  • A lot of you guys have been leaving comments asking what I think is the best speed feed trimmer head out right now. I wanted to show you guys the ECHO Speedfeed 400 trimmer head, which is what I've used the last 6-7 years.
    I know this may seem like a simple topic, but I still see a TON of folks replacing trimmer line the old fashioned way, by taking the top off and winding up the line. I think for a small investment of $20-$30, it's a good idea to look at a speedfeed trimmer head, to save you a ton of the frustration of replacing trimmer line.
    This is just my experience and what I've used over the last few years, and what head I think works the best for me. I'm curious to know if you guys use any other speedfeed heads out there, and if so, what brand/model? Leave me a comment down below!
    You should be able to pick up the ECHO Speedfeed 400 head at your local dealer, and may even at Home Depot. Check it out! It'll be a game changer if you're used to winding up your trimmer line the old fashioned way.
    If you guys want to pick up one of these Speedfeed heads from ECHO, here is a quick link for it on Amazon:

    By God's grace I stumbled upon your video.
    Just purchased the Makita 36V trimmer.
    Was pretty disappointed...until I replaced the brand new stock head with the 400.
    Wow. What a beast. Outstanding combination.

    Upgraded my Dewalt 20V DCST920 with an Echo Speed Feed 400 from Home Depot (local, here in Collingwood, ONtario). Easy to switch out directly, no need for all that included washer/spindle/nuts/bolts interface set that’s included. Most happy and grateful. I owe it all to the youtube content experts in this forum. Biggest thanks!

    My 14 year old just started a lawn mowing business. I'm helping him by running the line trimmer (our family's Stihl K91r). The Stihl accucut 25 head wasn't a problem... until it was. Long story short, down time dealing with a trimmer head in 98 degree heat and high humidity SUCKS. Just upgraded to the Echo speed feed head for my Stihl. So far I like it a lot.

    I always tap mine on the concrete. Now before you all start yelling and screaming at me, hear me out. I would rather wear my $7 replaceable speedfeed cap out a little faster then to put a divit in the grass of my customer.

    • @BriansLawnMaintenance
      @BriansLawnMaintenance  Před 6 lety +23

      True but if you’re skilled you should be able to tap on the grass without making that ring! (Not sayin you aren’t lol)

    • @johnthomas3460
      @johnthomas3460 Před 6 lety +17

      Doesn’t matter how much skill you have, if the grass is a little tall there will be a circle where the trimmer is bumped. I agree about the head, I’ve been using the speed feed for 10 years.

    • @thatrealba
      @thatrealba Před 6 lety +3

      A lot of that depends on the type of grass, how dry it is, and how high the idle is set on your trimmer

  • @cwiedner
    @cwiedner Před 5 lety +5

    I used these for about 3 years, but I finally went back to using the 25-2 on my Stihls. They fit flush, so when I get into taller grass and weeds it doesn’t get wrapped up between the gearbox and the head. I loved the speed feeds because it cut down on downtime reloading, but now I just keep an extra preloaded spool in my side pocket. It’s actually a little faster. And yeah, I hate cutting circles in grass bumping them, so I bump feed against whatever is wearing out my string (fence, sidewalk, etc).

  • @JsCrazyCutzLLC
    @JsCrazyCutzLLC Před 6 lety +16

    Speed Feed heads are the best thing since sliced bread :) Been in business over 20 years and back in the day I used to stop and take off the head cap and wind up the line and put it back together....sucked.Brian I do the same thing.On Sundays I cut several lines of about 18' per line,roll it up and I use a 4" piece of electric tape to keep each one rolled up tight and when I need one just pull it out of my back pocket peel off the tape and wind it up back in business in about 20 seconds

    First of all Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I bought a new Echo SRM 225. After two minutes the Bump head quit working. I took it apart and found the line was overlapping between the two sides and tangled on both. My solution was to buy a Shakespeare push and load four string head ($17 bucks) I have to replace the individual pieces as they wear out. Takes me 20 seconds to do this. I never had much luck with
    Bump Heads. My old Echo with the Shakespeare head is three years old and never gives a me a problem. The bump heads are nice in theory, I just don't have the passions to put up with them.

    We keep over a dozen Stihl spools pre-filled. If the property is large we take a quick peak to see if the trimmer is low before starting. Spools do not get swapped during a lawn, grab another trimmer an go, same goes for gas refills. The Stihl carbon line has also increased our productivity.

  • @gerryyoung202

    Just switched from Shakespeare Trimmer head, line kept binding inside head, hard to re-fill, to the Echo Sped Feed 400 along with Echo .095 Crossfire trimmer line. The difference and great performance is remarkable. Ease of installation on my Stihl FS56RC just added to the reason for switching.

  • @zerocool212121
    @zerocool212121 Před 6 lety +9

    Echo is the same as Shindi as they bought them out. Havent had any issues with those heads or the speed feeds from oregon (same copy). I dont think they can run anything over .105 fwiw. I also wouldnt go for the 450 for a light weight daily use, the smaller 400 or 375 holds less line but is noticeably lighter after a days use. Id perfer to have a light weight whip and a heavy duty for thick overgrowth.

    I've never had any problem with the Echo Rapid Loader head as long as you keep a handful of 8-inch precut in your pocket. I buy the Black Diamond 105 spool and cut it out accordingly during downtime. I'm going on 8 years with the same head.

  • @John-uj9zy

    Shindaiwa and Echo are both made by Yamabiko Corp. I have an Echo 2620 trimmer and a Shindaiwa T262. Both came with the Speedfeed 400. Exact same engine and gear case. Different controls. The Shindaiwa has a 20 inch swath vs 17. There's also an extra rubber bushing for vibration in the Shindaiwa's handle. Same price too...

  • @Godlimate
    @Godlimate Před 6 lety +2

    I invested quite a bit in a few different heads to experiment, and so glad that speed feed exists. Traditional bumper heads are a nightmare. And in my area everyone is using and telling me to use the alloy head that you replace nylon strips with. Yeah fucking right if I wanna bake in the sun all day replacing nylon strips.
    I started out with strips and also found them to be more expensive. Think about it. For every nylon strip you have finished using, about half (or more) of the nylon strip is discarded. You are wasting at least half of each nylon strip you use, that could easily equate to half a roll discarded!!!

    I bought apparently one of the last USA-made Core trimmers in the country--thanks to the cooties virus card. Upon first use, the Core`s line tended to snap at the inlet. I stop trimming. I spend considerable time trying to open the fool bump top to respool the blasted spool and end up eventually ordering some highly recommended Copperhead Vortex line instead. It worked for a whole, much better. Then IT began to snap at the inlet. Blue cloud time. Upon giving away the first line on Craig`s List and mentioning my frustration, a fellow 'listee' extolled the virtues of the Speed Feed head and he said he`s used it for 20 years. Gosh, it looks so simple! I`m about to order one based on his and your recommendation. Thanks.

    I've always liked the Echo Speed-Feed head. Any trimmers I have will always have one put on it if it doesn't have one. Every second can add up over the year even something as small as putting new weed eater line on weed eaters. Whatever makes you the most efficient.

    I just use whatever comes with my trimmer.... Surprisingly enough I actually don't have tons to trim.... I only have to refill my head maybe once or twice a week... Most of my lawns are laid out well with beds defined and such... I will prob pick up a couple of these heads next time I buy heads

      Man, around here, I don't know if there is a property in the metro area that doesn't have a decent amount of trimming. And most everyone wants edging. I never bought a stick edger, but I sure thought about it a lot.

    Buddy, you never have to buy another trimmer head or cap again!Just JB weld a piece of flat metal, flat bolt or something flat and metallic to the bottom so that whenever your guys bumper on cement or grass, it’ll never wear down

    I never got the chance to use other heads on my trimmers because my Stihl heads never broke or wore out over years of use. The Stihls I used when I got my first job at 14, it was probably my inexperience that wore out the heads. Putting in new line took maybe 2 minutes. Stihl trimmers or go home, for me. Power for DAYS. Nothing comes close and I have tried a lot of trimmers.
    That being said, my trimmers had to deal with use on my horse property in addition to its commercial use, so miles of fence line at home that wasn't cut even monthly, plus I did a lot of "yards" that were 4-8' tall, so I used steel blades for that and needed gobs of power. I don't think any other trimmer could handle that for long.
    I absolutely HATED my Echo blower and always hoped it would get stolen or something. I wished I had never bought it when I was in a hurry one day and didn't want to drive "all the way" to my Stihl dealer. It kind of soured me on all things Echo, but I admit that is not fair to Echo. The thing was hard to start after a month and it took FOREVER to warm up and hit max flow. My Toro dealer always wanted me to try other Echo stuff but I just couldn't do it. I probably would have replaced it with a RedMax, just for something different and the brand has a great rep, but never got a good enough reason to do it.
    I had a Shindaiwa walk-behind broadcast spreader built for ice melt. Dang thing cost like $300 but man it was built like a tank. My dealer didn't know how to pronounce it either, but all my equipment got nicknames anyway, so it didn't matter, ha!

    Late comer to the speed feed head. Thank you for that video, You found the Snizit !! Yah! I have landscaping business and that is a pet peeve of mine, Line breaking off to short or the and causing it to clog or the string melting inside of the bail that causes the down time. I use a Stihl Kombi KM 131 R (power head) then you can buy attachments, The FS-KM is the weed wacker attachment. Just in case someone has a Kombi system, this is what I found that should work. When I search on Amazon's (make sure this fits) I could bring up Stihl but not the FS-KM model, it would only bring up FS420 which is a deflector shield for the trimmer, OR it would bring up Farm Boss which are socks. After reviewing the different speed heads It looks that this one should fit my FS-KM String trimmer attachment, Oregon 55-265 Trimmer Head Speed Feed Straight, 4-1/2"

    I do like echo speedfeed 400 on STIHL fs110r and I do tap on smooth concrete but not rough concrete also tap on tree, pole, hard big strong fence as long it doesn’t look rough instead of tap on grass and look like scalp the grass unless grass is lower than 2” then I tap it on it and won’t notice it. I can see speed feed help a lot on 4 mix trimmers due lack of rpm, since 4 stroke use torque low end while 2 cycle use torque at higher rpm with speed that why 4 cycle are slower in similar displacement cc to 2 stroke counterpart. also help 2 stroke that under 1.2hp and for 21cc to 24cc.
