Why ride out a storm at sea? Because it's suicide for a vessel to stay in port when a hurricane approaches. Any vessel, particularly a large ship, would take major damage if moored next to a pier from the storm surge, wind, and waves, assuming it didn't break free from the pier and drift into worse areas. Anchoring isn't feasible in such conditions. That's why all ships able to get underway when a storm approaches do so, as it's easier and safer to ride it out at sea.
I was on Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas, on my honeymoon. The last night of our cruise we got hit hard. At 4AM I woke up as the ship was riding down a huge wave. Drinking glasses smashed as the ship rumbled and creaked through the wave. We were on level 6 and the water was coming in under the glass doors. Gave us quite a scare. Never thought I'd get sea sickness on a 800ft vessel.
The Queen Mary 2 is no ordinary cruise ship it's an ocean liner the last of it's kind designed specifically to withstand heavy Atlantic storms out of all the ships I think the Queen Mary 2 has the greatest chance of survival in a storm.
my advice on taking a trip out on a boat in a bad weather is to find some where to lay down and you should be Okay i was on a boat going to Scotland to see Celtic Vs Hibernian and the weather was rough so i found a nice comfy spot to lay down and when i woke up i heard a lot of people got sick and even little children were getting sick so if you feel sea sick just find a nice comfy spot to lay down and go to sleep you should feel fine after awhile oh yea another thing i recommend is Not to Buy food i made that mistake

Engineering-wise, QM2 is much more seaworthy because of her design. Her lifeboats are higher up, her shape cuts through the waves better because of the flare it has. It was adapted from the QE2 and the Normandie. There is literally a video of the Symphony of the Seas’ Pool water getting splashed all over the boardwalk/Central Park due to the waves. That’s never happened on the QM2. However QM2 has handled hurricane force winds with grace, where a Quantum-class ship nearly sunk due to lower force waves and winds. Lol
