third pipe after the steel wool could be kitty litter. haven't read all the comments so not sure if anyone has suggested it (saw the charcoal suggestion.) but kitty litter would definitely dry it out and is regularly used for filtration in laboratory settings.
silica desicant might be better. Highly effective and reusable.

@@gocryptoyourself2423 Most kitty litter is Diatomost Earth (DE) which is Silica Dioxide, Silica desiccant is Silica Dioxide (SiO2), Both are the same thing just a different name.
@@Norbingel Very unlikely for Silica Dioxide to reach Methane, unless you hold the temperature upwards of 1623 K (1350C or 2462F).
You can bury that tank in compost of leaves and mulch. That compost heat will generate free heat for you... God Bless Everyone.

Just some info to add to your understanding !
The "air" you are purging off is Carbon Dioxide (Co2) and because it is soluble in water (think fizzy lemonade LOL) the bubbler should have more water in it for (perhaps 3/4 or more filled.)
Advantages : (a) A larger contact volume for "scrubbing " (actually absorbing) the C02 more effectively. (b) A smaller volume of vulnerable gas remaining above the water column that could ignite from a flashback. (c)as any flashback cannot penetrate the water column it safely arrests any flame.
You don't want large quantities of gas blowing up and throwing SH** everywhere !!
Also, i think you should have some space above the water level in your IBC tank, and maybe fit a pressure-guage and a relief valve for safety ?
Additionally, the gas contains Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S} so thats what the secondary filtering Iron (steel wool) is there for.
Be careful not to (solar )heat the IBC above around 150 degrees F or you can pasteurise the contents and stifle your gas production.

Great video, I recommend you to put a valve at the top tee gas output in order to close it when needed to do a maintenance to the clear filter.

To increase the percentage of the methane you may try to scrub the CO2 using Ca(OH)2 or NaOH. The bonus point: it should also get rid of the H2S.
With a fairly wide vertical intake tube any methane produced in that tube will just fly upwards and away. Since you are using a plunger already maybe putting the intake at an angle and drilling few holes on the wall facing upwards \ will help.

- how to tell when the liquid fertilizer should be drained?
- how to tell when solids buildup in bottom needs cleaning out.

I havent watch any of your further videos at this point.. however one small upgrade you could make is putting a sight glass (or a clear pipe) in a rise pipe (or the waste pipe) for two reasons..
Reason one : To know the water level and when it's time to refill with bio material and/or water.
Reason two : You can use the water level to check the pressure of the tank/gas by using the starting water level verses your steady state (up and running) level. 1 inch of water equals 0.0360912 psi.. or 28 inches (approx) of water equals 1 psi. Typical Nat Gas appliances run at 3.5 inches.. LP is usually 11 inches or less. I watched in another video bio gas (methane) burns similar to that of Nat Gas.
Another thought relating to that.. you could as use a float (instead of a sight glass) with a rod (say 1 inch in diameter) that would point upwards with inch graduations that would be put into a 2 or 3 inch pipe that would come from the top of the tank that would run to the near bottom as to not let gas escape while still reflecting water level.
A question I have..
Could you draw from a spetic tank? I ask this since.. I have a tank that the caps are exposed. One morning I was on my back deck to see one of the caps had come off. I had thought a friend had played a prank on me. :P I had my father come up and look at it. He explained that the caps don't just come off.. We later learned that the gas in the tank corroded the wires feeding the pump that pumps the waste into the sand mound causing it to ignite.. which immediatley had gotten the gears turning (in my head) about using it as fuel.

The bio gas fill-in station is bad ass
Put a garbage disposal on the feed pipe. Grinding up everything going in with make things break down faster and it will not clog the gas output.
So I'm new to your off grid diy , But I'm curious . I love DIY and would love to see how y'all do things around your homestead. New sub . Thank u for the info . You are very smart.

So glad I found this again! Why not have an overflow valve to prevent total level inside IBC, from clogging the methane outlet? Also, to address the “wet” methane, that is created after the clear filter, you can add an air compressor water separator ($3). 11/10 production!
I have two reactors attached to each of my farm’s toilets.
Please explain what you mean by placing an overflow valve to stop methane outlet for getting blocked. Hasn’t the video shown how to avoid this?

Making a biodigestor does make more gas and co2 as well as other gasses. But your creating a green fuel source and fertilizer as well as clean soil.
Get a carbon dioxide detector, leave a gap of air in the digester. The methane is the lightest gas, you can use the co2 detector to turn a pump on and off to pump out the methane until co2 is left, pump co2 into a greenhouse with plenty of plants.
Very very nice. If you put the water filter on an angle and put tiny holes in the bottom of the pipe. there would be more contact with the bubbles with the water.

been awhile since posted, hope this idea is still relevant. try a fuel/water separator for draining water at the bottom of your steel wool filter. they are built in all models of diesel tractors and they have a built in drain at the bottom of the bowl. could do the same instead of the water filter bowl i guess, but less useful there.

thanks for sharing I have been very interested in this and have yet to build my own biodigester and I find your video very informative.. Im am not sure if this will work for you, maybe you could put a tee instead of the coupling, gas goes sideways and the top part you can cover with a cap that you can open up to push back whatever is clogging the gas outlet pipes if it ever gets clogged.
I'd like to come up with an idea: how about you put a glass or plastic cover over the biodigester to create a greenhouse effect? The heat generated by the ceiling and walls could increase the temperature of the biodigester.
With your steel wool tubes if you put one more tube filled with charcoal you would get absolutely dry gas , that is a suggestion.
I think a 6" thick rigid styrofoam insulated box laminated onto exterior plywood, anodized sheet metal, or HDPE board, held together with suitcase latches would solve your continuous temperature challenge in any climate. Only penetrations through the insulated shell would be your fill pipe, gas pipe out, and scrubber drain The exothermic digestion process is all you will need for heat, the same as your body maintains continuous 98.6 by heat generated from your stomach digestion. You could build in a small window to view your scrubber if you want.
If you add an s trap on the input it could block the gas and smell coming out with holding water the way our indoor drain systems work?
In cold weather climates, you could coat the outside of the container with spray foam insulation. That should prevent heat from escaping and protect against cooler temperatures.
Or you just bottle it up into propane tanks over the summer lol.

Hi, great video. Do you have information on how much material per day your putting in (weight)? And how much gas it produces (how long can you cook with it)?
If you side mount the exit port, the system will not block the gas export line. Saw it on another video. Leaves a gap in the tank top so sludge doesn't build right at the top layer. Leaves a little space for gas accumulation. Saw another video where clay cat litter was used to scrub the gas as well. Cant remember what they were scrubbing? Made sense at the time. Very cool build. 🤙🤡

How often do you have to replace the steel wool? Have you ever tested the gas for the percentage of hydrogen sulfate?
How efficient is it? Are you logging the weight of materials added and volume of gas removed?

You got me thinking, thanks. I'm wondering if you can use a 150 watt solar panel with a DC heating element to increase production. Maybe take a 55 gallon drum of water, and heat it up during the day with solar, run hot water circulation through your bio-digester (input/output), so you can use thermal biomass to increase your production during the day and evening. The thought being that you can hyper produce, so being an actively managed will produce more than passive management.

Another possibility is to have the bulk of the digester underground. That ensues a fairly uniform band of temperature within which the system operates. You could also look at the larger scale setups that rural india has going. They use those to power entire communities with the manure from 100 -150 cows. Cooking gas and power to an entire village.

I saw where someone put a garage disposal to get things put in as small as possible so I it will break down faster.
H2S is important to get rid of because of corusion. But if you want to use your gas for a Generator, you also have to get rid of most of the CO2. one way to do it, is to pressurize the Gas above 60 bar. That is also great for storrage.
hi, isnt it possible to let the waste pipe go out at the sides but very high? like this the gas out let would not get stuck. Or would this idea cause problems? Sorry for my English ;)

As soon as it gets going, it produces its own heat. So just insulating should be enough. Upwards of a certain size, people don't worry about getting it hot. But than you got to start worring about overheating.
Maybe put another tank next to that one for the wast from that tank goes into and maybe make more gas to be sure all is broken down also can put more wast in there. I saw a video where they had 3 or 4 tanks like that each made gas. They had a garbage disposal on the the input and feed it every day enough to keep it all going in all the tanks. The last one didn't make much gas but just got the last of the feed broken down. If you put it in the ground you can feed your sewer in there. Maybe just the human wast, the soap from laundry and cleaning up the house and other things will kill the system. Just some thoughts! Hope they help you.

Rarely but yes, maybe years, it's just literal mud/dirt at that point, right into the garden.
I have a comment on 12:25. If the biogas is not to be utilized it's is better that the residues undergo an aerobic digestion and therefore produce CO2 and water (ad the gaseous products), the methane produced in anaerbic conditions, as you know have a higher Green House Gas potential. However, introducing air in the system would kill almost instantly the methanogens and it would have to pass a lag period before the methanogens restablish again, if you decide to return producing biogas. I would suggest that the biogas be still stored.... (Sorry for my English , I'm Brazilian) my best regards!

The bubbler water has to be changed sometimes, otherwise it does nothing, only so much gas will dissolve in the water. Also a 300 watt solar panel on an 125w aquarium heater will run forever.

I think that water filter and steel wool is not to filter the gas but to prevent it from flashback because I used to work on hydrogen and we used the same thing so that they won't explode
I know what you mean I played with hyd back in the day. But not the case here. it's used to clean the gas
Put half cow dung and half water with around 4/5 kgs of jaggery & 4/5 kgs of gram flour stir it well as this is the food for the bacteria which produces bio gas this would help to get the bio gas very fast hope you would like my suggestion.

there's a way but its expensive and many stages for completion, search for cng compressor, you need to compress and cool it by stages to achieve higher psi without risk of ignitions

Instead of using steel wool, you could use fine bronze wool. That will filter the gas better and is around the same price.

T2s: Do you have more information on that? Most common i have seen is iron (steel wool) to react with the sulfide H2S, to make rust and protect used burners and engines. I´m not convinced bronze is better for that.
Years ago Mother Earth News recommended copper scrub pads or lathe turnings. And; the spent copper could be recovered easily or used as is for other projects.

The water filter is to remove any acid that is building up, and it will.

As long as the tank is not made from metal just wash with soap and triple rinse. Also inert ingredients of glyphosate contain organophosphates.

Yes it’s a bigger scale but looks like the go ive got a bit of land where I am and the farmers have loads of cow dung I’ll definitely look at your pod cast I’m just at the research stages at the moment
Listening about your hole in your bio digester I had a hole in a wood boiler and tried loads to fix it what works is to use two plates and use a 2 part epoxy on both sides and little nut and bolts to compress it together if it’s any help to you 👍

Is there an optimum "blend" of the type of food scraps you use to fees this? In other words, can you put too much of one thing but not enough of another?
The best mix is food and manure it will make lots of gas and brake down the food fast
