How Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affected M.I Abaga and Eniola's marriage

  • Being the one with ADHD, you might experience constant criticism, nagging, and micromanagement. Nothing you do appears to satisfy your spouse or lover, regardless of what you try. You shun your partner or say everything necessary to get them off your back since you don't feel appreciated as an adult. You wish your partner would let up just a little bit and quit trying to manage every area of your life. You are curious about the one you fell in love with.

For those who might want to ask:
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. Individuals with ADHD typically have difficulties with attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity.
The symptoms of ADHD can vary widely but may include:
Difficulty paying attention or focusing on tasks
Impulsive behavior and difficulty controlling impulses
    Hyperactivity or restlessness
    Forgetfulness or disorganization
Difficulty completing tasks or following through on commitments
Procrastination or avoidance of tasks that require sustained mental effort
Difficulty with time management and planning
Interrupting others or speaking out of turn
    Trouble following instructions or directions
Problems with anger management or emotional regulation
There are several types of ADHD, including predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. ADHD can be diagnosed and treated by healthcare professionals, and a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes can help individuals with ADHD manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

I am 33 year old nurse and just last week found out that I have ADHD. Someone referred me to this video cos they know I’m a big MI fan. Now I’m both relieved and scared. I wish I knew this sooner. I unconsciously developed coping skills and I thought everyone was the same although I always thought I was a bit different in the way I process things. I’m embarrassed that as a very experienced nurse, I’ve always had incomplete knowledge of the condition. I thought it’s only hyperactive aspect and never suspected I had it because I am severely introverted. Now I know, I wish I help everyone else understand themselves

One easy sign is watching this video and reading comments at the same time or watching a movie and pressing your phone. Or thinking different scenes in your mind. It is not a disorder doctor. It is just a different brain function. People with ADHD may find it hard to get up in the morning, stop pressing their phones etc. their minds are always racing and they get anxious easily. They can be hyper focused or not interested at all.

Wow first off Eni is so beautiful 🥰💕. This is the first time I'm hearing about ADHD, the symptoms is so very similar to my life experiences. Now I know the medical name to my condition.
This is the reason my marriage is suffering 😭😭. Hubby is tired and calls me a liar cos I forget things easily and still defend myself 😔. I've questioned myself and God severally, confused and going into depression not knowing I have a condition I'm battling with.
I'm getting flashbacks and realizing the cause of most of my inabilities now. I will one day put all the pieces together and share my story. For now I'm glad I stumbled on this 🙏🏻

Thank you so much for this discussion. I haven't been able to speak on this since I found out that I had ADHD because I feel like people may not understand it. I still struggle with it even in my relationships with people. It often shrinks because I find it hard to keep my attention on the discussion or maintaining such discussion for a while. I do better when I don't have to talk to my people often, that way my mind doesn't feel bombarded with trying to keep up with different conversations. I also feel guilty when people don't seem to understand why I'm that way. I hope I can do better. I also struggle with perfectionism, procrastination and having to focus on a particular idea or thing for a long time.

    Types of ADHD
There are three different ways ADHD presents itself, depending on which types of symptoms are strongest in the individual:
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: It is hard for the individual to organize or finish a task, to pay attention to details, or to follow instructions or conversations. The person is easily distracted or forgets details of daily routines.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: The person fidgets and talks a lot. It is hard to sit still for long (e.g., for a meal or while doing homework). Smaller children may run, jump or climb constantly. The individual feels restless and has trouble with impulsivity. Someone who is impulsive may interrupt others a lot, grab things from people, or speak at inappropriate times. It is hard for the person to wait their turn or listen to directions. A person with impulsiveness may have more accidents and injuries than others.
Combined Presentation: Symptoms of the above two types are equally present in the person.
Because symptoms can change over time, the presentation may change over time as well.

Learn about symptoms of ADHD, how ADHD is diagnosed, and treatment recommendations including behavior therapy, medication, and school support.
    Causes of ADHD
Scientists are studying cause(s) and risk factors in an effort to find better ways to manage and reduce the chances of a person having ADHD. The cause(s) and risk factors for ADHD are unknown, but current research shows that genetics plays an important role. Recent studies link genetic factors with ADHD.1
In addition to genetics, scientists are studying other possible causes and risk factors including:
    Brain injury
Exposure to environmental risks (e.g., lead) during pregnancy or at a young age
Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy
    Premature delivery
    Low birth weight
Research does not support the popularly held views that ADHD is caused by eating too much sugar, watching too much television, parenting, or social and environmental factors such as poverty or family chaos. Of course, many things, including these, might make symptoms worse, especially in certain people. But the evidence is not strong enough to conclude that they are the main causes of ADHD.
    Diagnosis
Deciding if a child has ADHD is a process with several steps. There is no single test to diagnose ADHD, and many other problems, like anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and certain types of learning disabilities, can have similar symptoms. One step of the process involves having a medical exam, including hearing and vision tests, to rule out other problems with symptoms like ADHD. Diagnosing ADHD usually includes a checklist for rating ADHD symptoms and taking a history of the child from parents, teachers, and sometimes, the child.
Learn more about the criteria for diagnosing ADHD
    Treatments
    physician speaking to family
In most cases, ADHD is best treated with a combination of behavior therapy and medication. For preschool-aged children (4-5 years of age) with ADHD, behavior therapy, particularly training for parents, is recommended as the first line of treatment before medication is tried. What works best can depend on the child and family. Good treatment plans will include close monitoring, follow-ups, and making changes, if needed, along the way.
    Learn more about treatments
    Managing Symptoms: Staying Healthy
Being healthy is important for all children and can be especially important for children with ADHD. In addition to behavioral therapy and medication, having a healthy lifestyle can make it easier for your child to deal with ADHD symptoms. Here are some healthy behaviors that may help:
Developing healthy eating habits such as eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and choosing lean protein sources
Participating in daily physical activity based on age
Limiting the amount of daily screen time from TVs, computers, phones, and other electronics
Getting the recommended amount of sleep each night based on age
ADHD can last into adulthood. Some adults have ADHD but have never been diagnosed. The symptoms can cause difficulty at work, at home, or with relationships. Symptoms may look different at older ages, for example, hyperactivity may appear as extreme restlessness. Symptoms can become more severe when the demands of adulthood increase. For more information about diagnosis and treatment throughout the lifespan, please visit the websites of the National Resource Center on ADHD and the National Institutes of Mental Health.

When reading I would skip lines and I couldn’t solve problems from row to row, I would always skip rows or start from the bottom of a task. I can’t focus my attention on anything that doesn’t interest me and even at work, during meetings, my mind drifts off someplace and drifts back and at that point am lost and struggling to understand the context of what is being taught or discussed. Also daydreaming was a BIG thing for me in high school in the middle of class. It’s been tough I have to admit. Being forgetful, careless and talking a lot are some of the indicators as well.

Being married a neurotypical spouse married to someone with ADHD is torture. Especially, when they are not willing to get the proper help for fear of the stigma that it would bring. I’m left constantly repeating myself on the smallest things. Picking up after him on pretty much everything, because nothing is ever completed unless he’s reminded (then I’m nagging, because he would’ve gotten to it eventually). I’m tired and I feel like there’s no hope. It’s the same cycle and there’s no progress.

I have read about ADHD numerous times, if not for anything probably because i studied "Social Work" in school. One of the benefits of studying my course is understanding different types of mental disorder and how they pose a threat to humans if not been tackled at an early stage of their lives. Studying Social Work makes me feel i am a therapist myself, but it turns out to be that i am a therapist who also needs a therapist.
Having read about ADHD, it becomes more vivid to me that i am battling with it. I tried to get people to share with and tell them that i have ADHD without being shy most especially family members but everyone thinks i am just being negative about myself and it kills me the more.
I can't afford a therapist because i am from a poor background (sorry to say, but i have to admit). My family is not helping me cope at all probably because they don't understand the condition and not willingly apparently. I keep fighting this battle in my brain alone with no one to help. Please if there is a chance for me to be engaged in conversations like this with you guys to share my views and also to help me cope i will appreciate.
    Thank you.

I can totally relate I have not been diagnosed but lol I always say I am naturally forgetful because when I was little my dad says "you are so forgetful" and my mom says you like "delaying and keep turning around"... I always perform well in task when I pay attention but to get me to focus and do stuff takes a lot of work... I had to cautiously limit my distractions so they don't overwhelm me... In fact the first time I read about adhd was in pharmacy school but the lecture slide made it look like its a condition from substance abuse or maybe I didn't understand it since I know I wasn't going to chose questions on it in the exam so I focus on other easier topics... in my work life I saw myself not paying attention to the level I wanted then I googled attention deficiency then adhd came up and I could see my life struggles on the net.... anyways my coping mechanism is paying attention to my self(my strengths and weaknesses), identify positive energy and keep them really close because I realize it helps me perform better on task.... I wish there is some kind of evaluation of adhd level online and relatable help resources..... MJ helps with exhaustion and selection of achievable task also brisk walks or long lonely journeys helps me in prioritizing task.... I really can't wait for "did I just do that" Thank you
