I grew up listening to Rock music...mid 60's, 70's & early 80's. Trust me when I say, yes, the 70's had some GREAT music like this, but, it had a whole lot of horrible shit too! Stuff that you thought sucked the moment you heard it. A lot of "one and done" artists. A lot of bubble-gum crap that was done just to top a chart, not because it was art!
I don't think it is fair to say stuff like this came out every week. Crap came out every week. Stuff like this came out on occasion. And, it was NOT loved, not by the charts at least. This song topped out at 63 on the Billboard Top 100. Top 40 was considered "a hit" in music, and got a LOT of air time on radio. From my perspective, that was proof that Billboard was pathetic. But, perhaps because it DIDN'T get a ton of air time, perhaps that helped to keep it "fresh" too. All I know is, maybe we were "spoiled" back then, but, we didn't know it. All we had to do was look at what was mostly on Top 40 to know otherwise. Nothing against the artists behind those top songs, but, here is an example of "Top Hits" from 1973 - "Bad Bad LeRoy Brown", "Delta Dawn", "Touch me in the Morning", and "You're So Vain"...again, NOTHING against these artists, but, we had a LOT of stuff pumped into the airwaves that wasn't so spectacular, not like Steely Dan.
You really had to know to go looking for this. And, in defense of Billboard, Steely Dan refused to tour, and live concerts where the promotional tool of radio. Steely Dan performed one live concert when they first had an album released, Becker & Fagen hated it so much, they swore they'd never do another one. It took a number of years, decades actually, before they did another live appearance. The reason they didn't like them was their inability to recreate the same sound live as they could in a studio, and, both were prefectionists.

The lead guitarist on this tune is Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. He later joined the Doobie Brothers!! a band you also like! That is a connection I wanted you to know! During his stint with the Doobies, he became interested in combat related rocket science. No joke! As in “it’s not rocket science”. In his case it was! He is now an advisor for the government in the field of rocket science with a top secret clearance. You just can’t make this sh.t up!!

I would highly reccomend Caves of Altamira too, even before the others suggested. Aja and Gaucho are their best albums but if anyone asks me for an example of flawless music, I play Caves of Altamira and the listener never disagree. Actually, to hell with this, I would tell you to get their discography and read about the band. The lyrics are always beyond what we hear, very smart always, with cryptic meanings. Oh, Donald Fagen's solo output is also PERFECT, specially his solo debut Nightfly album. These guys got the best of jazz/funk and mixed with pop and prog rock of their time, creating the shape for almost everything that was great in the 80s pop. Btw, Aja is still considered the best album production ever, and in their following release, Gaucho, Fagen/Becker tried so hard to reach perfection that they ended losing much material. For ex. they selected the musicians so weel, even picked Mike Knopfer after hearing the Sultans of Swing hit solo. But in the end, their standard was SO high that they used only around 10 seconds of Knopfer's guitar. I remember hearing they took almost a hundreds of takes for the simply fade out ending of Babylon Sisters and created some kind of giant machine for hit the drums the way the wanted and nobody could play.

I am so thankful, because I know a lot of these are people who didn't grow up with this music on the radio...and they are discovering it for the first time, which means it will live long after those of us who were, as Jamel rightly says, spoiled to have it in our youth.

One of SD's best imo. The wiki on this explains a little about what this song means.
The song's lyrics tell the story of a drug bust at Bard College (named "Annandale" in the lyrics after its location) while both Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were students there, and how a female acquaintance had inadvertently betrayed them to "Daddy Gee" (G. Gordon Liddy, then the local prosecutor). The upshot is that the singer vows he is "never going back" to the college until "California tumbles into the sea."

There is nothing simple about Steely Dan's music. Fagen and Becker would demand take after take, and would have the same song played by a completely different group of session musicians in search of the perfect version.

I'm willing to bet you never heard either of those at work.
