Classic Olympic highlights as Japan women's volleyball team add to the men's bronze with the gold medal in the tournament as the home nation at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games.
This was the first time volleyball had been included in the Olympic programme, and it was keenly anticipated by the home supporters. The Japanese men took bronze, behind the dominant Soviet Union, but the home nation was more focused on Japan's women's volleyball team.
Ten members of the team worked at the same spinning mill near Osaka. The team's coach, Hirofumi Daimatsu, also worked there, where he was in charge of buying office supplies. Such an ordinary exterior hid a man of extraordinary determination.
His training techniques bordered on the extreme. Players were taunted and forced to train almost every day of the year, but Daimatsu also created new tactics that have survived to this day.
He crafted a highly successful team that captured the fascination of the Japanese public. They were expected to win, and to win with style.
They obliged by dropping just one set in the whole tournament, a narrow 15-13 reverse at the hands of Poland. Even then, there was a reason - that set was conceded only after Daimatsu had taken some of his best players off the court in order to frustrate the watching Soviet scouts.
In the final match, the women played the USSR. The Soviet team actually reached the final with a superior record, with four victories and no sets conceded, but the match did not turn out to be the classic that neutrals might have hoped for. Instead, the Japanese were dominant from beginning to end, winning 3-0.
For the home fans, though, it was exactly the result they had hoped for. The women's triumph was watched by 80% of the country on TV.
After the Olympic Games were over, the team's captain, Masae Kasai, met the Prime Minister. She mentioned that she could not meet a prospective husband because of the athletes' strict training regime. He sympathised, set her up on a date with a man named Kazuo Nakamura - and the two went on to marry.

It' s almost incredible how the Japaneses dominated the game, even being half the size and height of the Russians, just a masterpiece of character, tactics and organisation
@@allgoo1990 Oh, completely true!
@@babyelian77 Complete BS! 😂😂
Both the coach and players of Japan retired after winning that gold medal. The coach became a member of the Japanese parliament (and remained until his death ten years later). He never coached any other teams.
Yes and they were all full time factory workers
@@LucienSabre before the Olympics they went on an European tour were they dominated over all the European teams, after that the Japanese Olympic committee asked them to become the national Olympic team. They proved their skills before the Olympics.
@@EdgarOokami Exactly: **before** the Olympics, not _after_ them like it was said. All the players who won olympic gold in 1964 retired and never played again. Same goes for the coach, who never coached any other team….definitely and especially *not* China - whose diplomatic relations with Japan at the time were basically non-existent, no japanese would’ve willingly gone to work for China.
Wow! 1964? First of all, I was not expecting that video quality in that year.

I guess Japanese always had the best camera ahead of everybody else.
The chances are, your camera is Japanese. If it's not made in Japan(only top of the line are made in Japan these days), it's definitely comes with Japanese brand name.

That looks great too but the difference is one is out door slow moving object, another is fast moving object indoor.
You have to have a lens of about 5 stops faster to produce the same quality images in that situation.
If you ever shopped around for the lens you'll know that the difference in the price between 1.4 and 2.8(2stops) of the same focal length will be about 5 times.
I know right? Videos from the 80s looked like they were filmed on potatoes compared to this
@@alexarias5717 not really lol

The quality is better than 2000's videos
This doesn't tell the most interesting part of the story, that the Japanese team were full time factory workers at a textile mill, who played and practiced after work in the dorms. The Soviet women, like many Olympians, didn't have secular jobs and trained every day. The Japanese team all came from poor rural families who had sent them to work and they were tough as nails and determined. They invented several unique serves and saves based on Judo moves that continue to be used. They were viewed as "of the people", to the extent that they think 85 percent of the country watched the match live
And this happened just decades after WW2. Japan is amazing!
Amigo, you do realize the rest of the civilized world also participated in WW2. And Japan was one of the few countries that DIDN'T get invaded, it's infrastructure decimated and civilians slaughtered. Like for instance the team they are playing against.
Uhh the United States bombed Japan pretty hard in the last year or so of WW2
Japan's infrastructure and most of its cities were completely destroyed in WW2, with the death of millions of civilians.
Terangeree this isn't right. Japanese total losses were ~2.5 million "Tokyo 51% destroyed" They didn't even destroy the capital. Japan got off very lightly. If not for the nukes, that's where the real destruction would start.
The city where I met my wide suffered a common fate for Japanese cities. Fukuyama is the second largest city in Hiroshima Prefecture, and, two days after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, 93 USAAF B29 bombers offloaded their incendiary bombs on Fukuyama. The raid lasted less than 90 minutes, totally destroyed 80% of the city and killed more than 70,000.
By way of comparison, the infamous firebombing of Dresden employed 1,203 heavy bombers conducting multiple air raids over two days, with a death toll of around 25,000.
I like the hairstyles and the way they serve!
CZcams is such a time capsule. As a sports enthusiast it is fascinating to be able to discover so many talented athletes and teams and see their memorable moments. Also, it has to be asked. Why did olympic uniforms look so much cooler than today's? They were simple yet iconic. Now some are full of brands and stuff...
you can also see how sports developed, volleyball women are so much more atheltic now than in this clip
My feet hurt just by looking at their shoes, we've come a long way baby.
Proud with Japan..admire their hardwork
The coverage of this game was great. The filming quality and angles is great! Can't believe this was almost 60yrs ago.
To the person who filmed this with a telephoto from 5 meters away, great job.
That music at the end...............sounds like Godzilla has descended upon the Yoyogi Gymnasium!
Lol! I am totally dead laughing!
Kelly Jay OMG
what you hear is the oldest anthem in there world "Kimigayo"
hahaha so truee
I was too young to remember the 64 games, but the 68 games, I watched my aunt cry in despair when the Soviets won the Gold in 68 over the Japanese. She fell on the floor and was inconsolable.
Japan always best
Years ago I watched a documentary about this team and the brutal training they endured to prepare for the task of representing their nation as hosts.
Yea I think I watched that one too, makes me feel sad.. :{
Elijah Robinson Where can I find it?
Junior Vieira Saraiva I wish I could tell you but I just saw it years ago on tv and don't remember the name of it anymore, maybe the other guy can help you.
I can give you a short summary in what I remembered if it though: I remember they said they didn't have free days, they couldn't have boyfriends or any relationships, they were always in the same building training from day to night like prisoners, they didn't eat almost anything just a banana as meal or something like that for example, they were being molested, their hairs were cut and they were not allowed to look pretty, they were basically volleybal robot slaves. There is more but I don't remember it anymore it was very sad though.
Alaturka I can imagine the hard times these girls when through. Happily everything has changed, they are now international superstars. I mean they still work hard to achieve their goals but with the treatment they deserve as human beings and profesional athletes.
@@aysun8392 that's still the process of Japanese training today. Maybe a little relaxed but still as compounded.
Super Epic! My great respect to Japan.
Funny thing, this victory inspired a woman, Chikako Urano, to write a manga, Attack No.1, who was later turned into anime, and pretty much started with other sports manga directed to girls
Exactly! In Germany it's called Mila Superstar 😊
@@Skiad-OpsGash this match must be fake there is no balloon and no whirlwind attack

Actually he was holding his tears.
That was the only goal he had, to prove his method works. And he did it while the whole world is watching.
Yes, many times, showing off the dental arch does not mean being truly happy. The coach's expression can hide a flood of emotions ... This victory means a lot to him, much more than we can imagine.
That Coach is Hirofumi Daimatsu
..See his history and you understand why to do that if even win the Olympic gold medal
they had to wipe their own floor lol
Now we have little useless children who do that :)

In the 1964 Olympics, the tournament was played in a single round-robin format. All teams were placed into a single pool and faced each other once. Japan won all 5 matches and lost only one set to Poland among all those matches.
Final positions:
🥇 Japan
🥈 Soviet Union
🥉 Poland
4. Romania
5. United States of America
6. South Korea
Does anybody remember an NBC Olympics TV segment, narrated by Hannah Storm, where they talked about the coach, and the 1964 win? Here is what I distinctly remember: Hannah ended the segment, saying about the coach, that "He would go on to win a second gold medal for Japan, in 1976." Very heart-warming.
This was awesome! Japan still rules in 2016!
What's with the Godfather music immediately after Japan won?
It’s the national anthem

That Japanese serve is iconic. I wish I could see Boskovic or Egonu serve like that :P
I hope Olympics uploads the whole match with the same quality.
The real Mila Superstar - and of course Midori Hayakawa (left handed) served the winning ball ;-)

Japan is waiting to make history again at the Tokyo Olympic
The Soviet team had their spirit absolutely crushed; you can notice that they had lost way before they had actually lost.
Their morale was absolutely devastated.
Japanese deserve to win in this Olympic
They might, but they have to be taller
What's with the sad dramatic music at the end? It almost makes it sound like they lost

Why does the Japanese coach look so unhappy after his team won?
Japanese coaches are not likely to be unhappy. He thinks of a female athlete who has endured severe practice so far and thinks that he is enduring shedding tears
The company and coach had been accused of abusing female employees.
After finishing their factory jobs, they were forced to train more than professional athletes.
In return, the company promised to find marriage partners for its female employees.
However, the company did not seriously try to keep its promises.
The coach had to resign from a company that didn't keep his promises and negotiate with the prime minister to find a marriage partner for the player.
0:58 these technic of serve is a bit weird compare to this era
