9월과 10월에 독일군와 오스트리아-헝가리군은 협동 작전은 펴 남부 폴란드와 갈리시아에서 광역에 걸친 반격을 시도했다. 그때는 러시아도 이미 동원을 마쳐 총병력 130만에 이르는 7개 군으로 두터운 전선을 형성하고 있었다. 격렬한 전투에도 불구하고 그 방어선은 대체로 유지되었으나 자재 손실, 부족한 실탄의 소모, 그리고 전투 경험이 있는 장교들의 전사(戰死)로 입은 타격은 러시아군이 독일군보다 더 컸다.

The Eastern Front or Eastern Theater of World War I (German: Ostfront, Russian: Восточный фронт, Vostochnıy front) was a theater of operations that encompassed at its greatest extent the entire frontier between the Russian Empire and Romania on one side and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire and the German Empire on the other. It stretched from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south, involved most of Eastern Europe and stretched deep into Central Europe as well. Would these guys be able to held off the cavalry if non of the men ran? They have repeating rifles and could pretty much pick off the rider with swords and spear.
Definitely, I think. The riders might be a bit difficult since they are moving quickly and quite small but the horse itself is prime target.
Well they know how to throwing their lance/spear so pretty much you're still dead anyways, and they're outnumbered as well.
The riders also had rifles.
The cossacks were the most terrifying units for any of the Russias enemy. Even Napoleon aspired and acknowledged them. Why? Simply because they bring fear, and easily vanish in the shadows and come back with guerilla tactics, you couldn't simply walk into a forest alone or you'd get slaughtered by them, and I think the Austrian soldiers feared them to a certain extent.

Hungarians, and Croatians who were part of the "Hungarian" half of the empire, had "Austrian knots" on the front of their breeches, which were somewhat tighter-fitting than the Austrian ones. There were other differences but that was the main one.
ALL "Chircassian" (Caucasian) units in Russian Imperial Army had uniforms. Absolute BS.
Plus no one leaves good boots, pants,coats and guns behind.

The Austro-Hungarian coats are completely wrong, they look like WW2 german ones
They look like the field-grey ones gradually adopted in 1915 and increasingly common as the war went on. The blue-grey ones of 1914 were considered unsuitable for the Eastern Front and slowly replaced. A famous early colour photo of A-H prisoners in Russia taken in 1915 shows POWs wearing both colours. The field-grey uniforms made them resemble German troops more than they had at the start of the war.

Bloody rot. Cavalry by WWI fought dismounted where at all possible. Rifles, not swords - bullets go a bit faster than horses...
Maybe in western front - in eastern, where war was far not so static, there was many mounted fight. Even as late as in 1920 there was a big horseback battle between big units of Bolsheviks and Poles. There were then horse charges of whole regiments and and brigades.

Short-range ones, yes. In fact forests were good hiding-places for cavalry. In WW2 they sometimes used the cover of forests to attack small infantry units or individuals. One German who survived such an attack in 1941 by Soviet cavalry wrote he had seen two men killed with sabres next to him ("80 years after Sadowa" - a 19th century victory by Prussians over Austrians).

After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Galicia's territory was controlled by the Poles. Some of the Caucasian warriors stayed in the area and assimilated. Charge of Rokitna 1915 (Poles), charge of Beersheba 1917 (Aussies). Not mentioning Budyonny's Horsearmy (Bolsheviks) and its role in forcing Polish infantry to retreat from Kiev. (n.b. this Soviet horde finally lost the battle of Komarów 1920 crushed by polish cavalry in last large cavalry-only battle )
