      Yup, it’s so crazy how recent that is. That’s why when you ask some older women for marriage advice, they say to have money hidden if you ever need to run away. They couldn’t keep their own money and had to give it to their husbands, they’d hide what they could in the kitchen, where the men of the 40’s and 50’s never looked.

      Yes, my grandmother told me to hide an account if I should need it. Women of her generation didn't have control of their money or other property. The wife and children "belonged" to the husband/father. It's crazy to think how this was so recent.

    • @SuburbanSavage
      @SuburbanSavage Před 2 lety +17

      @@sue3317 my parents were unusual for their time because my dad wanted my mom to be in control of their accounts, because she was better at it as she had worked in corporate America, while my dad had spent 25 years in the army, and had zero banking skills. They had joint accounts, but on the rare occasion that the bank would call, they'd ask for my dad, so he'd tell them to speak with his secretary, which was really my mom. They wouldn't talk to my mom, but they'd speak to my dad's "secretary," which was really my mom. So stupid!
      Thankfully the laws changed, but my mom still grumbles about being a fake secretary, just to be able to speak as an equal to the bank in the late 60's.

Obviously his horror work is totally genre-defining, but it feels like it' harder to create really compelling dramas than it is to write scary horror, and the fact that he can write a story that's told in 2 hours where you get really invested in the characters and story and every character is dimensional and layered is incredibly impressive.

    It’s common for kids who are being sexually abused to try and be as unattractive as possible. Thirteen is also a common age for it to start. I followed the red flag handbook myself; terrible UTI’s, GI tract problems, didn’t bathe, smelled bad, greasy hair, bad grades, sneaking out of the house at night to avoid the rape, becoming a scary persona at school so other kids stayed away. I also got fat because my abuser found fat women repulsive. The shame and self hatred is unreal. I love Dolores so much because she defended her daughter. Too many moms and others blame the kid. Nowadays I try to help as many brothers and sisters of circumstance as I can. The girl who played the teenage Selina visited an abused children’s home. One girl told her when her father started in on her, she’d go out of her body like a bird in flight. That’s what Selena was doing in the terrible boat scene. Really important film.

You know you're not normal; you're prone to rages, youre apathetic or indifferent to life in general yet you feel great empathy to the suffering of children or animals; basically innocent, defenseless beings. You are self destructive, you have self identity issues, you know SOMETHING happened you, but you cant articulate it, and even worse, you either genuinely cant implicate someone because you cant remember whose responsible, or you know exactly who the perpetrator is but you cant bring yourself to tell anyone because it will blow everyone's lives apart

  • @williammatthews693

    You don't need to justify Dolores's actions with ""self-defense". If we lived in a "civilized" society things like what happened to Selena wouldn't happen. If a man can abandon civilization like that, then a woman can to and murder itself is justifiable. Glad you guys watched this film. It's heavy but worth it. Kathy Bates should've gotten another Academy Award for this role!

    a Stephen King classic. the book is a little odd with the story telling style being like a police report by Dolores. PS, I still say you should watch Crossroads with Ralph Macchio after watching your reactions to the opening of My Cousin Vinny.

    You guys discussing whether it was murder or self defense... it just highlights why she was the ONE case that detective could not win. She set the trap for Joe to die, but technically she didn't kill him. So how do you prove in a court of law, that she did? You can't... so she got away with it, even though they both knew she did it. That's why the detective was so hell bent on nailing her for Vera's death. She got away once, he was not going to let her get away again. This movie was such a good movie and so well done. The performances were great too.

    Lot of people say that - "if i ever get that way, kill me, i couldn't live that way"... But, take it from someone who's been there, and is still there, you'd be surprised how strong the will to live is even through such misery and pain.
