I believe Rhiannon Giddens is a National Treasure and we are lucky to have her. I am 70 years old and so many of my favorites are now dead.

I learned about early American music in the late 79s when it was real popular in the form of festivals. When I saw the bones being played, I loved the rhythm. I found someone who sold then ..real bones, not plastic. It wasn't til this show, I see them being played at this extent...two sets per player. It's awesome!!! Thanks for posting!
I love Rhiannons music with the rest of the band. Ya'll are awesome!!!

I found this group because of my passion for Rhiannon Giddens' Silk Road work. Thank goodness for the internet!

February 15, 2014... Last night had to be the most 'hand clappin', ,foot stompin, Valentine's Day of my life. It being such a special day and all, plus me flying into the cold Louisiana weather from Maine,(no really, there were icicles hangin' down from my brother's roof!) anyways... my brother thought he would treat his wife Missy and I to a music show. So, we drove down streets til we came to the 'heart of New Orleans', squeeeeezed into a space on the corner of Napoleon Ave, and made our way across the street straight into the dimly lit, much loved, historical music hall, 'Tipitina's'. First thing my brother said was, "get in and go almost all the way up to the front then plant yourself in the middle of the stage." Well that was sure easy, there were no chairs anywhere-? Well I soon enough found out why, when the 'Carolina Chocolate Drops' came on stage. They quickly picked up the cello, fiddle, banjo, and 'bones' and I can tell you straight, what began was the best hand clappin', foot stompin, I have ever heard! And me being me, I respected everybodies space and hopped, jumped, wiggled, clapped and twirled in the teeniest, tiniest little circle, no one even noticed. The sounds of the instruments and the singing were soooooo, well, awesome. Oh, and did I mention that the band is the Grammy award winning 'Carolina Chocolate Drops'? Plus did you know they will be performing in Brownfield, Maine in April? They play 'wicked good' stuff. So come on Mainers buy up those tickets...

Pretty much the greatest band of the last 20 years as far as I'm concerned. Every member is a brilliantly talented multi-instrumentalist prodigy. They are all doing solo stuff now, and sadly I think Dom and Leyla are officially out of the band, but hopefully there will be a reunion. Check out the solo stuff. Rhiannon's work on the New Basement Tapes has gotten a fair amount of press, and Dom's Prospect Hill is great, but what really blew me away was Leyla's tribute to Langston Hughes, Vari-Colored songs. So so good.
(I like to pretend I'm on a first name basis with the band, but if I were to meet them I'd be all star-struck and agape)

Andrew Breslin I take liberties with people's first names as well. For me it is just a time saver with no intent of disrespect or creepy assumed familiarity...lol. I agree that they, as The Carolina Chocolate Drops, were an amazing combo....but ...I do think that they took it as far as they could go. They are so talented and creative individually that they just are not the type to stay in a stagnating pond. They gotta jump on that river and see where it takes them. I will be very exited to see where they end up next. I believe musicians into the American roots music movement are a familiar group one to another. The way I hear it, ...they run into each other at festivals and venues often. Here in St. Louis, it is familiar stomping grounds for them all. Our Pokey LaFarge is bringing so much notoriety to this type of music to our city that a fan base here is rapidly building. I truly hope this trend continues.

sharon walker Thanks for your comment! I agree completely. Hey, guess who is going to see Rhiannon Giddens perform the day after tomorrow in Philadelphia?????
This guy!!! (points at lucky self)
In a weird twist, Bela Fleck is also playing in the area on the very same night. So we've got two of the most entertaining banjo players on the planet and I, a shockingly mediocre banjoist, can only see one.
      (Sorry Bela. Maybe next time.)
And seriously: I don't think it's getting as much buzz as Rhiannon's new solo release, tracks from which I look forward to hearing on Friday, but Leyla's Vari-colored Songs is just phenomenal.

I feel bad for this band's sound person. Switching instruments all the time, everything miced, no pickups or direct inputs as with a keyboard or something, different vocal arrangements with all of them singing sometimes and just one other times. It must not be easy. On the other hand, I assume the band themselves rehearse completely acoustically with no amplification. The way it used to be. The way it should be more often. (Not always of course)
