  • Myanmar’s newly democratic government has banned the export of raw timber, to help fight deforestation. But that has idled thousands of the elephants that toil in the logging industry.

the 10 year ban on logging has indeed put many elephants "out-of-work". And these 2000+ huge "out-of-work-workers" have a huge appetite. They cannot be set free into tnow has he jungles becos, the jungles are becoming smaller and neighbouring China developed a palate for elephant meat/elephant trunk, so these gentle/doemsticated " workers" would become easy targets for hunters. How do you care for out-of-work -workers with huge appetites. the solution is to open up their camps, where they lived/worked to local and international tourists. It is an amazing experience to go to these elephant camps where you can come into close contact/feed/pet these gentle giants. Help our huge workers by visiting them!!

Take a lesson from Chang Mai in Thailand. There are a lot of tourists interested in seeing Elephants living in a managed area but living as elephants, not begging or logging. I don't doubt the owners will find employment for their animals.

Sending them back to nature will become human -elephant conflicts worse. They are not wild ones so they cannot live in wild environment. Then they will live near villages and would destroy crops. It is not a solution.

sorry m Dixon,..your just wrong. unless you are a vegetarian,.eg: you don't eat 'enslaved cows'. ive spent 2 months in Myanmar,..and many more in countries that use elephants, and beasts of burden such as water buffalo to pull plows, and burro's to carry supplies over mountains. humans would not have evolved the way we have without them . treat them well,..show them love and respect. that is the responsibility of all 'human animals'.
