fun fact time! your toe stop is actually there for stopping while backwards, (although it doesn't matter if you use it while going forward) and the way to stop while going forward is to drag your back foot horizontally behind you at a very slight angle, if its at too much of an angle you could wear down your wheels unevenly and it would make it hard to skate of course, it doesn't matter how you stop though as long as its not slamming someone else to the floor
When I was learning to skate properly I would sit down and get the basic motion of moving in the skates as well as a rough feel of how the wheels move on the floor. Then I would skate back and forth on the carpet to get the idea of skating, but on a surface that is less likely to make me fall, then I took it to the rink and started skating around just fine. Keep in mind this was in under 2 hours.

I went to a skating rink and raced my friend and while we were making it to the end, I was in the lead and she comes out of nowhere, and then hit my skates. Makes me fall over and I had my lip bleeding. Such a great time.
mannn- at my skating rink, the workers were complete asses to me because i used the wall to hold myself as i was moving. i’d rather just push myself in the middle and get ran over instead 😭
As someone who just recently learned to skate and understands how confusing things can be: squat like you're about to sit down to the point that you feel like you look stupid to train your balance. Take small steps without moving your feet in any way besides up and down, dont try pushing yourself forward but rather leaning your center of gravity in the direction you want to go. Only use your stoppers if you need to stop immediately and don't mind falling (like if you're about to hit someone,) otherwise just angle a foot outward and place it gently to drag behind the foot that is rolling.
