- Mordechai Hershman (1888-1940)
Mordecai Hershman was born in Chernigov and from an early age was an active participant in several synagogue choirs. His first post was as a hazzan in Zhitomir, but stayed there only a few months before he was offered a position as hazzan of Vilna. During World War I, Hershman was drafted into the Russian army, but it is said that his officer was so impressed by his tenor voice that he released him from duty so that he could return to his community in Vilna. After the war, Hershman toured extensively throughout Russia and Europe, performing at synagogues and as a soloist with local orchestras. In 1920, he emigrated to the United States where he was took a position as chief hazzan at the Beth El Temple in Brooklyn, New York. During his time at Beth El Temple, he continued to tour throughout America, Europe and Palestine. As was customary of noted hazzanim of the time, Hershman released several records of cantorial and Jewish folk music. - Hudba
Beautiful and so moving. My non-Jewish family benefited from the kindness of the Jewish population in London. My grandmother said they would have starved if it hadn't been for the Jews in North London. God bless them.
An old favourite.
Cantor Mordechai Hershman is my favorite sings Eilu Devurim
Simple, elegant and, eloquent vocalism with an easy delivery throughout the entire vocal range. Hershman's voice may very likely be the most beautiful voice of chazzonim throughout the ages.
pure gold.
Your name is really argaman
So cool
Stunningly profound. Inspiration devotion.. Thanks to poster. Blessings.
My favorite chazunus piece....we all sang it in shul today after the kiddush in shul....led by an 87 yr old man !!! (Ahavas Chesed Shul in Chicago, IL)
David Argaman shgEtj
Yes, Reb Dovid. Pure gold. His delivery throughout matches the emotional track of the lyrics, and brings out their teaching. It's a heart journey each time. Thank you for posting.
Uwielbiam to wykonanie:)Piękne i poruszające!Nie ma się ochoty przestać tego słuchać:)
"These are duties whose worth cannot be measured:
Honoring one’s father and mother,
Acts of love and kindness
Diligent pursuit of knowledge and wisdom,
Hospitality to strangers,
Visiting the sick,
Celebrating with bride and groom,
Praying with sincerity,
Consoling the bereaved,
Making peace where there is strife,
And the study of Torah leads to them all."

Thank you. Means so much to me, although I am not Jewish.
I guess what you posted is a translation. Thank you very much. The original is in Hebrew or Aramaic?
Not the hottest translation, but it's from the Hebrew.
Better translation, un-neutered of religious content:
"These are the things which have no limits:
The [tithe of the] corner of the field (i.e., you may consider the "corner" for the poor as small or large as you choose);
And the first fruits (i.e., you may bring one or two fruits, or as many as you wish);
And the Pilgrimage sacrifices (1 or many);
And acts of lovingkindness (1 a day or many);
And the study of Torah (i.e., you must learn daily, but it can be one saying, or full-day study).
These are the things which a person eats their Fruits ("Interest Payments") in This World,
Yet the Principal remains intact for him for the Next World:
Honoring Father & Mother, and acts of lovingkindness,
And arriving early to the Study Hall (i.e., for prayer & study) morning & evening,
And welcoming guests, and visiting the sick,
And bringing the bride to the canopy (i.e., making it possible for her to get married in dignity),
And escorting the dead [to their final resting place], and full concentration on the prayers,
And bringing peace between a man and their fellow man, and between a man and his wife -
And the study of Torah stands opposite all of these. (Generally understood to mean, has value equal to any of these, partially because [as the previous translation stated] it brings to kind acts, and partly because studying G-d's Word is beneficial to the world and is an equal kindness to these specific, direct acts of kindness,)

Such vocal purity !
Your comment is pin-pointedly accurate. The recording without orchestra and choir is even more impressive.
Vey, what a voice...Thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, SURELY ONE OF HIS GREATEST RECORDINGS, SUBLIMELY SPIRITUAL - WHO REMASTERED THIS RECORDING - IT SOUNDS BINAURAL!!?? IS THIS POSSIBLE???
Hauntingly beautiful!
Wonderful Chazan
From Mandaluyong. Philippines
The old Cantor's are the best ✡️
wonderful
Wonderful..
Thanks.Wonderfull!!!
Amen !
EXCELLENT.
It should be mentioned that the text about Hershman's life, as short as it regrettably is, is a straight lift from WIKIPEDIA
piękne - wzruszające - dziękuję
excellent
Bardzo dobre wykonanie:)
Cudowne wykonanie:)
Gracias es agua en el desierto

WOW
asucar te hace caer las lagrimas
great voice,to me all cantors have great voices,we should not distinguish between them,we love them all,it is a deservice to criticise or fame one over the other ,they are our chazanim and we love them all
Are you a Cantor, perchance?
fantastique
That's the word I was looking for. But the original recording was sans Orchestre and choir - much more impressive.
@vintagepa, actually this is new technology by Dr. Morderchai Sobol which combines the original voice of the chazan with a modern choir and music.
None better!

Excellent piece. I can't believe how clear it is. When was this made?
CUDOWNE!!
He died at the very early age of 53 in 1940.
Who composed this song Hershman or Tucker?
Hi, someone can help me ? I´m trying to find which cantor sings Hashkiveinu in the movie "Enemies a love story" directed by Paul Mazursky. The credits are misleading, there is a mistake ;so no way I could identify the cantor of this piece. Thanks for helping me finding who sings the Hashkiveinu in this movie.
una cosa de locos
is Herchman similar to Herzman?
Hershman is wonderful. But why does Sobol have the choir singing with a different (Ivrit) pronunctiation of the Hebrew than the Chazan. It spoils it.

lovely ... BUT PINCHIK IS INFINITLY BETTER ;;; THIS IS TOO EMPHATIC .... OVER DRAMATIC ...
I think they both have a certain similarity, maybe it is the sweetness in their voices.
Thanks.Wonderfull!!!
