Interesting how 2 billionaires RAY DALIO & WARREN BUFFETT say two different things. Warren claims *_"Diversification is a protection against ignorance. It makes very little sense for those who know what they're doing"_* . Buffett says you only need 3 good companies!....and then we have Dalio who loves diversification....how can 2 billionaires be right? Which camp do you fall in to? Food for thought :)
To find 3 good companies you have to fail in 100 other ones. Dalio's view makes much more sense to the everyday investor.

I think the degree of diversification needs to be correlated with the quantity and quality of research you've done as well. If you've done extremely deep research for, say, 6 companies, I believe it's fine to have just 6 stocks/cryptos in your portfolio. If not, you might need some more. Personally I had like 30 stocks and am now trying to cut it down to

I would agree with the research part but the quantity of trades you should have in your portfolio should be based on your captial and the market environment.

There are so many dimensions to diversify: asset classes (e.g. stock, real estate, commodities), positions within an asset class (e.g. tech stock, 2 houses, copper and soy), location (e.g. EU, Korea) and time (cost average effect, ETF savings plan).
The real difficulty is to balance these right (All Weather / risk parity portfolio) and to use leverage to increase risk back to acceptable levels and improve returns (difficult for private investors).
Question: How do you measure risk, with what metric?

i think he meant uncorrelated asset classes , most stocks are highly correlated , uncorrelated would be bonds, commodities, precious metals, sometimes crude oil, natural gas ect... not 15-20 stocks

So some understand this video is demonstrating how you would measure the volatility in your portfolio. SIDE NOTE where risk is it would actually be "volatility" . Covariance, correlation and weightings. This is actually taught in ITPM. If your curious on who they are just look up their CZcams channel.
Now to sum this up. Its actually better to also use options. Options alone will help you reduce risk if structure correctly. Also you have to make sure your quality of trades is of high standards and you also need to be in the right market cap. Theirs more opportunities in lower cap stocks compared to mega.

if only standard deviation made any sense as a measure of risk (it makes more and more sense as the investment horizon becomes shorter)

They don't exist. No such thing as stocks with sufficiently low or negative correlations to implement this. That is not what Dalio is about at all, but about using alternatives.
Hasn't worked out so well for Bridgewater this year.
They are not looking within a year, rather decades
This portfolio is better for people who already have tons of money. If you are younger with way less money then go for high growth and more risk like tech and innovation

Ray Dalio's book "Principles" is where he discusses this in detail.
He is also supposed to release a book called investment principles in the near future
8:20 Ray Dalio doesn't only mean POSITIVE correlation, but I assume he also includes NEGATIVE correlation?

Exactly, and most people don't, so that's why Buffet recommends low cost index funds to people like 99% of everyone watching and commenting on a video like this.
Buy stocks and buy more cryptos too, have invested into both and I found out that crypto investment is far better than stocks

Both investments are good to go into but if profit must be considered then crypto is far better.
Investing in different streams of income that do not rely on the government to bring in money especially with the pandemic going on would be the wisest decision any individual can make

At the beginning of your video, you are keep making the common mistake of switching between the terms "assets" and "stocks". Stocks are only one type of an asset class. The conclusion that you make at the end of your video, where you recommend holding stocks because they give high historically returns completely misses Dalio's point. It will be hard to find uncorrelated stocks because, for example, during a crash they are highly correlated. Also you can get the same return on bonds with the same risk as stocks by using leverage.
This is correct. Look up Dalio's own video on the Holy Grail, where he notes that you could have 10,000 stocks and not get below that top line because all stocks are highly correlated on this scale.

That makes things more confusing. How do you own 15-20 different assets if 1 can only be stocks. Seems like the strategy to go if you're a multi millionaire or billionaire to preserve wealth, but for the average person to expend their energy on this.... I don't know. Also you're correct about all stocks being highly correlated during corrections. We're seeing that now. It doesn't matter if your stock is from US or Japan, tech or consumer products - it's all falling.
@@k4ir0s there are a lot of fintech apps about nowadays that let you own fractions of different asset classes - farming land, collectibles, forestry, fine art, equity crowdfunding (aka startups), (EDIT - also classic cars) etc. These apps provide more opportunities to invest across different asset classes than were available a few years ago. Then there are also ETFs for soft commodities, precious metals, energy, real estate, Bitcoin, etc. And my personal favourite uncorrelated asset class that’s relatively new - carbon credits ETFs ;-)

Really not true. Dalio have outperformed the S&P500 by 4% to 5% on a yearly basis over the last 28 years.
@@bobthebellyflop3276 But those monsters invest millions, so 4 or 5% of millions is a lot, But for example investing 500, then 5% is 25$. We would be better investing in a few companies that we believe on with more money so the percentage is higher
@@Josue.ab7 Don't matter how much you investing. If you beat the market by 4 or 5% every year you are getting phenomenal returns. The Charlie Munger approach - with owning a few companies that you know everything about is obviously a good approach, personally I'm just to lazy knowing everything about 4 or 5 companies. To much work.
I've thought about it for years. I've come to the conclusion that if your investment comes in the form of a ticker symbol it's not safe from sudden massive loss of value. PERIOD. People get scared and it's simply click> SOLD. click>SOLD. Doesn't matter what stock, reit or commodity it is. If you can buy and sell it via a TICKER SYMBOL it's going DOWN.

Yeah, you did not get the lesson here unless you can find 15-20 stocks with correlation coefficients of less than 0.60. Which you will not be able to do. Almost all stocks have correlations above 0.8.
So stop looking for more stocks and start looking at other asset classes entirely. Use a correlation matrix to put numbers on it. If you fixate on equities, you will never be able to implement this strategy. Just pick a few decent low-cost equity funds and be done with that side of it. Spend most of your time researching the alternatives.

It's almost about that Time of the year where Bitcoin gets to Sky Rocket, so many people are ignorant, they are staying on the sideline, waiting for a move up and the right time to get in.
