DIY Faux Concrete Wall

This is pretty good for DIY, and cheap. I'm a plasterer in the UK, and I just did a wall in an Italian lime cement that does the same look. It cost £180 for a small bucket of powder.
I would recommend going over your walls with either a wax or a clear matte varnish of some sort. Drywall compound is designed to be sealed with paint and considering you are in a bathroom it is only a matter of time before it starts to disintegrate. If it gets quite wet it will turn back into mush. A clear matte varnish might be your best bet as a wax could cause problems down the road if you decided to sand it back and paint it.

Followed this tutorial remodelling our home office/studio .. and it was the hardest thing i have ever done in my life !!!!! Its so so so much work (though the results are worth it) . And it was soooooo Cheap compared to other “cement effect” options. Cost me my sanity and also my lower back 🥲

Great video, great concept, and great job... A couple of quick questions: Do you have a site that shows some angled closeups of the final texture? (I want a smoother kinda sorta .concrete look for a long living room/dining room with large windows). I am also thinking about going for a similar look on for ceiling on my entire condo; any suggestions?
We are currently working on a website! If you want feel free to email us at justinandjessdiy@gmail.com and we can send you some more photos close up:) It definitely is possible to get a smoother texture as long as you mix your colors on the wall immediately after they are put on. You will need to focus on just one section at a time and you can make it nice and smooth! As for a ceiling that would look amazing! We did have quite a bit of dust fallout in the first couple of months but after that initial time period we have not had any additional dust from the faux concrete walls!

Thank you for posting it came out great! I’m planning on remodeling our restroom did you guys use anything to protect the mud, I’ve heard that the humidity in the restroom can destroy the faux cement walls. How’s it been for you guys?
Good luck!! And it has been perfectly fine! We have a fan and window that we use if we're taking a shower but we haven't had any problems so far and we've had it up about 5 months. If a lot of water does get on it it will break down but we're good so far!
looks great, did you use anything to seal the mud? since its in a wet/moist area.
We didn’t but you could easily seal it with some sort of acrylic sealant:) It has held up really well for us and we are careful about not getting any areas super wet. I do not mind the imperfect look of it even if it was to get wet.

It hasn't affected ours at all!! We do either run a fan or keep the window open while taking a shower so our bathroom does not hold humidity at all.

I still have one question. I may have overlooked it in yalls video but at what point did you guys use the medium mix. It looked like y'all used the dark as a base and then went right with the light mix to go over the spots. Did y'all just randomly alternate between the light and medium mix to cover the spots or was there more of an order as to when you would use one over the other? Hope that makes sense. Thanks
We started with the dark as the base and then filled in spots with the medium and then small patches of light to blend it all together. And then just depending on the section we would blend and just do it by eye. Hope this helps!

Wow you saved me hundreds of dollars! I heard to let the first dark layer dry first before applying the next two, if you could do it again, would you do that?
Yeay we are so glad!! And honestly we would still do the same process since it was easier to mix on the walls and make it look smoother if you did all of the colors at once! There were a few areas we had to go back in and fix some more after the initial layer had dried and we found it wasn't as smooth in those places. Which we are okay with since it is perfectly imperfect:)
Great work you two- are you able to make new holes in the wall without damaging your work? Thinking of doing this... should I make necessary screw holes prior to apply faux concrete?
Thanks so much!! And you can easily make holes in the wall without any damage! The only thing it will cause is a bit more dust when screwing anything in but no damage to the look at all.

We just blended!
How do you wash your bucket or keep the joint compound wet for the next day to paint again?
Just with warm water, hose, or we just covered ours and added a stitch of water the next day 😊
Helpful video! I have a question tho, do we have to wait for the darker grey to dry up first before placing the lighter grey on top of it or are they supposed to sort of mix?
They mix. So as soon as you do a section of dark, mix in the medium and light. It’ll all blend and dry together

We did not. Just left it as is, and almost 2 years later it has held up very well.

We didn't leave the bottom layers to dry, we found you can mix it better when it is still wet and easier to mix! You could leave them to dry it would just look a bit patchier than ours!

Can this be done on a wall that has texture? Or does the wall need to be sanded smooth first?
Seeing that the faux concrete wall is a texture itself, not sure how texture upon texture would work. Depending upon what you’re working with, might be worth a try!
Maybe try a section of the wall to see, and then defer to sanding if doesn’t work

How do you finished any clear coat did you sand it or polish it later...
We just left it natural as is! We have had no issues so far!
Remember to seal it with a clear coat, especially in a bathroom. Good job though.

I have been wanting to do this in my entrance way. I have concrete floors and love them. Did you need to seal it with something?
We did not seal it at all and it still looks lovely! I will say it can create a bit of “dust” from the walls so you can seal it if you want! We still love this area of our house!

So you technically could sand it down but not sure how much damage that would create! Another option is you could use 3 different shades of paint and mix with a dry brush on the wall while they are still slightly wet. It won't look exactly the same but could be a cool affect!

You could but we are unsure how that would turn out! If we were to have done paint I would have done three different colors as well and stippled them onto the wall with a sponge and let the colors dry in between:)

Has it held up well with the steam of a shower? Would you recommend something to water proof it?
Yes absolutely! Several hot showers in and it’s fine. Being that it’s just a drywall joint compound I’m not sure there is anything out there that will seal it, and it also should holdup to steam
@@justinandjessdiy using a water-based matte varnish can seal this bad boy up no problem - due to the nature of compound - in the absence of paint - you want a bit of dust control
how does it feel to the touch?
It definitely feels dry and has texture!
How did you seal it from moisture?
We didn't and it has held up well! We have both a fan and window in the bathroom and it doesn't hold a lot of moisture in there or get super humid in the bathroom which is great!
Yea but if something gets on the wall and requires being wiped off with water it’ll strip the compound away. I think it looks great but doing compound only will have to be touched up because it turns to dust pretty easily.
Which store did you buy supplies from?
We got our supplies from Lowes! Such a fun project to do!

I would say not:( It is possible to sand this down when leaving but it would take a lot of effort I would say. There is the possibility to mix paint on the walls to create this look you just wouldn't have the texture behind it is all!
does it produce any fall outs?
It does produce a bit more dust than a normal room would! But I just wipe the baseboards up about once a week when I'm cleaning and that is all!
It’s beautiful!! I want to do this for my apartment- do you think it’s possible to make it look textured but not actually be quite textured? I would love to make it textured but just am worried about when we move out how to smooth it!
You could use less products! You would still most likely have to sand it down before moving out though. I know you could also do a similar technique with different colors of paint and a cheesecloth and it would have a similar look just not have any texture really!
