Dr. Mark G. Bilby holds a PhD from the University of Virginia, graduating in 2012 from its program
in Judaism and Christianity in Antiquity, which combined the study of Early Christianity, New
Testament, Greco-Roman Classics, Rabbinics, and TaNaKh studies. Mark also earned a Masters in
Library and Information Science from Drexel University in 2012, and previously completed two
masters degrees in theology from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He also completed coursework in Syriac at Notre Dame and French and Latin at the University of Missouri Kansas City. Mark has
taught at numerous universities, including Iowa State University, Point Loma Nazarene University,
the University of San Diego, Azusa Pacific University, Claremont School of Theology, and Cal State
Fullerton. At Claremont, Mark served as a Reference and Systems librarian as well as the thesis
secretary for their doctoral programs. He also served for six years as faculty librarian of Scholarly
Communications at Cal State Fullerton, where he led the successful passage of two resolutions
related to open access in the statewide academic senate of the CSU. Mark has published one scholarly monograph with the University of Strasbourg and edited two scholarly book compilations, one with Claremont Press and one with Abingdon. He has published peer-reviewed articles in Harvard Theological Review, the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, the de Gruyter Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception, and the Brill Encyclopedia of Early Christianity. He has contributed chapters to numerous peer-reviewed scholarly compilations, including all three volumes of the More New Testament Apocrypha series edited by Tony Burke and published by Eerdmans.
    Marcion of Sinope
( 85 - c. 160) was an early Christian theologian in early Christianity. Marcion preached that God had sent Jesus Christ who was an entirely new, alien god, distinct from the "vengeful" God who had created the world. He considered himself a follower of Paul the Apostle, whom he believed to have been the only true apostle of Jesus Christ; his doctrine is called Marcionism. Marcion published the earliest record of a canon of New Testament books.
Early Church Fathers such as Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Tertullian denounced Marcion as a heretic, and he was excommunicated by the church of Rome around 144. He published his own canon of Christian sacred scriptures, which contained ten Pauline epistles (the Pastoral epistles were not included) and the Gospel of Marcion which historically is claimed to be an edited version of the Gospel of Luke. Several modern scholars have theorized that Marcion's Gospel was the oldest, although this has received strong criticism as it seems to rest on special pleading.
This made Marcionism a catalyst in the process of the development of the New Testament canon by forcing the proto-orthodox Church to respond to his canon.

I actually read about this a few days back and was mildly surprised to say the least - despite being a Believer, I have to go by data and statistical modeling, and after reading up on Marcion's Gospel (derived from the quotes from attacks AGAINST IT) and setting it up against the Triple and Double Tradition, maybe Marcion's WAS the older Gospel that Luke modeled from. That doesn't necessarily makes it "Scripture" but I am willing to approach the subject with an open mind.

I'm very interested in Marcionism, but I am not sure what his argument was. Someone needs to explain in layman's terms what his findings mean about whether Marcion as right or not.

His findings are that Jewish people were worshiping the devil. Many evidence for this Yahweh is pagan God when they got lost for 40 years and the findings was about The God of the Old Testament or that that’s there 3 people talking The lord abba Jesus and the devil … we have Woutes from the devil I will be like God and we have Qoutes from ABBA and Jesus so you have to have spiritual lens to understand what and understand when ABBA is talking like when Says the lord said to my lord thy enemy will your footstool

That's something only you can decide as faith is a personal and introspective journey. If you want to be spoon fed the answer then you won't get far in your quest. Personally, I can't not believe in a cosmic Saviour as then my life would have no meaning, but the evidence is highly suggestive that the narrative we have in the "official" texts (ie the modern 66 book canon) is either corrupted, edited or contrived in a way to obscure the deeper meaning of what happened in the first century AD and how it relates to the future of man and the ceration. I was a Christian fundamentalist, but now I am starting to see Christ as a more universal figure who's divine light went forward and backward from the Cross influencing ancient mythology and philosophy as well as forward in time. The great pyramid at Giza is perhaps the most obvious and yet the most surreptitious and enigmatic reference to the Creator's unalterable plan for man and the creation. Peace brother.

Marcion was wrong that the creator was the evil one. Ofcourse that's just how we are told he said, because what we have of him was indirect info.
Regardless, since Iesous says the evil one is a liar, it's easy to see the evil one made people believe he created mankind and he owns everything and so he has all the right to do what he wishes.
Though he flips flops from having a higher authority and being the highest in the old testament, the idea of an evil God creator has been created by those who tried to unify the old testament.

    • @Kauaioo182

Marcion never referred the Creator God to be Evil, who referred the God of Abraham, Moses, and King David, To be The Demiurge Samaēl, who corrupted creation to formed this decaying material world.
The God of Abraham, Moses, and King David is The False Creator, The Evil One who rules this material world.
The Heavenly Father God of Jesus Christ, who is the Monad, is The True Creator God, who made the universe, and all things, but The Demiurge Samaēl corrupted it to form this material world.
Why do you think that Samaēl, aka, Ēl-Shaddai blessed a liar like Jacob, who deceived his blind father Isaac?
God The Father would not bless a thief, nor a deceiver like Jacob, as that is listed in one of the deadly sins in Romans 1:29-30.

Marcion was wrong. Saying "the God of the Old Testament is Evil" is incredibly stupid.
God (from Genesis 1) is Good.
The LORD God (from Genesis 2) is Evil. So, the character from Genesis 2 is not God. The LORD God is the usurper/deciever.

I agree that the God in Genesis 1 is different from Genesis 2. It seems that is when The Deceiver took over and rewrote the beginning. However I'm curious how this small distinction makes Marcion wrong in your opinion? It would seem that The Deceiver is the "God" throughout the rest of the OT. and Marcion believed that the Deceiver God was not the one that created us, but was the one from the OT. which would be true if The True God was in Genesis 1 and a different "God" was in Genesis 2? I'm just confused on why you think what you're saying is different from what Marcion said?
