In fairness, a lot of people now know Gwen via Spider-Gwen, and don't really know (or care) about original Gwen.

So in the comics, Gwen Stacy was Spiderman's first major love interest. However, she did die in a confrontation between Spiderman and the Green Goblin like in this movie. Ironically, she hated Spiderman at the time for the death of her father, but she didn't know her boyfriend Peter Parker was Spiderman. Soon after Gwen's death, Mary Jane Watson who was Peter's friend at the time, would date Peter and become his longtime girlfriend.

A brief spider-man love interest history: Liz Allen had a crush on Peter which led to confrontations with a bully Flash. Betty Brant "the older woman" had a fling with him. Mary Jane was pushed on him by his and her aunts. They hung out together more as friends as she was Harry's gf. Gwen was his first true love. They wrote him into a corner and the only thing left was marriage. They didn't want the character married at the time so chose to kill her off. It ended the silver age of comics and stood out due spider-man inadvertently snapping her neck while trying to save her. The movie watered that down.

Actually, the writer at the time thought that Peter was more interesting when he had nothing but hardship in his life so thought that Gwen made him too happy. So, just before Stan Lee was leaving for Europe for a convention the writer ambushed Stan while he was distracted hurrying to get to the airport and asked Stan ....have fun in Europe!can I kill off Gwen?!.... and Stan being distracted and going out the door told him "Do what you like, your the writer." Probably not really listening to him. By the time he got back from his trip the nefarious deed was done. What a snake!!!
And even worse! What that rat writer didn't know was that Gwen's character was modeled on Stan's own real life wife! So he killed Gwen AND Stan's wife essentially!

The Amazing Spider-Man #121 from 1973. The death of Gwen Stacy.
I read it when it was in reprints, but still way too young.
Mary Jane Watson was Aunt May's neighbor's niece that they were trying to set Peter up with. The obvious joke was she was the girl with the good personality. She was teased but never shown until Amazing Spider-Man #25 (1965) when she finally appeared on the final page with the classic line, "Face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot!"
Gwen Stacy was Peter's girlfriend at Empire State University. Her dad, as in the movie, was the cop who died in order to fulfill Peter's quotient of guilt and angst. She died when the Green Goblin knocked her off one of the towers of the George Washington Bridge. Just like in the movie, Spider-Man webbed her at the last moment, but her neck snapped from the force of her fall.
It was traumatizing for six-year-old Mike.
He finally got things together with MJ, and they married in 1987.
    Then things got complicated.

There are over 60 years of comics that the movies pull from, and Peter has dated many characters over the years. So the first trilogy they used Mary Jane. Then when they rebooted they decided to use Gwen.

Final Fun Fact - I swear: Spider-Man's webs have been said to have a tensile strength strong enough to even hold Hulk for a brief amount of time. They are very VERY strong. He also keeps various different cartridges, with varying web effects. That being said no matter how "strong" the webs are. they are biodegradable, meaning they dissolve themselves after a certain amount of time (generally about an hour or two) and they are rather easily cut with sharp edges. So while they cannot be easily ripped apart with bare hands, a good survival knife will will do the trick.

It's that pathos, the falls, and how he still gets back up to fight the good fight, that are a very large reason he's so popular. People identify with his pain, and the fact that he always gets back up is an inspiration to readers/watchers who don't feel like they can.

Some context for the comparison between the different versions.
The mechanical web-shooters vs the natural: In the source material (the comics) to my recollection there was only one time that the webbing was natural, and that was a story arc where the spider portion became dominant, and Peter no longer even looked human. All other times Peter relied on his scientific and engineering genius to supplement his supernatural powers, he developed the shooters as well as a few other gizmos to help in his crime fighting.
Gwen vs MJ: in the comics Gwen was his first love interest, starting in high school. MJ came along later when they were young adults, their meeting was arranged by Aunt May and one of her friends who played matchmaker and set up a blind date.

So there's a deleted /alternate scene at the end of the movie showing Peter at Gwen's Grave (although to be fair it could have been Uncle Ben's grave) and a man just walks up beside Peter. Petere doesn't notice at first because he's lost in thought, but he looks up casually and sees his Father standing there. They get into a kind of mini argument - basically the "where have you been stuff.
The director himself LOVED the scene and thought it was very emotionally charged and well performed, but test audiences felt the scene stole all the emotion away from Gwen's death that just happened like not even two minutes ago, essentially delegating her death to the background.
