I don't like Rollerdrome

- Rollerdrome takes an honest crack at answering the age-old question: what if Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was a third person shooter?

#rollerdrome - Hry
I think the "sanitized" look of the arena has the purpose of making the sport look just like a corporate soulless product, same goes for the competitors uniforms, the announcer monotonous voice, the faceless crowds behind the tinted glass, etc. The player has fun by feeling bad ass, but the character is not having fun at all in there.
I can't hear you over how good the game is.
Real
Lol true
Way to not engage. How about articulating a counterargument?
lol
I think you have to consider why the mechanics of a shooter and skater had to be simplified as well as the visuals. Having that kind of visual clarity in a fast paced shooter like this is a godsend for player accountability; and if you listen to developer commentary it seems they started with all the common mechanics for a third person shooter and skater and continued to simplify things to balance the difficulty. Its a hard game. It does still take skill to aim and also there is a lot of depth in choosing what weapons to use :0
16:00 the design isn’t uninspired. It looks like its inspired by 80s dystopian scifi action movies like rollerball and the running man mixed with actual roller derby arenas
I think he means uninspired level design, as opposed to art design.
I like the aesthetic of the game but the level layouts are pretty bare bones.
@@TheReginaldBarrisVerticality is already a problem when transitions aren't a thing and ramps leading to a higher level aren't common. Also the combo multiplier mechanic would not be as fluent since you can't combo tricks to keep it burning. If you add that then it would be too easy to get score. The game is hard enough as is and the level designs are fine. These people aren't unfamiliar with any kind of skating levels, they made the Olli Olli games, they know rhythm and flow well.
@@Skellotronixstopped reading your comment because you obviously didnt put much time in learning the game. there are transitions by holding lb
I agree with some elements. For a game based around a blood sport its can be very quiet and lifeless. Feels like a commentary would help.
But, I love the inspiration the game takes from both roller derby and the movie roller ball. Its a warm 70's dystopia and the warm wood, oranges and reds of the gymnasium capture that better than anywhere. I love cyberpunk but was really refreshed by the choices here that showed off something new and interesting.
THANK YOU!
I really, really wanted to like this game, but I can't get into it. Your points really resonate within me, I'd call it a mediocre game that doesn't live up to the potential of its premise.
Still, I'm glad it got a good reception and I hope that allows for a sequel with more pep in the gunplay, more variety in level design and a stronger connection between story and gameplay.
Gotta agree with you. It's not an awful game, but putting such a huge emphasis on having to check off challenges to progress got to be really tedious, and maneuvering the character (not tricks, just actually moving her around) was a pain in the ass. Your analysis was pretty on point I think.
That's really the only thing I don't like about the game that you focus more on trying to complete the challenges so you can progress other than that I liked the game entirely
Just by looking at gameplay, and the game's visuals/aesthetics I can tell you the impression is that it plays amazingly smooth & makes you feel badass to the max. However, I can't shake the feeling it would be even cooler if there was melee (martial arts kinda stuff, some simple roller kicks, or even basic melee weapons like bats/batons and stuff). Personally I wouldn't even care if those would fit in (lore-wise, or realism-checked), or not - I just feel the game would benefit so much from adding those.
Some good points have been made in the comments. If I were to remake this video, I would have dropped or modified a lot of the things that I discussed.
Do you have to kill everyone? Or how does the run end? It feels like I'm playing forever until I finally die 10 minutes later... How do I finish a run?? It has felt random so far
You kill everyone. You have to have Down syndrome not to know this.
You have to kill all enemies, but they do spawn in set instances. When one group is killed, then another spawns in. It's fixed compositions of enemies in specific spots.
That’s so funny, the arena levels were my favorites. I found them to be the most fun to string together tricks with kill combos.
It’s interesting to hear how wildly different your views of this game are from my own. What I see as a mash of simple systems perfectly balanced to make a challenging experience with loads of replayability, you see several weak game systems that don’t quite mesh together to form a cohesive experience.
To your point about this game being sequel bait, I certainly hope you’re right! Because this was my game of the year when it came out and still gets some play to this day, so I’d be stoked for Rollerdrome 2: Hassan Blows Up Matterhorn
love your vids man!
I appreciate you, bro. This one, specifically, was probably the most fun to make.
think you make some solid points, i still enjoy the game as a sum of its parts. recommend watching the talk the main level designer gave at GDC to understand why the levels are so simple. hopefully the sequel takes things to the next level
I gotta play this game and I'll go add you onTwitter for sure. Great video dude.
9:28 little correction: While Plata does indeed mean Silver in Spanish, it can also be slang for "Money" so the phrase would be more like "Money or lead"
Plata blanca y plomo [bullet/lead]
So, not a correction at all? Translations aren't exactly literal. The "silver" in "silver or lead" clearly implies money. This is one of the dumbest instances of pedantry I have encountered.
It's crazy how butt hurt people get when you say you don't like a game they do lmao Rollerdrome is a middling game with boring design and crappy controls, I was done and bored with it before I even cleared the 5th level.
Found you from the carbon video, really like the content so far. Probably going to watch all the backlog now! Love the dry humor lol
I think the flow of the game is pretty good when ur 100% locked in and completely dominating. But I do think the levels themselves are kinda uninteresting n lack in diversity. They should have added a lot more levels, and a lot more power ups and cooler flashier stuff. It’s pretty repetitive.
They banked on the fact that u can skate and shoot and kinda left everything else to the way side. They did decent with the story and art style and it has pinache but lacking in the dopamine hits that I need to keep me gaming.
A great example of something like this done well is the game FURI.
I looove this game. I guess everyone is different.
Aiming is the biggest problem with this game. Vanquish and returnal are good exemples of it done better. Vanquish puts the auto target (easy mode) on one of the dlc weapons. My 5 year old brother enjoys vanquish more than rollerdrome, so really i think they should stop worrying about player skill. If the game has interesting mechanics, people will try to be better at it regardless of their skill level.
"If the game has interesting mechanics, people will try to be better at it regardless of their skill level."
Perfectly sums up my feeling here. They weren't confident enough in the gameplay.
I just played like 5 minutes before uninstalling it, the controls are ass.
Kill the house players. Get on the tank. Shoot the orange spot. Get launched across the map. Rinse and repeat. It’s pretty mid…
**GETS BLOWN TF UP** 😂
I feel bad at Rollerdrome. I feel like the controls really hamper the experience.
I also agree that this game is a fancy demo to pitch a more complete version of a real game. I like it, but I wouldn't pay much for it.
This game is so fun
This is a fantastic video
Something I think is funny is that the online multilayer it's advertised as having is still single player lol
I understand this was 3 weeks ago but where was it advertised. I don't think I saw anything advertising multiplayer
@@not_someone9348 part of the description on the PlayStation is if I remember correctly multilayer, or network play. Or online something. Its vague and probably refers to a leader board or something
@@loodlebopa leaderboard function that compares your rankings to other real players requires you and everyone else to be playing online and to have a platform account, therefore it must be advertised as having network play even if there is no matchmaking with other players. It’s less of a false advertising thing and more of a required disclosure thing
So can we pls have our Blade game that is just for skating "Agressive Inline Skates".... I mean other skaters got like 100 Toni Hawk games. What did we got, A shooting game and a rocket league game ... can we pls get a normal Blade Game for just skating.
I enjoyed your video. I have played Rollerdrome. Actually bought the game just before it became a free PS Plus title. Anyway, I found it rather bland. I agree with the points made in your video. I might get the Platinum trophy. Haven't decided yet.
? Really? Because I think it is an awesome game. I"ve had a blast playing it.... to each their own I guess.
What did you say?
This is a very harsh review in my opinion, and that's fine - but some of your criticisms are unfair and basically just not true...
To say the quarter finals level set adds nothing new, and say it seems kinda lazy? That's pretty ridiculous. The quarter finals add two new enemy types (in a game where new enemy types are a big change to player strategies) and a unlock a completely new weapon that also changes things a lot. Also it is where the first boss fight in the game happens.
It seems to me that you were hoping for a more free-roaming skating experience, and were frustrated by the game being an arena shooter at the same time - but that just isn't the game they designed. It's like playing Forza and complaining there's no weapon pickups on the track.
Damn this video is really well made
I feel like alot if this isnt fair. I replayed the first levels dozens and dozens of times trying to refine my time and maximize how many points i got. I still havent gotten the highest ranking
Do as many tricks as you can before the combo meter is down and kill the next enemy. Try and do different tricks as much as you can and keep spinning and doing flips with each trick
I’ve got A so far, but I’m going back again and again until I get it perfected, might not do this for every level but I’m happily spending time on it.
You change your point halfway through. You don't like the criticisms but your only contribution is you replayed levels.
People will have different opinions.
Can you turn off the slow mo? I prefer not having it.
So the mediocre level design was meta commentary all along lol
Ha, yeah. They're kind of a microcosm of the entire game.
Anyone complaining about a great game such as this, is clearly a big whiny baby.
No, anyone who writes your comment is an asinine, little cry baby. People can like or dislike anything they want. You're a coward who can't stand a thing you like being criticized. Grow up. Like the game all you want, but remembers others may not.
"i could not possibly care less"
then why you playin it...???
7:55 very cringe. Stopped watching there. Bad video.
???????? What’s wrong with it
Of all images and narratives he could have chose for what he was talking about, he chose the anti-Whiteness and White-guilt route, which is baseless, propagandized, communist and racist rhetoric. No surprise though, I'm sure he's being brainwashed in his university daily so it's sort of a given.@@cra8zykidg
@@cra8zykidg they prolly got salty cuz hearing different opinions is too triggering
@@DreamTerrorist oof sounds like you stand on the wrong side
As long as I'm not on the side of unhinged grooming anti-White communist loonies, I'm on the right side.@@Inapeeina
I just finished the video and I do agree with some of your points, but I kinda felt like you more didn't like the game and was disappointed more than it's necessarily a bad game. I've played a decent amount of hours into and have enjoyed it.
Whether a game is good or bad is subjective. Of course, it's opinion. I don't know what your point is.
The video is incredibly bad.
Yes it is.
