out in the end.

In 1987 I was outside in the sun in Buhera waiting for my doctor relative to finish a clinic. There was no one else near me. A lone figure came across the dust, a dishevelled young man playing an mbira in a gourd as he ambled up to me. Beautiful gentle music. He quietly talked to me in Shona. I replied in English. There was no shared language. As I looked at his face my world collapsed into his eyes. I could hardly breath and couldnt move or tear my eyes away. I was trapped and being sucked in. It was very frightening.
He turned and walked away still playing to the other side of the clinic shed. I was shaking. Heart racing. Shocked.
My relative came out with the local nurse and we went over to the Landrover to go back to town. The mbira player came over to talk to the nurse who was shooing him away and turning away from him. My relative asked her what he wanted. She said he wanted a lift to town. My relative said he could get in the pickup back (because he was dirty, unusual for the area). No, no she said. He is a bad man. He will bewitch you. And if he got in the vehicle she would walk. So we left him standing in the dust, playing his mbira as we drove away.
One of the occasional unexplained things in my life. No mutual communication except the mbira music. How did he do that?
Maybe he was an Angel.
How Zimbabweans were simple robbed their identity, pamberi nembira, I believe one day our culture values will be restored and our children especially Shona will treasure it!!!

könnte dir nen roman erzählen über meinen weg zu afrikanischer musik, der mit dem naiven kauf einer "explorer" platte auf einem flohmarkt mitte der 70er begann - ich hab danach lange jahre verzweifelt nach weiterer musik in der art gesucht und wurde erst im völkerkunde museum in berlin fündig (die doppel lp mit äthiopischer musik zählt immer noch zu den schönsten die ich kenne, sehr sorgfältig und liebevoll gemacht und mit schönem infoheft dabei) - ich habe das gefühl, mit dem auftritt von king sunny adé im rockpalast 1983 wurde eine tür geöffnet - habe ihn danach zweimal live gesehen und unzählige andere afrikanische bands, die dann hier durch deutschland getourt sind - unvergessliche abende - deine beschreibung ist köstlich, bin selber amateur reggae musiker und habe auch noch mehrere "giftkoffer" mit live aufnahmen auf dem dachboden, die haargenauso entstanden sind, wie du es beschrieben hast... :-)
bin gerade dabei, die sechs bananenkartons voller kassetten zu entsorgen mit irgendwelchen platten drauf, die mich entweder micht mehr interessieren, oder die ich jetzt längst anderweitig auf cd oder hier auf dem pc habe...
ich freue mich sehr über die tolle musik hier, bin jetzt mittendrin und es gefällt mir großartig, auch gerade weil es wirklich absolut authentisch live ist...
für den fall, dass du ihn noch nicht kennst, möchte ich dir unbedingt "Forward Kwenda plays Tadzungaira" empfehlen, ein meister, der mich beim ersten hören beinahe zu tränen gerührt hat...

Hallo Friesiamans Vielen herzlichen Dank für deinen ausführlichen Kommentar. Selber kann ich nicht genau sagen, wie ich afrikanische Musik für mich entdeckte. Einen großen Einfluss hatte sicher Bob Marley. Das war zwar keine afrikanische Musik, ebnete mir aber den Weg dort hin. Das waren damals neue, ungewohnte Klänge, die mich als jugendlicher begeisterten. Erstaunlich, dass du King Sunny erwähnst. Das sehe ich ähnlich. Die Grugahalle war damals oft Pilgerstädte, wenn der Rockpalast dort gastierte. War noch nah genug um für einen Abend dort hin zu fahren - man mußte nur einen Großen finden, der schon Auto und Führerschein hatte. Unvergessen auch das Pattie Smith Konzert dort.
Danke auch für den Tipp mit "Forward Kwenda plays Tadzungaira", den hatte ich tatsächlich noch nicht auf dem Schirm.

pattie smith habe ich damals im tv gesehen und war auch hingerissen - kenne einige, denen es so ging...
bob marley habe ich live 1978 live auf dem roskilde festival erleben dürfen: das war ein kulturschock für mich und hat mein leben verändert - bin dann anfang der 80er selber reggaemusiker geworden und hab in etlichen bands gespielt - war eigentlich immer auf der suche nach einem deutschen reggaesound...
youtube macht es mir schwer, links zu versenden, geht höchstens, wenn ich nichts dazu schreibe, werd´s gleich mal probieren...
