  • This video includes general tips for replacement of rear differential bearings and components in Chevrolet and GMC trucks. This is not a complete unit repair video but simply highlights certain aspects of repairs related to this drivetrain component. This vehicle has a failure of the inner pinion bearing resulting in a jet engine type roar while driving. The failed bearing produced metal particles which warranted replacement of all differential bearings. Watch this video for more information. Thanks!

I owe you a good steak. I enjoy your vids. You have a relaxed tone and approach that helps remove some of the anxiousness in taking on some of these repairs. Thanks again. (The vid of yours that really helped me was on a Subaru. This one is helping with my 1994 Suburban - sometimes, you just need an old truck. Thanks again!

An effective field repair (or back yard) method of checking lash can be performed by installing rung & pinion visually close, then feed a strip of paper between the ring & pinion while rotating them. The paper will be marked by the oil on the gears, and the gear patterns will be clearly visible when lash is close.
If the paper jams up & impairs turning of gears, lash is too tight.
If there is not a clear inprint of gear teeth on both sides of paper and paper does not come out creased & folded, lash is too loose.
When the pattern marking is well defined and the gears starts creasing & just start slicing the paper, lash is close enough for G80 work, and you can go down the without damaging the ring & pinion.
Always replace old pinion bearing with the same brand. For example, Timken with Timken.

I had to change the fuel pump on mine years ago and at that time noticed the spare all covered in road crud and rusting etc. that cheesy wind down crank was beginning to jam up. I thought to myself that it would actually be better to not have a spare at all since you would never get that out in a ditch on a dark road with a flat tire. I pulled the wheel and silly mechanism out and it lives in the corner of my garage ever since. So glad it isn’t there when I go to service the diff or brakelines etc.

I have an 03 safari van with AWD , first year of safari or astro with six lug axles and rear disk brakes. I think its the same 3/4 ton axle used in the GM trucks? It starts to make a faint dry bearing kind of noise above about 25 mph but its not to bad , until you let off the gas and coast or slow down . Then it's a louder dry scrap , scrap , scrap kind of noise. All new brake rotors calipers , u joints , rear axle lube . I am thinking an axle bearing ? How can I tell if it's an axle or carrier or pinion bearing ? It's not a bad seal because it's not leaking anything .

  • @siaripop7

Does a 1/2 ton 99 silverado have a crush sleeve to adjust the pinion and are there some type of retainers in the differential case that hold the axle from sliding out?
The forward moving grind can now be heard at very slow movement which sort of pulses and several times per each rotation of the rear tire. So I am thinking at this point it could be a pinion bearing fail.

  • @Letsroll000

I have a 2000 Z71 that I started getting a surging rubbing noise sound coming come from the differential. I just changed the Ujoints and the axle bearings trying to correct the problem and the noise is still there. (They needed changed anyway and the seals were leaking a little so not wasted time)
The sound is consistent with speed and is only noticeable from about 0-30 mph. Above that I think it blends in with road noise or the surging becomes one sound and it's not very noticeable. But below 30 it is to the point you can hear it outside the truck.
Have never setup a rear diff so I'm in uncharted territory. Not afraid to tackle it but can I change pinion bearing and race along with main carrier bearings without checking backlash or pinion depth or pattern?
Hitting the brakes doesn't change the sound except for slowing the surging down consistent with the speed. Also turning left or right doesn't affect the sound so I'm assuming pinion bearing or carrier bearings?
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

never tackled a diff before but my dads silverado has a noisey pinion bearing and figure i should just do all the bearings, if i simply put the shims in the same spots and preload the pinion corectly i should be ok?

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 7 lety

front or rear? The front independent diffs have problems with the lock rings breaking and side bearings coming loose. but the year is pretty straight forward and yes, if you get the shims back the same it should be perfect...but never hurts to run some indicator around and be sure.

rear no issues with it minus the pinion whineing when you let into the throttle hopefully there is no carnage when i get in there

Maybe wheel bearings or internal of the differential I suppose. Hope you get it figured out

did you figure the noise out yet? I have the same problem and its pretty loud at this point. Im thinking it has something to do with the inside workings of my differential. The differential was low on oil so i filled it bu the noise is still there

How do I know it's a rear bearing? I have this clanking noise when I drive on my driver rear (02 Suburban). Went from when I hit a bump to almost constant now.

I have a loud similar noise on my 01 Tahoe! It doesn't drivedifferently, but it makes the noise.

Daniel McDaniels look in the glove box for the Factory RPO codes there's a sticker in there it's in alphabetical order go down to where the G's are should say g80 if it came with the government lock , other g codes will indicate factory gear ratio such as gt4 3.73, gu6 3.42, gt5 4.11 and so on.

Gregory Johnson white lithium is a smoothe grease that works well for moisture and heat and doesnt get as stiff in cold weather. There should be an good description of it in Wikipedia!

Video says differential bearing but you didnt show us the work you did on a diif bearing. Honestly just frustrating that i watched u do nothing to do with a bearing. U just put it back together and stood in the way of the camera.
