  • Here we are with the program Yaadein once again in which we have Dr. Aniruddh Chandorkar talking to us about Raag Bihag and illustrating it with some fine examples of film and non-film music.
đŸŽ” Raag Bihag is a Hindustani classical raga belonging to the Bilawal thaat. It is typically performed during the late evening and up to midnight.
Bihag uses all seven music swaras (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni).
Both Shuddha Madhyam (natural fourth) and tivra Madhyam (sharp fourth) are used. The Shuddha Madhyam is more prominent, while tivra Madhyama appears in phrases like PA MA’ GA MA GA.
Arohana (Ascending scale): ‘Ni Sa Ga ma Pa Ni Sa’
Avarohana (Descending scale): ‘Sa’ Ni (Dha) Pa Ma Pa Ga ma Ga Re Sa’
Nishad (Ni) is a prominent note; alaps or taans often start from this note.
Raag Bihag portrays moods of joy and romance, making it a common choice for celebratory occasions and romantic expressions.
đŸŽ” Raag Bihag, also called “Bihag,” is a popular late-evening raga in Hindustani classical music. Although it’s not as common in semi-classical genres, it holds a special place in classical music.
Raag Bihag belongs to the Bilawal thaat.
It draws aspects from a more common raga called Bihag.
The raga centers around the shuddha Madhyam (vadi) and Ni (samavadi), but this can vary.
The mood of Raag Bihag is celebratory and romantic, making it a common choice for occasions like marriages.
