    Sacred Stones is such a perfect game, honestly.
    The conversation between L'Arachel and Ephraim/Eirika really puts to show the personality of both protagonists.
    Eirika won't believe that Lyon can't be saved, and L'Arachel needs to reassure that he's gone and there's no way of peacefully saving him.
    Ephraim quietly accepts that Lyon is gone, and L'Arachel can't believe how quickly he set his mind towards saving Lyon through death.

    It's crazy how the stories keep Lyon consistent in how the twins see him. In Ephraim's route Lyon does all the talking and makes it seem like he's pulling all the strings (But in reality it's the demon king). But in Erika's route it seems like Lyon is being dragged along with the generals and he even shows signs that he doesn't want to be a part of what they're doing. On Ephraim's side Lyon is the aggressor but on Erika's side he's the victim. SS has one of the best stories in the series

    • @cultreader9751
      @cultreader9751 Před 3 lety +31

      I always hated how Lyon was portrayed in Eirika's route. Still do. He's a generic villain. Ephraim Route Lyon is a nuanced, subtle character trapped and consumed by his negative emotions. He is the Demon King, the Demon King is he.
      Seeing them side by side like this makes him a little more bearable, but that's a feature not available in-game.

    • @louisantonio2462
      @louisantonio2462 Před 3 lety +24

      @@cultreader9751 I understand your perspective but think of it this way; with both routes completing the puzzle, we can understand that Lyon does have bearings over himself. Which is all the more reason why he is acting like the generic villain that Eirika did not want him to be in order to for her to steel herself and strike him down for good. With Ephraim's case, he understands that he is able to handle the truth in stride and as such is willing to come clean with who he really is at that point. On the other hand, Eirika, being so easily swayed and manipulated, would find it hard to truly accept the truth as is; and would not resolve to the redemption he wanted out of the person he loved. He wanted Eirika to strike him down, as well as making her believe that he will die as the Demon King by her hands, instead of dying as Lyon in order to keep that memory of his kind self alive in the person he loves. It's all intrinstic and has to be inferred of course but that's my take on his character.

  • @Tea_Noire
    @Tea_Noire Před 7 lety +423

    It actually makes sense that Eirika's Lyon would be more manipulative, because Lyon had a crush on her, and Eirika knew that and took pity on him because of it. Ephiram's Lyon would be more aggressive, because Lyon and Ephiram had a friendly rivalry prior to the war, and him being obsessed by the Demon King would have just amplified those feelings of competition.

      Honestly, Valter being a big scumbag is a pretty good motivation to fight. I used google translate and then edited it to make more sence, so not exactly a good translation, but valters words in japanese were basically(quoting from memory)
      "oh cormag.
      You are up against Grado.
      I did not think you would betray us.
      *short pause*
      No way. You thought you could defeat me.
      You cannot beat me with your power. You know that.
      Yet again, if you show your loyalty towards
      Grado, that life of yours will be saved.
      You don't want to die as a traitor, don't you?
      cling to me!
      Please cormag!"
      Cormag then says:
      "Valter, I'm a traitor.
      If we both fight, one of us will fall....it may be me.
      But someone as lowly as you has nothing to wish for."
      And valter then says:
      "Nononononono,
      that is what I am saying.
      You'll entertain me more
      than your brother did!"
      Once again, this was what happened when a dude who does not understand japanese used google translator and then edited the text to make sence. So it is in no way accurate. But still an interessting thought how it portraits the scene diffrently from the english localisation.

      Orson is more a tragic villain, though his role as a villain is actually pretty large in the grand scale of the story given that Renais was turned to ruin during his reign and because of that carelessness is a major factor why Ephraim was welcomed onto the throne so welcomely. though as for Orson's character itself, His wife dies of illness, a wife who he is pretty much known among the knights for adoring above all else. Suddenly someone comes along and says that they can bring her back. Put yourself in his shoes and suddenly you thinks "this deal sounds suspicious, but... if it's possible and they can bring her back..." and the only cost i turning coat, most men would still take the quite literal Faustian bargain just for that chance, and lo-and-behold, that's EXACTLY what he does. I'd say his backstory actually makes him even sadder as an enemy, not in the sense of true sorrow, but sad as in he genuinely had motives besides "Ah, I'm a bad guy! I want gold/and or prestige!". All Orson wanted was to live his life with his wife.

Also, the Joshua stuff really isn't all that important in the story overall.

    The best part about this game... The writing is subtly different. Eirika's route is more emotional and filled with highs and lows. From the death and reuniting of a Queen and her long lost son, to saving villagers from certain doom, Eirika's route really makes you want to play a hero and save the land from the dark creatures, all while trying to evade the stronger Grado army. Conversely, Ephraim's route is very cold, warlike, and not entirely heroic. He doesn't go too far out of his way to save people like Eirika. He has a job to do and he gets it done.
    I personally like Eirika's story better, it's always been my favorite of the two. Though Ephraim's story has it's fun parts (I really enjoy all the maps he runs through over Eirika's path).
    And for those hating on Fates... We all know it had HUGE potential, sadly they dropped the ball on it and I hope they learned their lesson. But I whole heartedly loved the children's story from the DLC. Definitely shows they can write good stories if they have a solid plot.

      Regarsing to Duessel he trained with him as a child when he visited grado and was a fatherly figure to him in some ways. It's by no means going out of his way to save someone. He has his goals well stablished and befriending Duessel it's a subproduct of crossing paths with him, not him going out of his way to "save" Duessel.
      Same with Selena, he recognizes the potential she has as an ally and lets clear he rather would recruit her to have a powerful ally in the future than fight her. Yet when she shows she is blinded by the grief of Vigarde's death, Ephraim doesn't think twice and fights her to death. Eirika had the better story

    • @faylure9985
      @faylure9985 Před rokem +4

      Lol, Ephraim's route is in no way bettrr history wise. As a character Ephraim itself is a worse character and has a worse and more bland developement that her sister Eirika.
      The story itself is worse by a large mile, character developement and world building is nowhere near as complete as in Eirika's route.
      And can make many points about Ephraim's route being better in many ways but story wise it's not even close, Eirika's story is better story wise in every single aspect and the fact that you state otherwise is clear proof that you didn't understand the story.
      Ephraim's route has harder maps, in the stories we get to know more about the story and the tragedy that surrounds Grado military, the Generals in particular. Discovering that the emperor is a puppet is not a big reveal, we already knew the Renais brothers were childhood friends and that Grado realized a surprise attack to Renais. We also get to meet (evil)Lyon sooner and everything in the story is just revealed as his path advances. The motivations for the characters on Ephraim's route makes narrative emphasis on how some are evil and why and why some are good and just yet they knowingly serve evil. Yet it doesn't go deep enough intos subject. Characters like Duessel and Selena have prwtty cool arcs but they aren't really that explored. Ephraim's route also has the handicap of being basicly a sidequest until after the end of chapter 9. It has neat explanations earlier on like Myrr, Selena, Duessel, evil Lyon or dead pupped Vigarde. But that's all, and Ephraim's lack of real flaws and extreme stoicism cripples severly it's narrative and character developement, since Ephraim almost doesn't have flaws he can't really improve or develop with the depth Eirika does.
      Eirika's route on the other band has a lot of better worldbuilding explanations, keeps as unknown the reasons about why everything it's hapoening but as early as chapter 4 (iirc, the Lute+Arthur chapter) you get hinted very heavily that this is not a simple armed conflict between greedy humans and that some otherwordly evil forces are at play.
      You also get to see Eirika's developement and flaws way more clearly; the amount, cadence and variety of troops that join your group feels more organic and in check with the narrative.
      The maps are a bit worse in terms of gameplay balance and overall a bit easier, a feeling augmented by the fact that you had the first 9 chapters to develop some sort of roster that you can keep fully using if you choose Eirika's path.
      Eirika as a character is full of flaws, she is naive, she is delusional, she is on negation phase of the biggest reveals until the truth slapz her in the face (like Lyon being evil and too far gone to be possible to save him) and so on.
      Not only in Eirika's rout we get to see more of how a good and well intentioned Character Eirika is but also the struggles to let go from th3 past while being reconciliating about the common suffering of all the involved. She tries to move forward while she tries to not lose those things that make her special: Empathy, opneness, faith in good and trust in her friends and comrades. And we see her fail, we see her fail in spectacular manner many times: She fails to get fast to her destination, fail to save the stones, fail to save Jehanna in time, fail to admit defeat if that means giving up on hope about someone she loves and fail to recognise other people's feelings towards her and her surroundings despite empathy being one of her stronger psicological aspects.
      We also see Eirika travel the world basicly on foot and face challenges in different parts of the xontinet of Magvel, from swamps or high mountain peaks to portuary cities and diferent scenarios heavily influences by the places the take place on, like Carcino's fights or her failed attempt to save Jehanna from harm.
      She also suffers extra because of how is she as a character, because she wants to see the best in everybody and tries to redeem as many people as possible Lyon falls in love with her and she fails to realize it in time, because of that love she gets to meet a Lyon that even when he is far gone stills shows his best face to the woman he loves and when we advance in the story her predetermined inclination for redemption makes her enter in a denial that ends up in her giving one of the kast sacred stones to the very evil they are fighting. She makes this mistake because Lyon tried to be as she remembered before the conflict erupted and tried to keep the demon king perdona at bay while he telked with Eirika, thus later on when everyone with enough knowledge on the scenario tells her that Lyon is too far gone she doesn't accept it, costing the group dearly.
      And after that slap of reality she snaps bsck from it and makes peace with herself, she admits there are things she or anyone cannot fix and comes to peace with the terms that to save the most people she has to confront things that clash with her personal beliefs, like having to give up on people she loved for the benefit of the greater good. And even then, when she fights Lyon she admits that she is not fully mentally prepared to face what she has to do to succeed in saving the world.
      So in conclusion: While Ephraim's route offers a bigger challengeoverall in a game that is not specially hard and the maps of his route are generally harder. The character of Ephraim evilves very little comoared to Eirika.
      While Ephraim's rout offers and earlier insight on the real motives causing the international conflict in Magvel and the point if view on some of those characters at first sight we would consider "the bad guys", it fails on explaining the parts that we discover on Eirika's path. And also many of themore concise insight we get to see is thanks to suppor conversations like the ones between Knoll and Duessel and/or Amelia (and maybe Myrr). It's not that it's only told in Ephraim's rout, it's that in his story we get the tiols to achieve a deeper explanatiom earlier, yet Ephraim's rout completely fails on aknowledging anything that happened in Eirika's rout. While if you choose Eirika's path, one of the only things you get to know the truth about way later is that Lyon is evil, too deep into the rabbithole to be saved. Fuck me, in Ephraim's rotu isn't even aknowledged that Joshua is the heir to Jehanna's Throne.
      Also, key points like the unfolding of Orson's story happens after the reunification of the Renais siblings. So interesting aspects of Ephraim's path get explained outside of his character specific rout.
      In general, it is clear that Eirika's path was always intended to be the main story and that Ephraim's rout feels more like content presented to have an excuse to make a second playthrough and discover some nieche specific aspects of the whole narrative surrounding the war on Magvel and it's causes. Ephraim's rout works great if you have already completed the game through Eirika's path, it offers insighy on minor narrative plots and a hugher difficulty. But it fails to deliver if the player on his first playthrough chooses Ephraim's rout instead of Eirika's.
      On the other hand Eirika's path feels complete on its own, while Ephraim's path for a first playthrough feels incomplete even when the gameplay challenge is slightly more elevated.
      TLDR: You are plain wrong and your statement shows that you either only played Ephraim's route, that you didn't understand the game and its story or that you just based your opinion on "which ine of the siblings looks and acts cooler" and ignore the rest of the aspects that clearly prove Eirika's path to be superior in both character developement and story progression.
      I'm glad to expose your mistaken statement since it clearly is a comment based on personal bias and ignorance rather than an ovjective analysis of the fire emblem sacres stones nareative alternative developement.

    It's so sad that sacred stones has such poor gameplay in the late game, with lame chapters (the one with gorgons is free exp fest, the other one with Riev as boss can be trivialized so easily) and weak enemies. It's ridicolous how easy it is even with no grinding, even though the game has more than one grinding option and the tower gives rewards.

    27:49 you missed the differences between the routes when Myrrh reacts at the end of chapter 20 to the slaying of Morva. My favourite difference that's so much better in Ephraim's route!

    I like Calleach vs Joshua in Ephraim's route better.
    In Eirika's route, the battle's all about Joshua getting revenge, but on Ephraim's, it revealed a more a more neutral side of things like how they were ex - best friends trying to catch up, but unfortunately they were on different sides now and have different goals. One wants to become a king no matter what, the other, I guess, probably made friends along the way, so sadly they have to fight each other or what

    • @imagineumnomefoda500
      @imagineumnomefoda500 Před 4 lety +2

      The dialogue in eirika's route isn't about revenge either. It is about Joshua learning about who killed his mother and what he will do after the war.

    Man, the dialogues here are long but really good and interesting. I mean, FE6 characters didn't get that much development between battles and supports' conversations.

      i mean,they did. most people miss it tho since the chars most interessting are those nobody gives a damn about. like astore/astolfo. you need to support him with the knights and lilina to get his full story and with igrene to get a sidestory regarding him and all of those people are horrible as units. not to mention not everyone fields astore since they prefer to use chad(even tho he is technicly worse as a unit)

    Anyone feels that the GBA trilogy is probably the most consistently good era of fire emblem? All 3 games are REALLY good and kinda get gta 3, vc, and sa, vibes. What I mean is that the we have the first game (binding blade/gta 3) a very solid start that's a bit rocky in some areas. Then we get the next game (blazing blade/gta vice city) a follow-up to didn't change much, rather polish things up a bit here and there. Then we move the 3rd entry (sacred stones/san Andreas) the one REALLY polished things up and delivered an even better experience.

    so in short; *eirika route* to defeat demon king (plot for joshua, glen) and *ephraim route* to defeat lyon (plot for duessel, selena). the latter is more angsty cos of lyon

  • @aquamentus8951
    @aquamentus8951 Před 4 lety +3

    Ch15 Eirika's route quotes are way stronger and better than Ephraim's route which instead sound like casual chat and "I'm not gonna run anymore"
    Eirika's route has the plot and Ephraim's route has the challenge (well since this game is too easy, it isn't that challenging until chapter 18 of course)

    Story wise, I like Eirika's route more, but i prefer how Lyon is handled in the Ephiraim's route. He actually thinks that he's a hero and is trying to use the power of the demon king to become a better leader for his people. The scene where Lyon crushes the Sacred Stone also makes more sense in Ephiraim route since Ephiraim is rightfully pissed off that the Demon King is using his Friend's body as a parasite and falls into a trap, but when he realizes that Lyon is the one pulling the strings, he actually tries to deny it. Overall, i feel the rivalry and friendship between Ephiraim and Lyon was better written.
