Roger, Thank you for your reply! Still The Final Cut is my all time favorite of Pink Floyd! It’s the piece from the first second to the final which really touch me! And luckily almost all the album you sand it yourself! I consider your voice much heartfelt, the way more sincere than Dave’s!

It’s so sad you never played it live in the whole version! As the Amused to death work!

It used to be my favorite but I realized it was too depressing and messed with my psyche. However the song "The FInal Cut" from that album is still a gem. Echoes, Shine on you crazy diamond, comfortably numb, Welcome to the Machine, Yet another Movie, Time, Things left unsaid, and Learning to fly are my go to PF songs. Side note: Roger Waters song the powers that be is kinda cool too

Interesting take & view on the production of that album, Roger - very... songwriter-ish, so to speak.
Totally understand what you mean, but to me ans for my taste, the production of The Final Cut is flawless. From a Floydian sonic history standpoint, despite missing Rick's legendary keyboard work it sounds like the culmination of many things and trends the band outlined or pioneered: it's ambiental, immersive, startling, touching, emotional, engaging, outspoken, political and personal and relatable.
      And it sounds HUGE.
The drums and guitar solos in "Fletcher Memorial Home" and "The Final Cut" are thunderously powerful, like an oversized rhino breaking down the Hoover dam.
And those parts you mention, in "Your Possible Pasts", are what I play in the studio to explain the power of dynamics in rock... or to startle the unwary passenger in my car.

The final cut sounds like Roger's first solo album with the assistance of Gilmour and Mason. Sorry, but there is no real Pink Floyd sound to me without Wright's iconic and unique keyboard play, whether he was writing songs or not. Brought so much sensitivity and texture to the sound. However when he did (like his solo work) I think it was also remarkable.

As odd as it may be for some, at aged 17 I heard The Final Cut album and it became my favourite Pink Floyd record over many years thereafter. To this day, it's my go-to record whenever I add a new bit of kit or make some other change to my audio setup, as I know and love every moment of that record. It's a stunning album, and it blew the bloody doors off the possibilities that a rock album could be. At the risk of sounding parochial here, it's just about the last of the great English rock albums, and it talks about my homeland in an unshowy but passionate way that I've never heard captured before or since. I've remained a fan particularly of Roger ever since then, including his version of Pink Floyd, which is the definitive one if the category is outstanding english rock bands, and own all the albums (including one of the mega-set The Wall copies limited to 1500) and have attended at least once to a concert on each of his tours ever since - including Ca Ira which I travelled to Poznan for. So I hope that The Final Cut stays pretty much the same!! I personally think that Animals is ripe for reexamination - there's much on there that could be added to lyrically, as well as being thematically updated, and I can find some of the musical longueurs at times a little boring.

The Final Cut is a underrated masterpiece, but I get what Roger is saying here.

There's really something to be said here, Roger. There's a newer band called Larkin Poe that plays stripped down versions of rock classics and their own original songs usually with an acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar (sometimes a dobro is substituted), and vocals only. They've played a cover of Wish You Were Here this way on CZcams. The lyrics are more meaningful and the emotions are deeper this way. I wish you and your family a Happy Christmas. 👍💖🎸😎

Roger, you need to know when to put down the pencil. Star Wars didn't need to have CGI dewbacks to 'fix it'. Final Cut is a masterpiece and still one of my favorite albums of all time. You're too close to it and the industry. It came out at a time when CDs and digital media were new and the dynamic range was part of the experience. It WASN'T one level of loudness. That range allowed it to go from melancholy to rage and back. I still sweat through the end of Hero's Return and down into the subtlety of Gunner's Dream: "a place to stay, enough to eat..." Listening to it now. It's perfect.

I couldn't disagree more. The production on The Final Cut is one of its many strengths. It is dramatic material that requires a dramatic sound. The forward drums in the mix lends itself to that 40's war-era feel of the record. It's positively transcendant and i think that the album is criminally overlooked in the Pink Floyd canon.

I think a redone Wall would be incredible with the cut songs like "The Hero's Return", "Reminiscing", "When the Tigers Broke Free", and "Vera" on side 1, "What Shall We Do Now?" replacing "Empty Spaces" on side 2, and "Your Possible Pasts" and "The Final Cut" on side 3, with "Comfortably Numb" having the orchestral intro and opening side 4 instead of ending side 3. To be clear, this would have guitars and drums on it, not like the Dark Side of the Moon Redux which is good, but more like spoken poetry.
In my opinion a lot of the core themes and Pink Floyd sound of The Wall got lost during production when Ezrin added the poppy disco vibe, it's still a good record, but Rick's influence is so unfortunately diminished compared to his synth work on some of those demos.
If Waters would redo the solo album he did in 1987 "Radio K.A.O.S.", that would be great as well. It would be especially fitting as Jim Ladd unfortunately passed away a few months ago.

Interesting take & view on the production of that album, Roger - very... songwriter-ish, so to speak.
Totally understand what you mean, but to me and for my taste, the production of The Final Cut is flawless.
The drums and guitar solos in "Fletcher Memorial Home" and "The Final Cut" are masterpieces, memorable and thunderously powerful, like an oversized rhino tearing down the Hoover dam.
And those parts you mention, in "Your Possible Pasts", are what I play in the studio to explain the power of dynamics in rock... or to startle the unwary passenger in my car.
    💥👌🏼

The Final cut is one of the if not "THE" favourite album is mine. I memorized whole album of the Final cut, The wall, Dark side, Wish you were here, Pros & cons & of course Amused to death. ... I knew it's gonna happened & I waited for the right moment finally when I was 17 Amused to death in 1992 & in a fateful midnight The Final cut & Dark side got me to Pink Floyd & Roger waters. .. never bothered to listen to other Pink floyd albums after the final cut instead always cherished Roger's solos. .. 1:05 it was perfect as it is in my humble opinion but who knows what'd be like if it otherwise.

    Remake Music From The Body.😂
Love your music/lyrics with PF and your solo stuff. Amused To Death is awesome.
So many great songs, if I had to pick one as best it would probably be Time, or Shine On pts 1 through 9, or Mother, or Dogs, or Hey You, or When The Tigers Broke Free, or We Were Watching TV, or Home, or.....

A mí me encanta "two suns in the sunset". Todavía, tristemente, es muy actual. Esas imágenes a la vez tan vívidas y metafóricas, a la vez tan tristes y serenas, como que ya no hay nada por lo que luchar... "Could be the human race is done?". Ese desconsuelo, que a mí a veces me aporta un poco de consuelo... Pero la vida sigue...

The Final Cut was given to me as my first CD in 1985. It is my favorite album of any. The acoustic dynamics (including the drums), story telling, and poetic production make it a piece of fine art. Please do not remake it. I would wish that you would honor it more in your live shows. God bless.

I actually like Final Cut but as for drums (and I even say this as a drummer), the whole album is silence until BAM, BOODOO DO YOU REMEMBER ME parts. It's not the mix, it's the writing. Poor old Nick had nothing to do in that album until he was needed for explosions. It's less of an album and more of an audio book set to music, before but not exceeding the amount in Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking.

I can't stand to have negativity be the top response here. The Final Cut is an emotional masterpiece. The writing is some of the most personal Roger has ever done, yet the album catches h e double hockey sticks because of all the behind the scenes stuff that shouldn't really matter.
It contains the last line Pink Floyd ever produced together and maybe the most powerful.
    Ashes and Diamonds.
    Foe and Friend.
We were all equal, in the end.
It is so on purpose from top to bottom.
    The dissolution of childhood friendship.
It is a goodbye letter to us and to his father.
I've never understood the hate it gets.

I don't mind admitting that as a kid in the 80s with a Pink Floyd-loving dad, I didn't think much of The Final Cut. I liked "Not Now John" and that was about it. But then I grew up, decided to give it another spin, and with a few more years (well, decades...) on the clock, everything made sense. I think you need a bit of maturity - or at least an understanding of the era (Thatcher, The Falklands, the IRA, the destruction of British industry, the betrayal of the "Post War Dream," the threat of nuclear armageddon hanging over everyone, etc.) - to really "get" that album. But when you do get it, it's a bit special.

Final Cut thematically makes way more sense mixed theatrically than as a “band” sound, you got it right the first time.

As far as I'm concerned, Rodger can redo everything he ever did.
Not to take away _anything_ from those classics, but to _add_ another point of view to them. I thought his redo of Comfortably Numb was absolutely brilliant in every way, as is the original.
    Art needs room to breathe.
    Let it.

I agree with your assessment with the drum on Your Possible Pasts. I have always thought of it as overbearing but still enjoyed it....I was 23 when the album came out and still have it and the cassette and the CD.

  • @MK-zm8vl
    @MK-zm8vl Před 6 měsíci

Well.... the dynamics in Your Possible Past are what give the track depth and meaning in my view.... heavy drum fills followed by pleading vocals. Coming off the success of The Wall, I can see the tendancy to try and overproduce The Final Cut. ....Peculiar you mention "just the band" playing the songs.... sadly doesnt seem there was much of one left by then... the realization of an impossible past.
