    Thanks so much for the feedbacks and suggestions, Abbey! I would say that these “rules” for myself are just general guides for me to eat more balanced and healthy on or off IF.
    The video was filmed back when I had long hair (at the beginning of this year) and I’ve definitely made a lot of changes to my diet in terms of making an effort to eat more calories & carbs and becoming much more lenient on my fasting schedule^ Looking forward to more of your informative videos!

    I noticed Zoe had a picture of a fit woman as her phone background. I’ve seen this type of behavior in people with disordered eating. She has explained how her relationship with food and fitness has improved over the years but she still makes videos where she gives advice on achieving “slimmer” arms, legs, fingers, etc. Why the focus on slim? That seems to be her desired aesthetic. I always feel a little bothered when unqualified people with semi-problematic relationships with food and fitness make videos giving advice to others on CZcams.

    While I love Zoe and her video essays in particular, she always gave me ED vibes. While stating she is on an IF diet, she has that ‘look how much I am eating while being so skinny’ narrative I think a lot of us with current/past ED experience know all too well. The focus on how healthy she feels while maintaining an incredibly low body weight wouldn’t be concerning in itself but it is also apparent that when she ate sans diet she was a very average and (BMI wise) healthy weight, so being genetically predisposed to extreme skinniness is just not very likely.

    • @hell_ohh
      @hell_ohh Před rokem +17

      I completely understand where you are coming from, but how is aiming for a skinny aesthetic ED vibes? I know we are fortunate to have all sorts of body shapes in society, some may prefer thick curvy body shapes while other skinny physique. Why is that a bad thing? Isn't she supposed to be the judge of how she appears. And if she is healthy with that physique why is that bad? I sound like I'm ticked off or something but I am genuinely not, do you think its perhaps a bias that you have about skinny vs ED?

    • @NaN-wx9ss
      @NaN-wx9ss Před 10 měsíci +18

      @@blessedlife6771 It's hard to say if she has an ED or not and it's not really for us to say but I think the reason some people think that she gives off that vibe is because she seemed very ashamed or unhappy with her body even when she was at a normal weight. She called herself fat and ugly back then and now she is most likely underweight which is not her body's natural weight. She also made a video about how she lost her period for 4 years, I think, which is clearly not normal and is probably a side-effect of her having lost an unnatural amount of weight. Despite that she claims that she is healthy and that she eats a lot while just naturally being skinny.
      I'm not sure how to explain it clearly but for example she had this video about how she eats a lot while still having abs which is blatantly false. It is logically impossible. A lot of women with very defined abs will tell you that it's not worth it and they have to cut back on a lot of food to have such low body fat more so when women naturally have a higher fat percentage (only very few women are able to maintain that without side-effects and even they can't eat whatever they want). It's common ED behaviour to want people to think that it's all natural or to try and prove that it's not an ED.
      Things like this coupled with her criticizing diet culture and how we shouldn't aim to change ourselves as if we're all products while making videos on how to get skinnier legs, abs, longer fingers (???) etc, makes it seem like even if she doesn't have an ED, she still has some problems she needs to work through.
      It's not necessarily bad to want to be slimmer but if that becomes an obsession and starts to ruin a person's health then it's definitely not good. I hope this cleared things up.

    I'm a subscriber to Zoe and she has been struggling with her period for a few years now as she made a video discussing it. She gained weight at the beginning of college and worked hard to remove it but before this, she was already having some period trouble. She said herself that her weight loss during that time didn't help her with her period problems and the way she went about it wasn't the best choice. There was a period of time where she ate low carbs (which may have been when this video was made) which she, herself, admits was a bad decision. She is now including more carbs in her diet and is working on eating more calories to see if that helps her regain her period. I don't know if she's still doing intermittent fasting but I hope that eating more will help her period come back as she's been trying a lot of different things that haven't been working.

Binging combined with guilt made me fall into bulimia. The moment i stopped doing intermittent fasting i started eating like crazy, I was ignoring my hunger for so long, that now I dont know when i need food or if i even need it. When I felt freedom, and didnt have to squize my meals into 8 hours I started eating and snacking 24/7. Now, I think about food all the time. After 3 months of intermittent fasting I lost my period for almost a year. I slowly started fixing my misteakes but it is hard and every single time I feel better I fall into this sick cycle of binging and purging again and again. Hey ❤️, this does not sound like you have a healthy relationship with food. I have been there and I know it feels frustrating. Please open up to someone about it, preferably a professional like a therapist or dietician! Eating can be overwhelming so it can help a lot to let someone else give you a plan and make sure you get all the nutrients your body needs. Just know that trying hard to “control“ your diet will probably be counterproductive. Like Abbey always says, it should be about adding nutritious foods, not restricting. Your body needs enough food and protein to function properly!

I am fortunate to have a son willing to eat for me, and he is extremely clear to all that his mama does not eat and drink at the same time, hence my draining soup broth into a cup to drink. My methods have helped me to enjoy food more, and I'm healthier for it. For all Zoe's struggles, I am impressed she isn't exibiting hyperacuity of fat. Fat is extremely satiating, and part of the struggle is getting over the reward obtained by abstaining from all fat. Perhaps she is eating a bit lightly, but she is eating. And she seems to still know what is healthy. Getting someone to eat more doesn't work. Personally, if I eat when it isn't meal time, I manage only a couple bites, and then I can't eat the rest of my day's portion. I do hope Zoe can work beyond having a relationship with food so that she can enjoy life.

    I have a bit of a conflicting feeling towards Zoe's content. On one note she's very anti-diet culture and always emphasizes that our bodies are different, starving and killing yourself in the gym won't make you happy, health doesn't look the same on everyone, and especially her videos debunking tiktok fitness and body image content are very positive in their messaging so I don't doupt that she is helping a lot of people that have insecurities. That being said she does use clickbaity video titles and is very concerned with aesthetic "goals" and much of her videos regarding health and fitness focuses on being "skinny" , "lean" and "toned", especially her glow-up series. Her videos, whilst beautifully edited contains a lot of images of her body-checking herself, and whilst I get that she is an influencer posing for the camera from different angles, she is also showing off her abs and lean body with a voice over talking about health and fitness, particularly with an emphasis on being lean. She even said in one video that when she started to add progressive overload into her workouts, she was careful not to add heavier weights too fast, because she only wanted "lean and toned" muscles and didn't want to get "bulky". Now, she has every right in the world to desire whatever body type she wants, but I do get tired of women scaring people from "getting bulky" all the time when A.) it is really hard to achieve and B.) Why do having big and visible muscles on women have to be a bad thing? I actually have to take breaks from watching her content sometimes because whilst her overall message is positive, her video content can sometimes trigger my body dysmorphya.
    I also think her older content is very problematic as almost every video that's one or two years old are about different ways she and her viewers can lose weight and get lean. And bear in mind, her channel is barely three years old so this is not even that long ago. Again, her videos always include a disclaimer that none of her advice will lead to massive results overnight, and it depends on other factors like lifestyle, genes, etc, but the main goal and focus of the video is to achieve a skinny aesthetic. I don't want to blame her for her older content as she has evolved since then (although the lean aesthetic seems to be something she is particularly interested in), I just wonder why she would want to keep those videos available for the public, especially considering that she responded Abbey on this video, stating that the video Abbey is refering to is outdated. If she thinks it's irrelevant, why keep it public? Why not just delete it?

      What threw me of the edge was one of her last videos where she just says a bunch of innacurate stuff about calories not mattering etc. She doesnt have a degree or anything of the sort. She shouldnt be trying to educate people on that, specially without a disclamer.

    • @MrBeetlejuice16
      @MrBeetlejuice16 Před rokem

      @@sofiabruiz17 Yeah, I left a comment on her video adressing exactly this issue. She is an influencer, not a dietitian or a doctor. She should clarify this is her videos and state that all the claims in her videos are based on her own research and encourage people to consult with their own doctor.
      I also have a bit of an issue that she keeps referring to her past-self as "chubby" or "fat" when she was still slim, the only difference is that she was slightly bigger than what she used to be, and she didn't have super visible abs. She has even said that one reason that she wanted to lose weight was because she stopped getting so many compliments for her skinny figure. I find it a little worrysome that so much of her identity is based on being "the skinny girl that eats a lot."
      *NOTE, I do understand that when she gained weight she experienced a lot of negative comments from people like her family, and I get that if you used to be one size it can feel very alienating if you all of a sudden change body size, especially if people are going to comment on it as well. My point is that those people were wrong, because she was not fat, and it doesn't help that she as a very slim woman is comparing her weight gain experience with obese people as if she knows exactly what they're going through when she has never been fat or obese.

Everybody’s different really! For breakfast people may have toast with dulce de leche, the younger people may have milk with nesquik
      We call this tea time “merienda”, it’s usually around 4-5pm

But for most people I think it’s really enticing and normalising into anorexic behaviour and mindsets. I was diagnosed with early stages of anorexia this year (shocking bc I’m 23 and not skinny but am on a health journey from bigger bodied over eater) and everything that was pointed out to me is reinforced, advised or seen in Zoe’s vids.

    If you do intermittent fasting to lose weight or to maintain your weight eating whatever you want is off the table. If weight gain is something you don't want then you eat nutrient-dense meals packed with vegetables, proteins, healthy fats, fiber, etc. The cakes, pies, donuts are not something you indulge in daily, but once in a while. The big rule to intermittent fasting is staying hydrated especially if you are eating a low-carb or keto diet. My digestion works so much better while intermittent fasting and my blood sugar levels are even, with no ups and downs. I tend to eat healthier when I fast. I am not a fan of the idea of fasting for days, but an easy fast of 16 hrs works great for me.

    Being S. Korean just like Zoe, I understand the pressure of looking perfect all the time especially body wise being very thin. S. Koreans idolize K-pop singers and celebrities who are thin and beautiful. I really enjoyed her content, but as a recovering anorexic who has been diagnosed and suffered since age 6.. I am 38 years old now and can definitely tell she is bordering disordered eating. I mean one of her videos was titled, “how to slim your legs” or something similar to that. Why do we need to learn how to slim our legs if we are body positive and accepting of all shapes? Her content tries to be super body positive, but not body positive. It was enjoying, but also stressful as she continuously speaks about her weight loss and tips on how to lose weight. I don’t think anyone with any type of disordered eating should follow her. That’s just what I got out of her content, and not trying to be negative but I can’t support a person that is in denial about restricting on a daily basis. Eating a little over 1000 calories is not healthy at all. I used to do this to be acceptable skinny, because I was still eating, just eating at an extremely low calorie deficit.

    I enjoy your video's very much and have learned a lot about intuitive eating.

I know it's not a sub for a mental health professional, but sometimes every little bit can help. And if there are some small things that can help, I would love to know them.

I didn't notice it at first, but the other day we got fast food and I was full with half my normal order. So full that I tried to keep eating and got sick. Even when I smoke weed and get the munchies, my snacks are about half the size they used to be. Without thinking about it I've been pouring my snacks into a bowl instead of taking the whole bag with me. And I've been reaching for healthier foods overall. Isn’t it probably more likely that people absorbed more nutrients because if it tastes better, they’re more likely to completely chew it? Since we know that food that’s properly chewed during the first stage of digestion gets absorbed more easily in the gut? That makes more sense to me that the brain-gut connection because although I 100% believe there’s so much we don’t understand about the enteric nervous system, I do think the more plausible explanation is that enjoying food leads to better chewing and less rushing through a meal.

When I first started my weight loss journey, fruit was a real struggle, until I discovered smoothies made with frozen fruit, protein powder, oats, etc. Before that I didn't eat breakfast, thinking that I was "saving" calories, etc.
    Now, much like I must have coffee and I must make my bed in order to have a good/great day, I must have my smoothie or at least a protein bar and coffee before I leave for work. (And my bed needs to be made but I'm told that's not a "health" issue by my adult children. I disagree, I like going into my bedroom at night and "turning back" my bed covers as I set my coffee and prep my smoothie for the next day.)
    Being financially challenged, I think fresh produce is generally cheaper than powdered or processed substitutes. I make an exception for protein powder because I'm not a breakfast person and protein bars because it's better than not eating anything at all, or a candy bar for lunch.
    My changes and thought processes regarding my weight loss, maintenance and healthier habits are primarily due to all that I have learned from watching your videos and "tweaking" your advice to my tastes. My only "rules" now are "HCC" and "am I happy" and am I eating foods that support both macro micro nutrients.
    Yeah, long message, but ....it's been a successful journey. I also knew before I started, I didn't gain 50 pounds in a week/month, I wasn't going to lose it in a week/month. Slow and steady is more important than "winning the race", it's about a better substantial journey. As always, cannot thank you enough for all your time and effort!!!!

    What do you think about how i break my fast ? I usually fast 32-56 hours and i break it with a glass of kefir in the morning, wait 30 minutes then drink lemon with hot water and a pinch of salt ( to bring back some electrolytes) and then at noon 11.30/12.30 i eat a huge salad with tomato, beet salad, spinach, cucumber and crushed cashews ! And then i might eat some fruit during the day and at evening i usually eat some greens as well ( usually without rice or meat, i do that the day AFTER the day ive broken my fast since otherwise it might be to harsh for my stomach )

    I used to watch occasionally her videos and I liked a lot how her food was balanced and yummy looking. I don't know about her current content, but she used to "jokingly" brag about being a skinny legend, and and how much she could eat without gaining fat because she has some super performant metabolism. Which is straight up sus. At the end of the day, calories IN calories OUT. She's tiny, extremely skinny and doesn't have that much muscle mass to explain a high calorie intake, her body doesn't need ''a lot'' to sustain her current body weight. I used also to think that I ate a lot when I was on intermittent fasting. But the truth is, it's just harder to get your maintenance calories when you miss one or two whole meals.

    I just want to know something. I used to eat stuff that I had to force myself on eating and most of the time feel hungry but when I eat what I enjoy even though is not the healthiest, I feel more energetic and happier. It's hard for me to only eat stuff like fruits and vegetables and I'd like to enjoy more homemade foods like cakes, pizzas etc. I rarely order from out so most of the foods I eat are unfortunately processed foods from the store and homemade which I think it's a bit healthier.

      I’m not a certified nutritionist or dietician but what worked for me was making healthier substitutes on things I liked to eat. You can try following some recipes online or here on yt for more enjoyable foods that nourishes your body. Try adding variety fruits and veggies in different forms to ur current eating lifestyle

    I can't feel myself eating at 8pm because it just makes me uncomfortable mentally and physically. I'd like to balance sweet and salty foods separated because if I eat both in one meal, my body especially my belly begins to bloat. I exercise 6 times a week and are all enjoyable, I walk during the day too and I try to sleep at least 7-8 hours. Is it fine the way I'm proceeding?????

    Hey Abbey, I reluctantly tried a built bar knowing it contained some funky ingredients and it gave me some gnarly GI distress lol Most protein isolates do it, erythritol, and I am thinking anything that says "digestion resistant". Pea protein, whey, caesin, milk protein, isolate/concentrate all mess with me. Egg white protein powder is the only protein powder that doesn't set me off. Its cheaper to just cook up some egg white though. Do you have any suggestions for any other gut friendly protein powder sources to add convenience to smoothies or "anabolic donuts(lol)"? I would love to be able to eat a protein bar from time to time, they are tasty and convenient. But my many attempts all end on the toilet.

      @@AbbeysKitchen Legit! I'm making donuts with tofu, idk why I didn't think to try that protein source in a smoothie. I'm over here trying to figure out how to get 10-20grams of protein from chicken into a smoothie and mask the flavor! ha

      If you have a sensitive gut, I can highly recommend collagen protein in a smoothie. Collagen is not a complete protein so I combine it with chocolate which contains the missing tryptophan. Together they make a delicious, gut-friendly, complete protein snack! 😊

    i have a question: when you talked about the protein-muscle synthesis and the doses of protein, is it a problem that i only eat three meals daily (where i consume my daily protein intake) if i want to build muscle? i´m not a bodybuilder or anything, just a normal person wanting to gain some muscle after losing some due to illness. three meals a day is good for me and i honestly can´t imagine it anyway else, could it be hindering my progress tho?

      I dont know but if you feel nervous about that you can drink skimmed Milk as one snack and eat a protein bar as another. So youd be eating every 4 hrs or so.
