NEWSTEAD 2024
Newstead is a rural township on the Pyrenees Highway, 15 km south-west of Castlemaine and 110 km north-west of Melbourne. It is also on the Loddon River, south of where the river enters the Cairn Curran Reservoir. The Newstead shire (1865-1995), of 409 sq km, was generally south and west of Castlemaine.
Although situated in the goldfields region, Newstead did not have particularly rich fields to attract rushes of miners. It grew from being a crossing place on the Loddon River, often for miners travelling to the Castlemaine and Mount Alexander diggings. A hotel was built near the crossing in 1853 and its name, Newstead, was given to the future township.
A flour mill was built in 1856. In 1859 a National school and a Presbyterian church were opened, and in 1863 Baptist, Anglican and Methodist churches were opened. Newstead had mostly a farming population, which formed an agricultural society in 1860. By the mid-1860s there were also a brewery, a biscuit factory and two hotels. A three-storey bluestone flour mill was built in 1869, continuing until 1914. It was repaired in the 1970s. In 1868 a mechanics’ institute was opened, and mining re-commenced at Green Gully, about 2 km east of Newstead, in the 1870s. Mining was also carried out at Sandon, Strangways and Welshmans Reef, all within about 5 km of Newstead. A railway line from Castlemaine to Maryborough, via Newstead, was opened in 1874.

Wow this was a nice tour all of the buildings were so little from the churches, butchers shops and even the school was small. They were all so unique to look at and it was nice to see so mamy of them still standing and they were still working on them. That Ginger sponge cake looked good but Peter didn't say much it must have not been as good as moms. Then what a cute little pie you grabbed. Thanks for sharing this adorable walk!❤
That bloody little Apple cake was stale. The Ginger fluff sponge was great, a little more ginger to give it a bit more kick would have been lovely, otherwise it was thumbs up from me. It was great exploring Newstead's historical buildings. Hope you are both well. 👍🏼🤠🙏🏼♥️

Jojo wasn't disappointed, however Peter was and had to go and get his little apple pie, which happed to be stale. The Ginger Fluff was freshly baked. Peter's eyes are bigger than his stomach and has a sweet tooth!

Hello JoJo ,Peter ruby and coco! What a lovely video. This was really enjoyed walking around Newstead with you. Had no idea that it was such an active little town of one ago. For that business to closing 1981 that doesn’t seem very long ago to me, although to be honest, it’s six years of 50 years isn’t it or seven years of 50 years isn’t it! The ginger fluff looked lovely but I agree with Peter. The cake looked a bit small. But yummmmmmm any way. Thank you darlings. Lots of love from Ballarat god bless 💕😘🙏
Cocoa is my Aunt Mary's dog who we were looking after for a week and a half whilst she was on vacation in Queensland.
it certainly was an active little town, there seems enough people to support the local IGA and cafe.
The Ginger fluff was delicious, but those little apple pies were stale. 🥹

Always interested with spotting connections with us in the UK. We live a few miles from Newstead in Nottinghamshire which is adjacent to Newstead Abbey the former home of Lord Byron. Great too spotting the Mechanics Institute as I (Robert) managed the Nottingham Mechanics for 33 years prior to my retirement. More cake! Not heard of a Ginger Fluff before. Sounds good though. Best wishes once more guys.

We enjoyed joining you virtually for this heritage walk through Newstead. Another Annis and George horse trough. Are these used for anything now? I think it is cool that they have been preserved. But I don't see many horses walking the streets in your videos. So are they just sitting there empty? It was very nice of the lady to open up that Methodist church for you while it is being renovated. The stained glass and wooden vaulted ceiling looks nice. Looks like some work needs to be done on the seating arrangement though. Thanks for sharing this walk with us!

No the troughs are no longer really used for anything but historical monuments, although some troughs have been transferred into planting pots.
