- Sewing away from home this week but I have made the Friday Pattern Co - Donny Shirt and also created a bag using my Husband's old Jean leg and some scraps!

The fabric is perfect for the Donny shirt and the results are great - isn't it wonderful that we can get feedback from all around the world as to how things might fit, so that you knew to size down? Internet magic! The bag turned out really well, too, and I cannot imagine how much fun you are going to have at the Beyond The Pink Door store in person with Adam!
Visiting the store was just great fun and to see all those wonderful fabrics in person was a dream!
I am so glad the Donny shirt worked out and yes, without all the advice I had been given it could have been a very different story. Isn't the sewing community across the world just amazing?

Your new shirt would be great with a denim, navy or beige skirt, too. Skirts and dresses are so much cooler in sweltering hot summer weather. You could make a small zipper bag for keeping small items organized inside your new bag. I love making those in the hoop, too.

I had to look up Dorcet and it’s lovely. I would love to see England someday and explore the countryside. I stay away from big cities. Cornwall especially since watching Poldark ❤ and Doc Martin. Poldark…oh to see him out on the cliffs or the beach. 😂
The New Look top is my most used pattern. It’s a perfect top in my humble opinion. I have hacked it and used it to refashion men’s shirts. I love the all in one facing. You can sew up the back seam, no need for the slit to get it over your head. Saves a bit of time.
Thanks so much for watching and your comment. Dorset is indeed a wonderful area of the South Coast and we have no big Cities here! I know what you mean about them, give me the countryside any day. I have made the New Look top several times before but I have made a mistake in sizing up this time as I tried on my previous versions and they felt tight. It is now too big around the shoulders etc so I will have to scale it down again, very annoying! You are correct though, it really is a pattern with many uses. 😊🧵

Oh I have slipped up badly on the New Look top and sized up for some reason. I tried on my previous versions and they felt tight so made the next size. Now I have to take it apart and make it smaller 😢.

Your Donny shirt came out very nice. It seems to be a popular and flattering pattern for everyone. Cute patchwork bag! I like the denim bottom, as it grounds the patchwork. Great way to use pretty scraps. My mom was an avid quilter and I inherited her scrap stash. I enjoy puttering with small patchwork projects. Can you see your fabulous view from your sewing machine? How strange you are going to do jeans upcycling this time in your series. I remember Katie made a bag out of jeans when she was at school and then decorated them. Why she never took up sewing is beyond me and very disappointing! 🤣. Can't wait to see your versions.

Really love the print of your shirt., Carole. Very effective. Your bag was a great use of scraps too. I’m a stickler for punctuation- even in phone messages. Maybe I’m old fashioned but it does make a difference. Lovely views from your holiday home.
Oh punctuation in phone messages is something that drives me crazy as my daughter never uses any 🤣. To annoy her I then read it back to her without any breathing spaces just to make her realise that it just doesn't make sense without a comma or full stop. Sounds like we are both the same, old fashioned it may be but it is correct!

The reason I did so much sewing was something I forgot to mention. The Euros (football matches) are on and my husband was watching them every night! I didn't mind though as I could sew on holiday without him moaning at me 🤣. Thanks for watching 😊🧵

What a gorgeous view. Both projects came out great. Love the Donny. I totally agree about the punctuation problem. It can make such a difference and yet very little attention is paid to it anymore. A meet up with Adam and a visit to Beyond the Pink Door! Have the best time.

People are using punctuation less and less these days, my daughter never uses it and it drives me crazy. My son however is amazing at Grammar, he is my 'go to' person when I need advice!

I worked for 2 years in a quilt shop (until COVID lockdown) and I started learning about quilting there - I have only sewn garments & costumes. The other ladies there quilted all the time & made beautiful quilts but every time I picked colors out they were never like the colors the other ladies picked out! I still laugh when think about it 😂 So far I have only made 1 quilt topper but haven't added the batting or backing. It sits in my UFO basket...
The view is stunning and yes finally great weather 👍 the top is fab and love that type of style. Have to say I notice a lot of people are going into bag making but love the idea of being able to use up small pieces of fabric for your bag. I’m so jealous you went to beyond the pink door fabric shop 🤦♀️ look forward to seeing what you purchased next week 😊
Oh we have longed for Summer and it is finally here! There does seem to be a lot of bag making going on at the moment like you say. I just love finding projects that use up scraps.

Yay!! I knew you’d like this pattern. I made mine from a very light liberty lawn and love it. I also slip-stitched the V-neck closed. The fabric looks great!

Donny is on my list - I'm late to the party as well! I have the pattern all printed A0 and ready to go, but not sure what fabric to use yet from my moderate stash. Love your Donny fabric. I think I have something drapey. I also watch Thuy Sewing sometimes - they do some very interesting techniques. Don't get me started on grammar and punctuation! I used to be a proofreader and I cringe at some of the things I read, including some pattern instructions!

The pattern is sold out on the Friday Pattern Company's website! Obviously, a popular pattern. Like your Thuy bag (pronounced Twee). I just may have to give that bag a try at some point. The Donny shirt looks great. I really like that pattern but am trying not to buy more patterns. I looked through my very large pattern collection and found a similar one. I then looked at all my fabrics and found a lovely pink almost Hawaiian print to use. I think if i owner your holiday home I would never want to leave! Enjoy the shopping trip with Adam to BTPD. Hello Carol just love your channel, and your shirt is fabulous. I made my first Donnay shirt yesterday in a Liberty lawn and whilst I like the pattern very much I think like you and others say a drapey fabric is better. Mine feels a bit sticky outie . However another viewer commented that she liked hers in Liberty lawn so it’s all down to preferences. Have a great holiday x☀️☀️

I don't make anything in Cotton Lawn as although it is beautiful, I like tops that drape and not be 'sticky outie' either 🤣. As for quilting cotton..no no no for me but some people love it! 😊🧵
Wow, the Donny shirt looks good on you. I was against sewing that shirt for a long while. And now I'm debating on sewing it, but I defin woulditely would add the inch in the front like most people have been doing.

I watched that one with the bag, I think I’ll make a few , they would make great Christmas gifts for the ladies in my family. I’m curious to see the result of that top pattern, I have it, but have not made it yet. I’ll wait to see how you get on with it before I try it. Hi Deb. BTPD has moved from Ireland to Poundbury on the outskirts of Dorchester. It is the town that Prince Charles (as he was then) designed and created. A very random place to end up but it's on our way to the Holiday Home! 👏🏼. Adam and I had a great time there xx

Hi Carole! Lovely, lovely job on your Donny. Friday Pattern Co., has such wonderful patterns, although I don't think their cover photos ever do them justice. Funny you made an indie pattern and I decided to try a big 4 pattern because of your influence. I think you'd love S8841! I made vA, using a double gauze as a wearable toile and I love them. I did have to chop 4 inches off the bottom, which also slightly reduced the flare but no other alterations were needed. I was surprised the instructions did not include a lining, interfacing or understitching for the pockets. I did anyway and it makes a big difference. I'm so envious that you have a BTPD so near you. Andrea has such great eye for color in her fabrics. Have a wonderful time with Adam!
Thanks so much for your kind comments re my Top. I LOVE 8841 and have made it about 6 times. Yes, I also need to chop so much off the bottom as I make as crops. Glad to hear that you had success with the pattern. I never put any lining or interfacing on the pockets and I haven't had an issue. I would think lining them would be too bulky on top of the trousers? The only thing I make sure I do is edge stitch around the pocket no more than a couple of mm as otherwise they can stick out.

Hi there. That's an interesting question. It depends on many things really, type of fabric, pattern I have made before or a new one, does it need alterations etc.
I never trace patterns unless they are for babies or children. I don't do muslins I just risk the fabric. I sew everything first with my main machine then overlock the edges.
I am, I think though quite a quick worker and generally can make a top or pair of trousers in about 2-3 hours. T shirts a lot less than that. I sew in the evenings from about 7-9:30 and if I am making a garment I am pretty sure, unless I come across problems I can sew something in that time. It may just need finishing the next day.

Thanks so much! Your answer did help a lot, but you're right. It depends on a few things. I asked because I was curious to know how long it took an experienced sewer to make a top. I am starting to sew clothes. I guess I wanted to know what to work toward. I hear the sewers on #fridaysews say they "made 5 garments last week" or that they "made an outfit last weekend." I'm slow at sewing and feeling pretty inadequate, lol☺️. Thanks again for your reply!
@cindytaylor5466 oh gosh please don't ever feel like that. I know some people can churn out garments but don't forget they may have more time than you and more experience. I tend to make simple garments (as that is my lifestyle) so I sew quickly as I don't have to think about each step.
There is lots to be said about slow sewing and its merits. You probably take far more care than the lot of us and seek for perfection. I'm just happy if it looks ok 🤣.
I do hope you don't get discouraged and just enjoy what you do. Most people can't sew anything at all so if you only make one garment then be happy with that!! Hope that helps xx
