Ich hatte Glück und konnte La Superba oft auf der Opernbühne erleben. Das erste Mal vor etwa 50 Jahren. Ihre Stimme rührt mich auch heute noch zu Tränen.
I was once privileged to take my parents and some friends to a concert given at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, by Monserrat Caballe. Apart from the blisteringly magnificent singing, she filled the whole evening with amusing little asides and often self-deprecating humour. At the end, there was a standing ovation for several minutes. She bowed and smiled and walked off stage. A few moments later and she was back again. When the applause had subsided (she herself had to sign for it to do so!) she said, with mock pathos, 'They say I sing enough, and I must stop now. I say, 'Oh no...I sing just one more song, please.' They say, 'Hokay!' but I going to sing three! Then she shrieked and rocked with laughter, sang three more, and brought the house down! What a wonderfully kind and warm lady, and of course a peerless cantatrice!

Addio La Superba ! RIP (1933-2018). One of the most riveting operatic personalities of the 20th century! Endowed with a sensational and ample spinto voice, her repertory was extremely diversified, from classical melodies, to Zarzuela, pop hits (scoring huge triumphs with pop artists including Freddie Mercury and Vangelis) and of course opera, in roles ranging from Alceste, Medea, Semiramide, Contessa in the Nozze di Figaro, Norma, Imogene, the Tudor Queens, Violetta, Leonora, Elisabetta (in Don Carlos: a most fabulous interpretation), Manon, Salomé (Hérodiade), Manon Lescaut, Mimi, Floria Tosca, Princess Turandot, Adriana Lecouvreur, Arabella, Salome and countless others, including rarely performed works, both in opera and on the concert platform! A God’s voice, her perfect breath control (only challenged by that of Leontyne Price) was awesome, her mastery of the pianissimi (frequently overused) and long-sustained high notes (glorious if somewhat metallic high-Cs and Ds ) were thrilling to the last and projected easily in the largest auditoriums. Her trills were sometimes lazy as was her vision of the prosodic line, which she knew how to accommodate to best fit with her own vocality! She was a marvelous, unique and generous Lady whom I was privileged to know and of whom I have fond memories. She leaves an undisputed and regal artistic legacy. One of the last operatic titans! Her radiant smile and indomitable sense of humour will be missed but her talent will last through her many recordings. She was an ambassador of peace and humility … Her voice will resonate high up there among singing Angels who will rejoice in welcoming her loving soul in a better world. RIP.

Since her first Norma in 1970 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona I had the honor and pleasure to attend to all her performances, normally she used to sing two operas every season! I feel so privileged and she and her husband, a wonderful gentleman, will always be in my heart! ❤️❤️❤️
Montserrat era tesissima quella sera, e chi ha seguito i suoi concerti se ne rende conto. Concesse almeno 8 bis ma le sue interlocuzioni col pubblico furono pochissime e molto trattenute. Ritornava alla scala dopo “ Anna Bolena” e confessò poi di avere avuto grande fifa. Fu una grande prova!
Montserrat was always been rejected by many “tifossi”, she simply accepted to come back to teach that kind of “tifossi” that for over 3 decades she was simply the best soprano! It’s a shame that due to this kind of ignorant people the rest of the audience couldn’t enjoy Montserrat’s magic!!
Siempre que cantaba “Las hijas del Zebedeo" le hacía el mismo guiño a su marido. Cambiaba en la letra “aquel picaronazo" por “aquel pícaro maño". Tuvieron una vida larga juntos, y parece que feliz. D.e.p.

The powers that be don’t want Divas. The stage directors want to be the focus but they dont realize people come to be healed by the singing.
