- Here are 3 places to stop along the Pacific Coast Highway in Big Sur, California. Big Sur is a beautiful area and Highway 1 offers many breathtaking stops. Here are my favorite! Hopefully they help you pick a few great stops for your next California road trip!

Incredible scenery . I'm coming to the states from England in 2018 to specifically drive highway 1 from SF to LA. Will defo visit the nepenthe restaurant. Iv been up to Malibu from LA and was so mesmerised by the coastline it got me salivating for a longer drive. Great vid X

ohhh that was pretty cool... ive never been to those spots... I usually avoid highway 1 when I drive back up there... but only because it takes forever to get up from LA... One day ill have to purposefully plan stops along the way and make it a highway 1 kinda trip. Thanks for the suggestions... they all look great and worth taking the time to stop.

Definitely a California condor at the 2:24 mark. You can see a brief flash of the tag on the upper part of the right wing. an amazing capture. You can believe this or not but he was checking you out. They are more social than people realize.

I'd add also a stop at hurricane point, one mile south of Bixby Bridge. From there you look north back at the bridge and the coast and also from there you can see the Pt. Sur Lighthouse.

Great video! My wife and I are from Canada. we were looking forward to big sur on our US roadtrip but looks like the landslide on hwy 1 is changing our plans for the coast drive :(
Thank you! Yes, Big Sur has had a rough year with erosion and landslides and falling bridges. Sorry that it has changed your travel plans. Parts of Big Sur are still open. Just make sure to check Cal Trans. Where else are you headed on your roadtrip? Any more spots in CA?
mickcracker You can try going on hwy 101 the stuff on that hwy isn't as beutiful
So, are those spots that you showed out of limits since they had the landslide and the bridge problems? or is it still possible to travel part of the scenic road and turn back to Monterey if coming from the north or if coming from the south is it possible to take in part of the hwy 1 and go as far as possible and then take a road to the freeway 5?I am planning to go to San Francisco and wanted to take hwy1 all the way up there.. verry nice video!:) i been there in 2012 , i really mis it:(( its breath taking. i take the highway 1 from san fran to la, bhut way i didnt see that beautifull restaurant:( next year i wil be back, cane you tell me is that restaurant if you go on the highway 1 from San Fransisco to L.A do you drive by that restaurant? because i didnt see it in 2012! cheers
Thank you very much! Yes, if you drive HWY 1 from SF through Big Sur on the way to LA you will pass by the restaurant. There's a big yellow sign that says Nepenthe, but I can see how people miss it. It's a bit pricey, but the views are gorgeous and the food is fresh. If you need help planning your next trip or have questions, let us know! Happy to help! Hi! How exciting! Make sure you check the road conditions because there is a big bridge that they just recently demolished from so much rain damage. People were stuck in Big Sur and people couldn't go in. Not sure when they are opening it back up, but wanted to give you a heads up! The video at 0:14 I believe was right after Bixby Bridge also on Hwy 1 in Big Sur. It is a beautiful little underpass. :) Where are you from? Will this be your first CA trip?
yes ive been to the LA are couple years ago but was for couple days and i was stationed in 29palms ca back in 1998 but a lot of things have changed since then and now that i have my family the short visit couple years ago left us wanting ore of California. yes ive been keeping up with the road conditions looks like after San Fran we will drive down to Monterrey then hit the 101 then 46 then stay at morro bay and then check Hearst castle before driving back to LA .

Great video! I'm planning a trip for my husband and I out west...... we will be flying in from New Orleans, LA. which airport should we fly into? I want to make it a road trip but throw in a few spa days at the Post Ranch Inn.... any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
Hi Cheryl! Thank you and great question! It depends on how long you have for your road trip! You could fly into SFO and make your way down Hwy 1 for 1-2 days or fly into LAX and head North. Those will most likely be the cheapest options for flights. The two closest airport to Big Sur are the Monterey Regional Airport (30 miles), or San Jose (100 miles). Hope that helps! I'm super jealous! The Post Ranch Inn is LOVELY!

Condors are the coolest part at the falls. Must have seen over three hundred of them buzzards.
What time of year is this? I'm trying to figure out the best month to go!
Hi! I think this was in August. Personally, I think the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons right after Summer (Sept-ish) and Spring time. Spring time is gorgeous because of all the green and wildflowers too, sometimes there are rain showers, but mostly it is nice weather. As of right now, there are some road closures in the Big Sur area, but they should be done fixing the roads in a few months. Summer of course is a great time to visit if you don't mind crowds. They never tell you Nepente's is as expensive as hell.
Yes, true it is pricey, but if you've never been I think it's worth the splurge? However, there's plenty of more affordable and great places to eat on a budget!
