And while his talent was still recognized, he got continuously ridiculed and accused of "becoming a diva" despite not having any evidence about that. With all the allegations made against Lea Michele about how she has been xenophobic and nasty to those she considers as threats, it makes me wonder if Jake really was supposed to be more prominent in the show but just got sabotaged.
It's not autotune. It's called gating and it's something that's used to give a song a 'dance' kind of vibe. It doesn't actually do anything to tune their voices, it's just an effect. The best thing to compare it to is one of those little microphone toys that make it sound like your voice is echoing.
It’s a stylistic choice. If auto tune is used to actually tune the pitch of your voice you can’t really notice it Unless you’re wayyyyy off the note not just slightly sharp or flat.
