A study claiming that Nestle is selling baby products with higher sugar content in India by as much as 2.7 gm per serving compared to developed nations in the West has understandably raised health concerns about infants.
Added sugars should not be given to infants, toddlers or very young children because they don’t need it. They get their sugar from natural sources and lactose in their mother’s milk for the first 24 months of their lives. These are enough to meet their needs for normal growth and development.
In fact, the WHO recommends that adults themselves should not get more than 10 per cent of their calories from sugar and ideally push it down to less than five per cent. That’s why you have to be super careful with infants.
