    lets explore one of the most influential armour weathering styles to emerge in recent years.
    Probably the antonym style to "realistic" weathering. Color modulation pushes hard contrasts to create visual interest!
    In this second video -- we complete the steps that I first saw in the Adam Wilder produced by Mig Jimenez DVD ... FAQ "The Modulation Style"
    So is this highly contrasting style still relevant today? Do you like it or loathe it?
    We conclude the weathering and critique the style and end result !

    Excellent video, very balanced discussion and good articulation of pros and cons. Would like to see more of these, comparing different techniques and how they affect the overall end result.

    My experience of 22 years in the military has told me that most modelers have never seen a real battle used vehicle. After my tours in Afghanistan I still remember oiling hinges on our vehicles so that they didn't make noise as we switched to foot patrol or arrived on the objective. We generally did everything we could to make our vehicles as safe, comfortable and presentable. Mainly the vehicle will save your life. I had the privilege to present photos to the awards board that showed our vehicle had taken quite a bit of fire and showed that the enemy was going for weaknesses in the humvee and that this technical proficiency showed that we seriously misunderstood the taliban's level of knowledge. Leaders disagreed, until I showed them photos of 20+ vehicles hit the same way. After that I was reassigned and my report was buried in a huge catalog system. The name of my report had been changed and even the report number.
    On the modeling front, why do people put chips behind the hinges on hatches? Who do they think is going back there enough to wear the finish?

    Very good both in the information and the illustrated painting etc.
    As someone who's got back into modelling after 20 years all of your video suggestions at the end of this one would be most welcome. Top channel, cheers

      thanks again ! Im going to cover some other methods sort of aimed at beginner, intermediate modellers just covering some straight forward techniques for weathering... also will use plain English terms for what describing the process .. so nothing like "rendering" "modulation" etc.

    I like to use color modulation for my small 1/100 scale wargaming tanks because it makes them pop and you need more contrast to make it seem look real. On large tanks I would also do it but do panel modulation and maybe more muted to still get the effect but not make it seem unreal. Yours look really great though, I think the choice of how light or dark you wanna get is up to each own preference.

    • @TheBearScaleModels
      @TheBearScaleModels  Před 2 lety

      the technique you describe ... shading different panels is a normal technique and why they call everything "color modulation?" is just a buzzword that seems to get used for every type non single colour painted style of painting. Its a shame really as it just confuses most modellers. I will talk about it in forthcoming videos in particular a video that will be aimed at helping beginners.

      @@TheBearScaleModels Yeah sorry it is not panel modulation but more panel lighting. In general I would just do more specific highlighting then just one whole surface with one color. For my 1/100 wargame tanks I do the techniques that heresybrush does in his book on painting small scale wargaming. Because the size is smaller you are picking a surface to do the modulation on because small parts are more difficult.

    Thanks for making this video. I like color modulated models, I just suck at the technique. I think I’m too scared to make the colors really contrast. Who knows? This makes me want to try it again on a RMF T34 I’m building. Take care Bear!

    I am not a rivet counter but I do like some realism. The comparison of the three models at the end was great in showing the pros and cons of the technique. To me the ones on the outside look more realistic and make the centre one look like it was used in a hippy psychedelic war film from the 60s or 70s. Loved the weathering but the original high contrast scheme was too harsh for my taste.

      @TheBearScaleModels  Před 2 lety

      absolutely welcome that you share your opinion it's not rivet counting to me ! glad I undertook this exercise and will work towards presenting my own methods in the future that lean towards a more realistic end result.

      @@TheBearScaleModels I think you have slightly misunderstood what I meant in my previous comment. It was not a criticism of your work. You did a great job showing what this technique produces, and your comparison with the other models at the end confirmed to me that this technique in its purest form is not to my taste. The rivet counter comment was because I meant that I like my models to look about right OOB perhaps with a bit of PE added.I am not like others who rebuild half a vehicle because things are slightly out of scale or slightly the wrong shape.

      @@simonworrall7950 AHH got you... yes i am the same very rarely if at all will i chase kit corrections ..simply dont have the time to research every aspect. I think honestly speaking the CM style it will not be to 90% of peoples tastes. Our brains have stored how things appear in the real world ... when we see something like "CM" style its fake its trying to fool us that this is a realistic interpretation. The only person I have come across that speaks honestly about this technique is Miguel Jimenez where he fully acknowledges that it does not even try to convey the colours, shadows etc of a real AFV he calls it what it is "fantasy". BUT fantasy can be fun !

    Уже 7 лет крашу с цветовой модуляцией и поймал себя на мысли, что она просто надоела. Вроде модель контрастная, всё выделено, заметно, а реалистичности нет. Более того такая техника теперь отпугивает многих новичков от моделизма...большинство не имеют такого видения художника.

    To me nothing is worse than a model that's too dark..or the colours are faded out
