The 1988 Australian Touring Car Championship was a CAMS sanctioned motor racing title for drivers of Group 3A Touring Cars. It was the 29th running of the Australian Touring Car Championship. Promoted as the “1988 Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship”, it began on 6 March at Calder Park Raceway and ended on 17 July at Oran Park Raceway after nine rounds. On May 29, Round 7 was held at Sandown.
"A dry/wet qualifying session left Miedecke on pole from Bowe, after rain cost Johnson a chance at beating the OXO driver's lap. However, Miedecke's pole was for naught, as the clutch gave up on the run to the first corner..." - William Dale Jr.

It is so good to see there were more cars than the Ford Falcon and Opel Omega racing.

Andrew Miedecke must have been the unluckiest guy in Group A at the time. He was a quick driver in probably the 3rd quickest Sierra after the DJR cars and yet he couldn't get the best of it. There is the suggestion that in the drive for speed he didn't have the money for anything else.

Was it Mike Raymond that set up the fund for Dick Johnson after the rock incident??? Respect if it was

Just out of curiosity, this is the 2nd time the 1988 Sandown ATCC round is uploaded. I know there is a bit of difference re. opening commentary but just like to know why. Cheers.

Even though i am a Ford fan, Larry Perkins Commodore looks and sounds good, the Sierra,s perform well but reliability of the turbo engine seems questionable. What the BMW M3 lacks in power can be made by fantastic handling and braking, tracks like Sandown, Bathurst etc suit the cars which have good power.
Geez man at 38m.30s the Nissan tire change, that guy could have lost a few fingers! NOT GOOD!

kenny8ism He was unwell for a long time which is why he stopped commentaries. Last time I have heard he is on the mend but was ordered to 'take it easy.'.

dj17q Thanks for that. Not surprised, let's just say he really did like those hot dogs. I've never seen anyone eat so many in one sitting! Hope he's better, seemed a nice guy

And how many hot dogs did he eat?

Had a great voice, but not the deep knowledge & understanding of the sport required for the job.
