  • Today‪@WorkingHorsesWithJim‬, I saw some lumber with the sawmill for the wall on the barn that we are repairing by putting up board & batten siding. At the end of the video we give an update on Earl, our Suffolk draft horse colt, that has a tumor.
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    It must feel really good to be able to make your own 2x material and not have to go and pay the crazy prices at a lumber yard.
    I think if you saw the prices at the lumber yard you would run that saw mill day and night making 2x material.

    I had a feeling he was getting up close to 900. I figured he was going to fool you. He also had one foot off on the frame, so he might even be heavier than the weight you got. What a good boy he is getting to be. He just got right on there and stood quietly. I'm so glad to see your barn repaired. If I had the farm to go back to, I think a lumbermill would be one of my primary purchases. It is so expensive to buy lumber to repair anything, but if you have a lumbermill, you can keep everything in good repair.
    On the standing stalls, that was what I found too. Our ancestors were not stupid when they kept horses in standing stalls most of the time. I found that a horse kept in a standing stall from a young age simply knows how to back, but a horse kept in box stalls has to be taught to back, and it can be an arduous process. They also are quite used to standing next to a team mate, to making small adjustments to allow someone to move around them, and to standing quietly.

      WoodMizer makes the blades and we send them there to be sharpened. We will try to film the surgery. The siding was red pine. Thanks for watching

    Hi Jim, nice video. One question on your barn: did you put the pals directly into the soil? I guess they become rotten very quickly

    Nice job on the siding. I've been a carpenter my whole life, but could never hammer that fast!! When you refer to 2x8's, is it the actual 2" x 8", or the modern 1 1/2" x 7 1/4"?

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  Před 3 lety +1

      I wish I could actually hammer that well myself! Yes, they are the true dimensions, not the modern

    What was Earl's weight? What is the average weight for a full grown horse (2 or 3 years old?)? Duke and Earl just may be the future team of "Working horses with Jim"!

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  Před 3 lety

      640 up to 840- actually, they won't be full grown until they are 5-6. Not sure what they will weigh, will tell you then. We will just have to wait and see what the future brings, hope so!

    Won't you need to keep a gap (or door) in the side of the barn to get all the sawdust out? Earl is doing so good he was very patient on the scales

    How long roughy in your area would it take for them boards to dry enough to nail the other side of the batten?

    @johnbaskett2309 Před 3 lety

    Hey Jim, do you orient the boards for potential cupping? If so, what's best, cup in or cup out?

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  Před 3 lety

      Probably cup out, but I don't worry about it, I just slap them on. I'm not that good of a carpenter

      @@WorkingHorsesWithJim I'm milling my own board and batten and installing them green for a shop I'm building. Have never attempted this before. I'm thinking of installing the boards so the edges bow out, letting the battens seal well to the boards as the boards dry. Thanks for the reply.
