- Hey everyone Rho here! Today we're discussing the unique training of the Blood Angels Chapter! Why they do it, and how it shows the legacy of Sanguinius...
Spoiler Warning to begin as the events we're discussing today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novel "Dante" by Guy Hayley. As always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first, without spoilers! As that's the best way to enjoy the lore for yourself.

The Blood Angel lore is so much better when you know the Revenant Legion stuff
I’m going to share a story that just came into my mind. I was a soldier. I was not very good at much, but I excelled at soldiering. I had a ton of aggression and I was an athlete in HS. The army molded me into a weapon of destruction. I’m not glamorizing this at all. In fact, this costed me dearly when I got out of the military. The military spends a lot of time shaping young 18 year olds into weapons if you choose those jobs. I was combat arms, went to all the schools, and was part of ODA team. I wish the military would spend the time training soldiers to have an outlet like you see in the Dante novel. It is scientifically proven, and the military knows this. When you take young 18 year-old men and you shape them into aggressive, highly trained individuals before the age of 25 it becomes permanent. The male body frontal lobe isn’t developed until age 25. It took me Nine years to finally get my self under control. Yes, I wanted to be all of those things in the military. I didn’t want to be this person when I got out. I think that that is overlooked so much and could be easily taken care of by teaching soldiers to exercise hobbies like you see in the novel. I am a gardener now and I raise roses and the Pacific Northwest. I have long hair and if you saw me walking down the street you would think I’m some tree hugger hippie. I had to do that in order to find that inner peace
Some of the tragic beauty of the Great Crusade era, was that the Astartes was often able to develop hobbies, side-passions and generally live like people.
Ahriman cultivated Vine, the Blood Angels, Salamanders, White Scars, Space Wolves, Emperor's children and others cared about their culture, artistic pursuits and the small things....
So few current Astartes chapters retain these "human" traits anymore.
I feel like that's a problem with real world military too, they are taken out of their community and local culture and come back as strangers. Dantes approach would be a great benefit to modern soldiers and their communities when they return, I'm a veteran
@shady8366 would probably also change people's perception of the army too tbh
The first 40k novel audiobook I listened to was The Devastation of Baal, it made me admire the Blood Angels. Then I listened to Dante, and it made me love them.
It's a great novel, I read the book but I really want to listen to the audio book
It makes sense to address mental strength first. With the flaw, I feel like it's important not just to turn anyone into a space vampire
This made me so emotional. In the perspective of the red thirst being an analogy for depression or negative thoughts and black rage as an analogy as something harsher like hate, anger, or suicidal thoughts, the blood angels are such a great motivator to improve yourself as a person. Their's something to be said that the blood angels see it to be greater to sharpen the mind, heart, and soul first than to train in the art of hate and war. To fill one's mind with introspection and honor than prejudice and violence.
"Neophytes, lift your brushes, and remember: 2 thin coats."
6:26 that is the beauty of the Blood Angels, Sanguinius understood that they are more than just psycho-indoctrinated weapons, they can be more. That they must prepare for a time after the great crusade when the galaxy is at peace and the astrates are redundant they must become scholars, philosophers and leaders. It's a shame he would not see that future 😥
I wish Sanguinius would have opened up more to his brothers, like Guilliman. They were much more alike then either of them knew, both wanted more for their sons than being simple mindless weapons, to have a purpose post Great Crusade.
Glorious. Warhammer 40k content creators are realy next level.
Even though Dante and Mephiston have connections to the Sanginiour (haven't read all the lore yet) I like that they were still mostly regular men who ascended due to their strength, guile, and fortitude.
Dante has a deep connection to the Sanguinor, it saved his life in the deserts of Baal Secundus as he made his way to the city where candidates are gathered, and it saved him from failing the last trial before being ascended to Neophyte. The only time the Sanguinor spoke it was to reassure Dante that there was still hope against the advances of Hive Fleet Leviathan. Mephiston, on the other hand, had to connect with the psychic manifestation of the Black Rage in the Warp (shaped like a dark knight in constant battle against the Sanguinor, who represents the noble virtues of the Blood Angels) to survive while crossing the Rubicon Primaris.
Thank you. Very succinct. A 'very throw you into the water and swim' spiritual guidance philosophy.
Daunte is definitely paying back his loans, Sanginious not done with him yet.
@@Zappbrannigan83 Yeah, the whole ethos of 40k is "if you can't survive these extremely horrible and hostile conditions then you're WEAAAK". Ferrus' skost should be the official mascot (TTS reference)
The Blood Angels resemble the Emperor's Children in a few ways. Both chapters have generally pretty marines, high martial process, and admiration for art and music. However, the Blood Angels use music, art and martial skill as a form of discipline and focus. Conversely, the Emperor's Children practice their martial skills for pride, while art and music are for enjoyment.
And don't forget the White Scars (but it is natural for us to forget them, they prefer that anyway), at least during the Great Crusade era, each legionnaire has to pick an art form; calligraphy, poetry, painting and more.
I’ve seen that each chapter has 2-3 that overlap Ven diagram style with each other. I would say that the Blood angels mirror Night Lords(Vampy stuff) , Emps Children, (what you mentioned), World Eaters ( red and gold melee bloody boys)
Each chapter has their speciality and theme, BUT there is so much more character and depth for each one
@@ianporcaro1874 I see the Blood Angels overlapping with the Space Wolves, World Eaters and Emperor’s Children.
I reckon that considering their bloodthirsty nature and fondness for close quarter combat, offsetting that with training in art and culture is a smart move. And probably why the Blood Angels, despite often giving their allies nightmares in their brutal style of fighting, are still considered in high regards by everyone. Violence without control never ends well. Case in point the Flesh Tearers. Also, when all you see is death and loss, that tends to create a very dour grimdark mindset. It needs to be offset with reminders of the finer things in life, the best things that humanity has to offer, to remind you why you fight for humanity.
Pulled a Guilliman and came late
Better than coming too early…
Ouch
@@eonstar2441 MAGNUS!
Best comment I’ve read in a while. Thank you sir
Technically, as of the End and the Death Part 1, Guilliman's relief force arrived in time. Unfortunately, the loyalist forces did not know it and boarded the Vengeful Spirit.
Your regiment just got reinforced by the Blood Angels
😀
They just called you Horus..
☹️
"Sir, General, sir, don't Blood Angels wear red armour? These marines have black armour with red saltires on their pauldrons. Maybe they're Black Templars? They're running this way, should we ask them?"

It's a successor chapter
🤨
It's the Flesh Tearers
😱
Yes. The Flesh Tearers paint.

I found your channel about a month ago and I have to say you’ve become my favorite WH40k channel by far. So thanks for making this amazing content.
I'd love to see a piece on what the Primarchs would have done if the HH never happened - it was a core reason Horus gave for starting the rebelion - that the emperor would cast the Primarchs aside after the war was won
I find that hard to believe considering that the webway project wouldn't have ended their conflicts with any race nor the threat of chaos.
The existence of threats from outside the galaxy makes Horus' fears irrelevant.
@@similaritiesendhere Remember Horus didn't even know about the webway project. He just cited the Thunder Warriors. Claiming the Primarchs were clearly made for war, and that the crusade wouldn't last forever
@@TheGlingfram Horus knew enough to understand that a galaxy without a need for warriors was a pipe dream.
His thinking at this point reeks of chaos corruption similar to Fulgrim's delusions. He even shows the ability to snap out of it temporarily similar to Fulgrim right before being destroyed.
It's simply not logical. The best case scenario for the Imperium is humanity fortifying the galaxy against infinite outside threats (Tyranids).
@@similaritiesendhere and that's what I'm suggesting. Without the HH, where could the story have gone?
@@TheGlingfram Between the god-like tech of the Necrons, an entire galaxy infected by Ork spores, and threats from outside of the galaxy (Tyranids and the rest of the universe)..., humanity would've been doomed to a grimdark future just fine.
The main reason for the HH probably had to do more with table top gameplay than lore (giving players a lore excuse for Astartes vs Astartes matches).
Angels of Darkness, the 2nd edition army book was my first book because I loved the DA and the Blood Angels. Such an awesome book
The reason is simple to be the well rounded warrior.
Can't wait to see the artwork of the Blood angels. Just imagine all those macaroni pictures.
The art room was my favorite part of Dante. "Forgiveness is not for our enemies, but for ourselves" -Brother Caphael.
Another awesome video, Rho! Listening to this, I couldn't help but think about these neophytes training in performance arts like acting, improv, and interpretive dance lol.
I knew the Blood Angels valued the patience and skill involved in artistry, similar to the pre-heresy Emperor's Children, but I was actually really surprised they would begin their training with a whole month of studying in the arts. I would have guessed they would start with a deep dive into battlefield tactics, strategy, hand-to-hand and blade combat, etc. Very interesting look into the Blood Angels.
I didn’t even know the BA existed. My intro to 40k was a paperback ravenguard book I found in a box while deployed in Iraq. When I came home I was omg the BA are my love. The ravenguard holds a very special place in my heart. But I had that rage in me, my battle brothers used to say when I was mad it was a special thing to see. I moved faster, was stronger, and a animal. I don’t know if that was just the adrenaline or battle endorphins changing there perception but I felt the same just full of rage.
The five graces could be easily applied to an artist , as well as common people . Practice and apply brothers of the angel.
The other applications will embark you on the path of the Renaissance man , learn ,enjoy and give back freely in humility .
Excellent work here !!
thank you for highlighting the incredible Lore of the Blood Angels!
Imperium Nihilus Command, Sanguinor and Dark Angel, Black Rage and Red Thirst and more!
It is definitely one of the best written factions and with deep Lore.
I love 40K too my Wolf Lord, thank you for the video n the knowledge within.

*Master:* Thin your paints.
*Neophyte:* W-what was that master?
*Master: T H I N Y O U R P A I N T S ! ! !*
I would say pre heresy emperors children and probably custodes would dedicate equal if not more time to other things besides war
The Blood Angels are one of the few Chapters who stayed as true to Sanguinius teaching as they could. Honorable warriors who use hobbies to temper their rage underneath.
My Boyz!!🩸🤘🏻For Sanguinius!! Great video as alwayz brother🔥💪🏻🔥
as I read more lore, I still think it was an amzing luky choice to go with BA as my first ever and biggest army
Do you think Sanguinius saw far enough into the future to see what becomes of his legion and sons after his death?
Most likely, he aparently always knew his death, so whos to say he didnt look further in the future
He saw the Tyranids coming for baal so yeah he saw for sure.
@@emirhaneksioglu4503 Then it underscores even more what Rho was talking about in this video. Sanguinius died knowing his sons would be cursed; therefore it's possible he made the training of the Angels in anticipation of what was to follow.
We know Sanguinius saw the arrival of the Tyranids and someone in a golden mask, presumably Dante, fighting in the throne room against Chaos and the Tyranids. That prophecy no longer holds since the Tyranids didn’t take Baal but the point is, Sanguinius saw 10,000+ years into the future.
Thanks for the video
Sanguinius is my second favorite primarch and 4th favorite imperial character behind:
1. Malcador the Hero
2. The King in Yellow
3. Vulkan
Who is the king in yellow?
@@Silver_Crow2295 Constantin Valdor, the first custdian ever created, now hidden somewere in the Galaxy plotting, but no one knows what or why
At 6:41 I’m just trying to imagine an astartes sized paintbrush. I’m pretty sure it’s still lethal enough to defend the imperium
Im a BA collector/player. I love 'em. Have done since 2nd
To hold them to their humanity. An anchor to pull against the Thirst and the Black Rage.
I think the Salamanders have a unique setup. The take care of their own gear, cool, nothing too strange with that. But, they also live among normal citizens on their home planet. If a gene-line is found between Marine and civilian, there is some try to keep families close by. Plenty of chapters have positive interactions with common folk, but Salamanders up that by a factor of 'kewt x HUGS!'
Merci pour cette vidéo super intéressante,
L'entraînement des Blood Angel me fait quand même beaucoup penser à celui des Custodes, vous ne trouvez pas ?!?
It is a reminder of their essential humanity even in the face of such monstrous inner darkness.
Great Work to Flesh Out The Blood Angels to a New fan
I can imagine the guy from adeptusridiculous trying to argue that night lords skinning babies is somehow “art”
I actuelly got a inquisition book/saw space marine and dawn of war 2 chaos riseing on steam 1st,
i read a little bit for the biggening of the book/what it was about.
I started my Salamander training on the forge, I'm also red-green colorblind so don't ask me to paint a damned thing.
I can beat you a hammer on the forge, but I cannot paint you a Monet
Classical education baby
I was wondering if it says anywhere how long the combat between Sanguinius and Horus lasted?
My take: 25 minuts 12 seconds (fight itself) - overall interaction 1h :30 If we take the moment Sangui met Horus on the Ship
FIREEEE
BROTHER BOBROSSINI WAS ADDRESSING THE NEOPHYTES WHILE.STANDING IN FRONT OF HIS EASEL....
HE SPOKE...;
" so yeah today you're just going to paint what is in one of your heart you know and you can use whatever color you choose and you can just flow with it and you know just do whatever you like just have fun with it but there's a couple colors were going to stay away from we're going to stay away from the red you know the red is Harsh and yeah we're not going to do the red and we're also going to stay away from black today you know it's it's a dark space and we don't need any of the chaplains coming in here and you know looking at our art and maybe taking somebody to the tower cuz they don't give you paint in the tower and then the only other painting you're going to have to do is to your armor we're going to paint it all black and nobody wants black armor do they?
Squat! We're not supposed to call him that as it's not proper anymore they're supposed to be called votan but we're going to keep that happy little squat you're my secret it'll be just between the two of us! Now you get out there and you draw all the happy little towel tyranid xenos and all of their little skulls that you want lots of happy skulls lots of happy Servo skulls cuz all that does what? It's a happy little Emperor if we ever Paint The Golden Throne we can put some happy little custodian while standing around😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Guillemin always wanted his Ultramarines to survive past the Great Crusade and morphed into statesmen away from soldiers.
Also the Blood Angels: Lets have our trainees kill each other in to-the-death games of capture the flag!
Ok gonna paint my marines as Blood Angels from now on
I feel like this is a problem with real world military too, they are taken out of their community and local culture and come back as strangers. Dantes approach would be a great benefit for modern soldiers and the communities they return to.
I'm a veteran
They make it so they paint instead of the black rage?=research,
it would make sense saying "a light and dark sides because you need dark to have light."if it was a max derret video thing.
Probably space wolves but that would be drinking.
👍
Keeping your culture is just as important as knowing war. It's the problem of KLINGONS.
Listen to this guy in 1.25 speed you wont go back

Sanguinius actually did kill Horus and the Emperor had to put him down...
Except the siege of Terra books will probably end this theory
Hence the black rage at being turned on by the Emperor, even if justified as he was a danger to everything. Interesting theory, I've not heard that before but it would explain a few things, but I'm sure it'll get ended by the new novels. As nice a theory as it is, it does somewhat downplay the tragedy of Sanguinius's sacrifice and the battle with Horus, still knowing he wouldn't win but doing it anyway to buy time for the Emperor and to make a crack in Horus' armour.
