And they're probably the most individually interesting thing on the kit, toms, snares, and bass drums can be really cool, but in general it's just very minor differences between mid-tier and high tier kits that only really start to matter when your listening for those differences. He's shown you can make complete crap drums work, but crap cymbals just don't, they really have to be a competently made piece of engineering for them to sound any good.

if anyone's wondering, an easy way to stop a crack from spreading on literally anything is to drill a big honkin hole centered right at the end of that crack, so the drill is taking half crack and half healthy material. That should give it enough relief to keep it in one piece until you get to removing the entire damaged bit.

I tricked my boss into letting me work 2nd shift in the machine shop, so sometimes I do fun things with my dead cymbals. Wet grinders are great for getting those cracks out, and then you can hit it with a pencil grinder and finish it up on the buffing wheel or use a cratex buffing wheel on the pencil grinder for small holes. I've also experimented a little with rehammering and turning thicker cymbals down on the lathe.

One fascinating thing about marching crashes is that when they are worn and close to cracking, they’ll start to invert when struck too hard. When a crack would appear, he’d keep playing them until it didn’t sound good, then he broke the cracked portion off and declared them dead. He then used the two broken cymbals to display pictures on at his grad party 😂

been repairing cracked cymbals for ages, my favorite way to do it is a drill press with a hole saw bit made for tiles. basically you can't "cut" holes, you have to "sand" or "wear" the hole/cut the lines. one studio record my old drummer used crack repaired crashes and ride.
middle/throat cracks carefully repaired so as not to lose any edge wash/etc. like reilley's are the absolute best, it basically just changes the length of the note on an already very heavy/short noted part of the cymbal anyway.

I cut about 1/3 off a cheap crash after it split -- thin enough to use decent metal shears for the job then a sanding disc on my drill to tidy it up.
I'm convinced it sounds better now than before!

I've had, and still have, a bunch of pro level cymbals that have been repaired (and I've had a bunch of pro level cymbals that I've tossed out before we knew how to repair them like we do now!) including a 90's era 16" K Dark crash with a big swoopy cut, a 17" Sabian AA Medium Thin crash, also with a big swoopy cut, both of which must have had between a quarter and a third of their total area gone, but still sounded great. I've got an 80's era Zildjian A Medium crash with a little triangle cut that sounds like nothing's changed, and an 18" A China Boy with a radial crack in one of the grooves that I did a slot cut on, and it sounds great! Just as China-ry as it was before, but a bit more trashy (and I think louder too). I wish I could have saved my 17" Z Custom Medium crash, that I drilled to stop a crack and it didn't work so I drilled it twice more (when the crack tree-branched off) and eventually it just lost a chunk that fell off. I loved that cymbal.

My local drum shop sells top of the line cymbals with factory crack repairs for $75 a piece. So far I have bought, a 18in zildjian K dark medium thin crash, a 17in Sabian HHX crash, and a 18in Sabian AAX raw bell medium crash.

There was one cracked cymbal at a drum set at the University near where I live that has a cracked ride cymbal that sounds more like a sizzle cymbal. It's pretty cool.

Reminds me of the cymbal I found while metal detecting. Thought it wasn’t too much when I found it, perhaps a cheap modern one. Turned out to be a 1920s to 1930s Ludwig 10" hi hat. Of course it's all bent up and probably will never be usable again due to metal crystallization, but it's still a cool conversation piece!

I have never played the drums, and probably never will, but I can tell you the best way to stop a crack, drill a hole at either end (or the end if it goes off the edge I guess) and make sure the hole hits the end of the crack, but don't be afraid to take some material out past the end of the crack too, incase there is some cracking there you can't see. Smooth, roung holes and edges are harder for cracks to form. Cut out the rest of the crack and sand/file the edges rounded and smooth. I know from welding cast iron, you get a crack, carefully drill the ends of the crack, grind out a bit of the crack and weld up the whole thing. Nothing like not doing the prep work and suddenly a crack appears eminating from your weld.
