  • HAH! knew this video was gonna cause controversy. read on for an explanation please...
FYI, each year our school has a HOLOKU pageant that features hula, samoan, tahitian, and in some cases maori dances. all instructors for each style of dance are legit, experienced, and very pleased and eager to share their culture and knowledge with us. we try our best to learn the dance and everyone works very hard. obviously everyone doesn't know the EXACT way to dance samoan, and our instructors don't have time to critique each and everyone of us until we get if perfect, so basically, DEAL WITH IT. im hawaiian and i dont get mad when people try and learn hula because at least they are making an effort to enlighten themselves about my culture. if you guys were there at the actual show, when the taupo came out, the floor was covered with samoans. they were all supporting her even though she wasn't samoan, and they ALL had a good time. i wish everyone would be open minded and not be so critical/hateful towards a dance.
and in case you're wondering, im the girl with the fake tat on her back, and the one who leads the girl's dance off. oh yah, and im the one dancing hula too. the name's ILIMA MACFARLANE. if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via comments. TALOFA :)
Punahou Holoku 2007 Samoan Dance...minus the taupo. I'm making that a seperate movie. The beginning is sorta slow, but the dance-off at the end is good. And I edited the beginning alot so it sorta jumps around.

You know, I grew up a palagi girl in Western Samoa, and one of the things I learned right away is you get up and dance with everybody no matter how badly you suck. Because that's fa'a Samoa, right? Everybody dances.

This was really cool. As a Tongan from the family of a hou'eiki (of noble birth), I can understand why some purists might be offended, the siva teine is a sacred dance, it is a dance to respect the ancestors, it is a form of respect, love and honor for those who came before us, much like the Hula Kaahiko and the Tongan Ma'ulu'ulu. Still, we live in modern times and this is a modern interpretation of a cultural dance. I loved it, but I can understand why some in Samoans may be outraged. Malo Atu

This from KANUHA86 in another video site. But I thought it's interesting, so I wanted to include it here. In regards to the Samoan knife, metalwork is not part of the culture, so he said, "true the weapon was actually a club, but with western influence, the club became the knife, and the dance was known as the siva nifo oti, most of the basic fire knife moves is actually war moves. fire was added to the knife in 1965 by chief letuli after he met asians on tour and saw them dancing with fire"

Plus the tatoo designs, they almost look exactly like that of Samoans. Research it yourself, and you'll see that I'm telling the truth. Oh by the way, the word "tattoo" is an Anglicized word borrowed from the Tahitians (TATU) when Cook was there. Tatu is derivitive of the Filipino word "TATAK" which means "markings, designs, or family trademarks"

Uh you're wrong. The word "TATTOO" is Anglicized spelling from the Tahitian word "TATU" which was aquired and adopted into the English language when explorer Captain James Cook ventured onto Tahiti and witnessing the art of tattooing. Now the Tahitian word "TATU" is translated as "markings, brands, family trademarks" just as the Filipino word "TATAK" is the same meaning, of which the Samoan word "TATAU" is the same. And if you look at all the spellings, they're closely related.

But as you can see with not just your comments, there are many Samoans that disagree with you and I. So I'm going to continue telling the truth for them from now on. I don't mind when people try to learn Samoan dances as long as it's an attempt to learn more about the culture, so this is pretty cool. It's weird though, but I hate it when Samoans try to learn hula or tahitian dance because a lot of the time (Samoan) youngsters these days prefer other dances over their own culture. Overall? It doesn't matter. We're all Oceania (or at least that's the way of thinking I hope to maintain). X)
