what's better silicon roof sealing or rubber roof sealing?
We do not endorse this installation. Tape won't stick if not properly prepped AND tape is not a long term solution.
Silicone and duct tape works great you don't need any of it expensive nonsense I just taped the seams and put silicone all over it looks fine and will work great b****
Thank you, I am a 59 year old woman living in my 1997 RV and I love it, I watched your video on painting the roof and it helped me so much, thanks, Happy Holidays to you and yours 💜
My grandparents gave me there 93 skyline nomad. It doesn’t leak now they had it renovated but just in case! Thanks bud.
Been living fulltime in a rv for almost 20 years. Welcome to the lifestyle.
That's awesome!!! Where are you located and what type of RV do you have?
Same people wonder why i dont have a house but ive been living in mine so long its my home
Thanks for the video Honest Lee. I'm wanting to seal my work trailer and I'll probably use this. Appreciate you sharing. Hope the debt free journey brings you to your desired destination!
Hey that's a great idea! This will work on any roof so good plan! Thanks! So far everything is working great! I appreciate your comment!
Painting ours today. Pressure washed a few days ago, and applying tape now. Wish us luck!! Thanks for the vid.
Best of luck!!!
Approximately how much was it per gallon?
Right on man I just bought some Eternabond tape!
Fantastic video! Thanks!
Your very welcome!
This is so awesome! Congratulations on your journey to being debt free!
Im a flat roofer. I would recommend powerwashing before coating the roof. I would also recommend using 2.5 gallons per 10ftx10ft area
power washing an RV roof would rip it off, not a wise thing
@@williambalyx1053 adjustment to pressure not to destroy but to clean.
Power washing an rv really isn't a good thing to do , it causes water to get in strange places, don't do it.
When can I run my ac after sealing? I can’t find info on this anywhere. I’m in Texas so it’s hot lol
I'm a roofing contractor. We always powerwash the single ply roofs pior to applying a coating system. If the membrane cannot take a cleaning, it shouldn't be coated, but removed and a new single ply system applied. Coatings have there place, but not over a worn out dilapidated roof.
Great job on explaining how to apply the roof coating.

Got a 2007 nomad trailer just found a leak an didnt know what to do so thank you so much for this video❤️
The reason you scrub and wash your RV roof before you coat is 1 you want a really clean surface for it to adhere to( it will bubble up and detach from the surface over time) and 2 so you don't roll your dirt all through your coating(makes for unprofessional Grey and black swirly patterns in the coating).
How do I apply the coatingg then do I brush it on
Cleanliness is next to Godliness
@@michaelf.3846 did you not watch how he applied it in the video?
It also appears he applied the tape before sweeping even ! That can't be good.
As a rv tech, I cringe at some of the things I see people do to their rigs…this being no exception.
Thanks for this video : )
Nice video, so helpful to see the process and have links to the products used. Thank you!
Awesome. Take advantage of the ability to be mobile and explore the US. I know campgrounds are looking for handymen and sometimes let you stay free if you work while there. I plan on going fill time but my wife's job has the medical benefits so it is our long term plan. Excites to follow the journey.
Hey that's awesome Kevin! Thanks for following along! I am super excited for this journey!!!
I was advised to use a rubber coating on the roof of a cargo trailer i was hoping to turn into a home.
But im likely buying a travel trailer to turn into a full time home, and need to winterize it and reinforce the roof.
Either way im going to be doing this, so i appreciate the video.
'sup dood?! Just got done peeling the membrane off our '01, it was trashed! Now to get some new fittings, tape, trim, skylight, patch material....
Hi what materials do you recommend when switching out the roof due to a bad leak in front and back
Guys like this keep us busy! See you soon.
The concern I have is a lot of people want to be CZcams stars and show folks how to do repairs. Folks tend to trust them...well of course, they got a CZcams channel....and then the repairs fail and cause more damage. If any product you intend to use says RV on it.... DON'T USE IT!
So what would you use to reseal a roof?
@@justinhc123 Carlisle makes Dicor. Carlisle is a major player in the roofing game. They also make a SS elf leveling product. I would use that instead of the cheap Dicor. The caulk is a commercial grade lap sealant. You should be able to find it at your local commercial supply house.
@@RVROOFINSTALL thank you!
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
What about teardrops with and aluminum sheets?
Hi it looked like your didn't use any cleaner before applying the paint, is it not required for this product?? Thanks for your response and video Mike
Should you use henry tropicool on the slide outs? That's what I did since its a roof that sticks out almost all the time when parked. Its a bit too late to ask, but is that good?
I've got a 03 jayco legacy tandem AXLE 5fifth wheel RV with 4 slide outs I started on the rubber roof my roof looks good but I'm going to paint it before this winter 2022
💪💪💪
I would put an air handler on the gable end, pull the heat out.
Very very important to clean / dry sweep .
The only way to guarantee 💯 % adhesion.
Maybe ?
I just don't know.
How do you do the side of the roof. Like the 3" of the roof cap that is on the side of the rv
How long does it take to dry with the first coat?
Cool Beans
Good job, so you painted roof edge with brush?
I’ve always wondered why trailer manufacturers don’t just put one big sheet of aluminum on the roof. Instead of a rubber membrane that eventually wears out. Most people would gladly pay extra for that!
Weight. Older RVs actually had aluminum roofs but they added a bit of weight up high vs the rubber membranes.
@@TyphoidSnaily Not weight as much as cheap
Newer ones have better roofs. Older ones were built so cheap that they couldn’t handle having weight on em.
@@TyphoidSnaily not the weight at all. There a many campers that have the hard shell roof.
They do
I have a 1987 wildwood I'm needing to seal the roof.
Can you use this over TPO on the slide outs
Can you use mobile home trailer top silver tar coating?
Did you use the roof seal on the slide too?
Same steps for conversion top Van ?
hi, i just bought the same rubber liquid, and i found a primer (Yellow contenant.same brand) so what do you suggest me please, do i need a primer before the coating ? Thank you
Will just washing with a mitt and using Dawn dishwashing liquid clean a roof good enough?
I'm seeing that the coating you used insists on a primer for EPDM rv roofs. But you didn't use a primer. I'm curious if it's truly necessary.
go ahead and go ahead
Looks Great, what is a typical price range for this service on a 15 foot travel trailer.
Is a pop out done the same way? Thank you so much for posting! ❤❤❤❤❤
Does this work on a tin roof with pitch also?
It’s almost like flex seal. But probably works better
My rv is 1999 holiday rambler we just purchased this and do we paint over the original or what do we do when we go about this?
Thoughts on how this would hold up on a trailer that sees extensive towing.?
It would hold up great, the paint is made for RV roofs!
Can these sealants be used on a TPO membrane?
Would a wide squeegee work as well as a roller?
I have a metal roof. Will this process work.
Can I use undercoating to stop leaks
Used this, cleaned well with the pre cleaner, then the RV rubber roof products and its been peeling for 3 years, it's a mess!
What made you choose that brand of roof sealant?
I plan on doing this to my 2020 Rockwood 5th wheel this summer after I developed separation right behind the front fiberglass shield. Plan on keeping the old vinyl roof on as I’ve stabilized it with eternal bond tape and aluminum thresholds, does it make a difference what type of vinyl it has as to the rubber sealant. Also, I heard a hot sealant (whatever that is?) is better. Is your roof still holding up?
How do I get the old spray foam off?
Hengs is the best,
How is your RV roof now? I didn’t see you had primer on. Thanks advance if you update this.
How hot or warm does the outside temp need to be for one to seal coat their Motorhome Roof ? Does it need to be a warm temp, hot temp ? I live in Central Delaware, and am in the process of paying off a 1991 Fleetwood Flair 22 foot Motorhome. I noticed that the wind has recently wreaked havoc with the outer edges of the roof, so I was wondering if the roof can be coated while the outside temps are in the mid to upper 40's to low or mid 50's, or if the outside temps need to be much warmer for the seal coat to dry properly ? I am planning on getting some really large size tarps to throw up over the Roof and tie down until I can get the roof properly seal coated.
If your RV is more than 5 years old, I would buy new skylights, etc because they will be getting a littl yellowed and brittle by then. Easier to replace before you seal for life.
With most trailers made these days it’s a losing battle trying to keep them water tight. They’re not made to last like the old Air Streams.
@@thenoneckpeoplerepresentat8074 air streams are literally built differently, they use an aluminum exterior, and at seams use a special type of lap sealant, that does eventually fail, even older ones, cause they use the same build style as when they started the business decades ago, now these roll on style sealers are junk, any time one shows up at the shop for a new roof, especially when they have flex seal, i charge nearly double for a roof, that stuff sucks, as far as eternabond, it has its applications, but using it in place of lap seal will eventually wear down the bond and a leak will occur
@Keyzer Soze eternabonds place is for slideout seam, works great in that application because you can operate slide and not worry about it getting everywhere like dicor, self level dicor on top of roof, pro flex and non sag dicor for sides of RV, think of windows, compartment doors ext. The one to stay completely away from is silicone, it does not bond to rubber and in my experience has not lasted the way pro flex has.
Sp its ok to walk pn the roof? I always thought RV roof would collapse with weight on it
Roofer here step one is power wash the roof off 😂 and that's why I get so much work from people who hired a "handyman" to fix their roof!
You’re not supposed to pressure wash an rv roof.
@@David-hn5ry oh please, you do understand that pressure washers have different tips? Yeah you don't want to use a powerful tip, heck you don't even have to pressure wash it but at least wash it with soap and water and a hose! You don't want to put a coating over a layer of dirt, that is just plain stupid!
@@2agunguy5 yea no shit but you don’t pressure wash an rv roof. PERIOD

hey break 1 9er!!! or is that cqcqcq?
Paint then tape and then paint it again.how that sound ?
what size roller and what kind of roller did you use
Do you also put the rubberized coating on the top of the slide outs?
Yes definitely!
Will this work for tpo roof
How many proof was the denatured alcohol 100? 200 proof?
I am surprised you didn't clean the surface before putting on the coating. I would think after a while it would start to peel off.
It says to give it 2 to 3 coats that would mean 15 gallons for my 30 foot 5th wheel correct?
Thanks for the great video! Question, if you have to replace any of the sky lights like the one over the bathroom, how difficult is it to replace if you have taped it and rubberized it? What issues would the introduce if any?
I believe it would be fairly easy to cut the tape and replace the unit and then re tape after
I don't have a RV but I will do this if I should ever own one - thanks
-Tom f4collector
Hey your welcome Tom! I was really pleased with how it turned out with the tape and then the painting!
Hi... thanks for sharing your experience... I have a 89 RV/motor home built with Alloy on the outside with multiple joints from the roof down.. every joint has a weather strip.. with a rubber seal to the body and centre strip over the screws. I have had a fairly serious leak down one side and used silicone to try and stop it.! It may not have worked! If it has not what of any product could I put under the weather strip to prevent leaks? Thanks in advance 👍🏻
Silicone caulking does not work on the exterior of an RV! If you really want to cover over screw holes, try 3M 5200 it’s marine grade caulking. But really what you might want to do even before that is to remove that entire piece of track/and put new butyl tape between the track and the RV. And then replace the screws, & if you think u need too use 3M 5200 to cover the screws, it’ll work better than anything else. And if you’re ever desperate for a temporary leak fix, grab a spray can of “roof leak stop” (any brand will work) I have used a couple different brands I got at Lowe’s. Also, Eternabond tape is magic. Keep it handy for unexpected leaks. Just be sure to get the actual brand and not a knock off. Ask me how I know, ha!
Having used these products on a motorhome several years ago I can say that 1) Liquid Rubber and Eternabond are both excellent products.
2) You MUST scrub the roof absolutely and completely CLEAN! Sweeping alone is NOT adequate.
Failure to do so will cause your new coating to delaminate from the original roofing material leading to failure and leaks.
I have also worked on an RV roof which had been treated with Liquid Rubber without proper cleaning, that's how I know it will delaminate if not cleaned well enough.
Also, there are obvious wrinkles in the original rubber roofing indicating it is no longer bonded to the roof in those areas. This should be rectified before you coat with the Liquid Rubber. Cut a slit and reglue, then cover the slit with Eternabond. Re-coating a loose roof will be useless if it tears and peels going down the road.
How is it holding up
I can not believe that you did not wash the roof?
AMEN Randy!!!
Can you use acetone to clean or wipe the roof?
I never reccomend that tape around items that need to be replaced. Fans ACs skylights because if they break and you need to replace them the tapes a pain to remove. I use the tape for caps and sides of the roof and slide roofs
Did you put it on the slideouts?
I would REALLY like to see what this roof looks like in a few years, especially around where the tape was coated with the roof paint.
Don’t worry, it won’t take a few years.
Yeah wouldn't a silicone caulk work much better? Tape seems kinda dumb
@@garrettjones8017 sillicone breaks down in sunlight, use dicor lap sealant
@@coler154 OK cool I'll check it out! Gotta do this for a customer soon appreciate the tip
@@garrettjones8017 Actually, there are silicone sealants made for exterior use. Many of the manufacturers are now using silicone sealants on the roofs. In addition there are now silicone coatings for commercial buildings. Eterna-kote is a 100% silicone roof coating and is recommended for RV applications. Can be purchased at several retailers.
What did you do for the ends of the travel trailer where the roof meets the front panel? Tape over it and then paint over? Or did you do something else?

I'd love to do this myself, but I'm concerned about weight (me) being on the roof. I'm about 250lbs, but even you (who seems a good bit lighter than me) - I can see your roof flexing @1:55. I just got rid of the mold that came in from the slide on my wall and on the other side of the slide was mildew on the floor I ripped up the rug I threw it out I put bleach I was told to use chlorine it was better I live in Florida the weather the nightmare but it dried but now I'm also water remove the Skylight because I want to put a smoke one on cuz living in Florida that gets really hot the bathroom and we had a storm and it blew off the cover to the fan in the bathroom so I'm going to buy a smoke covered one and then I'm going to put that protector cover over it when I bought the trailer I had that cover but I think someone got up there and stole it it's always something but what do I do on the slides do I caulk it first and then put that rubber Sealing because videos that I've been watching people been are washing the roof you swept it... is it better to wash it let it dry and then put that rubber sealing let it dry and do another coat
I have a 2015 Chaparral and I got to stay on top of it it's all I have
Not to criticize anything but am genuinely curious to see how this held up. I know there wasn't much time available to put into it but the directions clearly state this must be washed down, not just broomed off. Most importantly, you are missing the primer the manufacturer states must be laid down first on EPDM roofs (curiously primer not needed if its going on metal roof).
I agree, EPDM needs primer, TPO not. What is it here?
I don't see the stuff used, u said you added links
What about rhino liner?
My friend did that . First long trip he took someone ran into him .It was a total loss.
How did the tape hold up through the seasons?
Held up great!
I’m skeptical about getting on my camper roof as there is not a ladder for it. Thoughts?
You will need to use a separate ladder
Why didn't you spray wash it before painting?
Need to power wash first not just sweep
Big duh 😂
Not true. Pressure washer can be to much water and pressure and makes things worse
Wax and grease remover after a general wash is the best method

You never power wash a roof liner, especially an old one.
