If you’re new to the concept of website authority, it’s actually a made up metric from SEO tool companies.
Now, whether you call it Domain Rating, Domain Authority, website authority, or whatever, they all serve the same general purpose: they try to measure the relative “strength” of a website’s backlink profile compared to other sites in their index.
Now, while some tools claim that their website authority metric can predict a website’s ranking potential, you should take that with a grain of salt.
SEOs generally agree that website authority does play somewhat of a factor in rankings. However, Google ranks pages and not websites. So having a goal to improve Domain Rating is too broad and could actually make you lose focus from your true goal of ranking in Google and getting more organic traffic.
By putting the focus at the website level instead of the page level is like painting your whole house just to make your bathroom look good. It might work to a certain extent, but 90% of your efforts actually have no effect on the end goal.
Now, the things that cause an increase in your website’s authority can help you rank higher in Google. And it all comes down to the main thing responsible for calculating this metric. And that’s links.
So, let’s expand on Ahrefs’ website authority metric called Domain Rating.
Domain Rating represents the overall strength of a website’s backlink profile. We look at both quantity and quality of the links pointing at a website. It’s plotted on a logarithmic scale from 0 - 100.
What are the 3 main things that impact this score?
They are:
► number of unique websites that link to you
► Domain Ratings of linking domains
► number of sites the referring website links to with at least one followed link

Hi all, at the risk of some finger wagging I just want to honestly throw my experience into the conversation. After two years of publishing high quality content and getting thousands of backlinks, my Moz da was stuck at 13. I hired someone in Fiverr to raise is for $50, a huge risk I know. Two weeks later my da was 53. I think all they did was submit my site to country-specific Googles around the world. Absolutely zero difference to my ranking or monthly visits.

Fellow SEOs: We have a bigger client who we just did an SEO Site Audit for, and it was discovered that they have several domain names that are simply 301 redirecting to their main domain name. One of their domains in particular is decades old, and the client is asking if there is any value in keeping it (and the others), or simply leaving them as-is. Considering the domain age, does anyone have any recommendations?

@@AhrefsCom I second that. Linking building is not something easily accomplished, but it is for good reasons. Google pays attention to the sites that are pointing to yours. If it were easy, then everyone would rank and SERPs would have no meaning. Leg work makes the pegs work!

Excellent content as always! Question: You've most likely made a video about this so if you can kindly point me in the direction. Here's what I want to do. I have a client who has 3 great pieces of content on his website blog. They are very shareable kind of content, so we want to try to get backlinks and shares of these posts.
How can we do that? Also, if someone posts this same content on their website (for backlink) is that bad? Is there a service we can also BUY to help spread the message of the article as well. I've tried fat joe ($2,000+ Spent), can't say I'm a huge fan of them.

Or for increasing DR, backlinks refering the direct domain, not a blog post are required?
I'm not sure what you're asking exactly, but DR measures the link popularity of a "domain", so as long as the link is pointed at a domain (or a subfolder/subdomain), it should be fine.

But I want to ask you one thing last month my website backlinks numbers is 5.46k, Referring Domain 526 and DR is 54.
Currently, website backlinks numbers are 7.86k, Referring Domain 572 and DR is 52.
Why my website DR is decreased?
The answer is in this video ;) Not just the number matters, but the quality as well. A domain with DR 20 that links to just 10 websites may bring you much more value than domain with DR 50 that links to another 10,000 domains. So your DR is influenced by referring domains and its authority too. If some referring domains lost its authority, they would pass less 'link juice' to you as well, which will lead to a possible drop in your DR, even though your number of referring domains has not changed.

Great information. But I have seen many websites with high DR (greater than 50) with no organic keywords and traffic. Why doesn't these sites get enough traffic even with high DR?
As mentioned in the video, DR is a measure of link popularity. That means it doesn't measure anything about organic keywords or traffic. Which also means that a high DR doesn't necessarily mean you'll rank high in Google (there are other factors involved.)

Nope. DR and KD are unrelated. Also, DR looks at referring domains and not backlinks.

and referring domains can have low quality content too. Most Importantly,DR also relies on number of referring domains and not on quality of referring domains. So if 500 low quality domains refer to a website then that website will have high authority in eyes of ahrefs?

I have checked ahref for my client site it was around 370k visitors on February 2020 and now when i check , now in the graph of traffic it is showing below 300k in February time, what happened to ahref? Any data base updates?
Yes, we update keyword data using new data sources, which influences average monthly search volume. Traffic estimation changes along with search volumes as well.

unfortunately the most of webmasters attention to the domain authority rather than : user friendly or page speed or UI ....
Ranking 'miracle' is a combination of content, links, page speed and numerous other things. So you should care about all of these aspects in order to be a leader in your niche ;)

You need to watch this video again. Higher UR does not mean you will rank higher for 100%. There are numerous other ranking factors.

This is very much an "it depends" kind of question. Generally speaking, I wouldn't worry about it much unless there's clear damage that's been done.

I guess only Google can make such a video as they are the only ones, who knows what stands behind the PageRank. Ahrefs came up with an alternative metric UR which helps to compare the backlink profile of two different pages.

Content doesn't necessarily mean blog posts. It also means content on pages like landing pages, category, product, etc. I'm sure these sites create "content", perhaps not in the model you're thinking of.
