- Pascal Rogé - “Gymnopédie No. 1”, Erik Satie
The eminent French pianist and Steinway Artist Pascal Rogé performs Erik Satie’s timeless work of tranquility, “Gymnopédie No. 1,” at New York City’s Steinway Hall. Satie’s most celebrated gem, which is the soundtrack to all your favorite indie films, is deceptively simple in that the melody - unbeknownst to the listener - begins on the second beat (in 3/4 time). Rogé’s gentle use of rubato adds to the aura of uncertainty.

Finally an interpretation where the piano keys are not hammered. Its subtle sensual and nice
Moest of Satie’s compositions basically show that music doesn’t need to be complicated to be beautiful!
"beautiful" what does it mean? You don't know
@@dettomicco84 If you write this pathetic a question you are clearly the one who doesn’t know what beauty is. Kind regards.
very refreshing. sometimes when people play this they sound like they’re asleep playing it. he is wandering through the song and exploring it
the composer notes literally say to play this "slow and painful" lol
I like this performance
He's an artist not a robot, he doesn't need a metronome. It's called rubato and he's using it to be more expressive.
Faster than I'm used to hearing it, but I like his interpretation here.
it is called non musical. It sounds like a kid who hasn't learned meter yet.
@@based9930 you just can't keep time with it because you're a noob
@@NismoDJ20 It is out of time.
Right? Imagine being stuck to the rules forever. One must simply know when and how to break them. Pascal does that very well with this one
Whoever uses a metronome for this piece doesn't have any cow idea of this piece.
I don't play piano but I really like this one. it makes me feel peace and happiness
Im currently learning this piece. It calms me down at times like this :)
I love this interpretation. I'm learning how to play this myself
El mejor piano para cualquier obra de arte.....con el debido respeto.
A bit fast for me but still a very good interpretation.
D' accord.
agreed, too fast and sans pain
Yup
Personally, I like the fast version because of chrome music lab, and it's nostalgic. This isn't fast enough though.(you can find the song in piano roll)
Yeah I thought that as soon as he started.
Wonderful! I love this piece!
Sorry I’m soo late. This rendition makes sense! Others I’ve heard, I liked the beginning and then it gets lost, and due to my ability to hear harmonies and pitches, it can be like nails skreeechhing down a chalkboard! The tempos are a perfect variety. It reminds me of watching Clouds float, drift and change their shapes…within seconds it’s different. The same with Sunsets painted across the Sky. So Beautiful & Eloquently played with so much expression. Thank you so much for teaching me. I love the simplicity of this piece🌹🤍🦢
La composición más hermosa de Erik Satie.
Le premier CD que j’ai acheté, c’est celui de pascal ROGE enregistrement de 1984 editeur DECA avec bien entendu les Gymnopedies et autres pièces pour piano de Erik SATIE.
Wow how you bring out the harmony... Love waking up to these videos, wonderful
Hello,
Thank you very much for this beautiful piano music !
I select it for my playlist Famous french classical pianists.
All the best !
Jean-Charles Bourquin
Beautiful interpretation. Makes me want to get a piano again. I play by ear so it would take a while to learn but what a piece to add to repertoire!
A beautiful interpretation!
All you expert tickler critics out there... have any of you actually tried to PERFORM this? Realize Satie composed a piece incredibly subtle and difficult to interpret with its dreamy rhythm. Metronome or not, it takes decades of play, a superb sense of timing and an exquisite touch to approach its subtle intricacy e.g. Perfection. I'm waiting to hear your masterful renditions. Still waiting. Posers.
lol they just based it on what they hear
Lol i play that but I admit that I don't like his interpretation. It is not lent and doloroux
@@etudeando exactly, the opening notes are slow and painful, this is played well but misses that feeling.
@@weedanwine Disagree. Instead of it being steady BUM bum LH, he's accenting the chords perfectly with the melody. The right hand is meandering and leading. Spicy. Very rubato but I love it.
Probably on the greatest recorded interpreter of Satie. The flow is push-ups for the soul.
ADRIANEE !!!!
Pour des danseuses un magnifique adage.
👏👏👏👏👏👌
That was lovely.
Прекрасно ❤
They play this in episode 2 of Komi can't communicate
Tempo is a bit fast for my liking but still very well played, love the softer style and the pauses between some of the notes.
I really like the tempo push and pull
Muy hermosa, en mi opinión fue muy rápida, y no me producía esa cesación de tristeza.
very nicely played! I just started playing piano, and uploaded my first song to CZcams. It is called "Two Moons Apart." Hope it sounds good to someone out there :) Thanks!

Pour danseuses un bel adage.
Au moins c est un humain qui joue la plupart du temps les pianistes jouent selon un code défini entre un début et une fin ici on entend celui qui joue bravo
Wasn’t this one of the Final Fantasy episodes themes? Sounds so familiar
There is a song in Final Fantasy that uses a similar melancholic chord progression, I guess it is inspired in this song
This music existed before video games
Not as inspiring as the song, "96 Tears," by Question Mark and the Mysterians, but it's pretty darn good.
The spacing between notes is very weird to me. The melody feels rushed.
Very beautiful but a bit to fast ❤

Satie did not intend this piece to be sad or emotional, but to be "objective"-- totally cold, like a distant satellite.
Satie's instructions for playing his pieces was often perplexing, often hilarious.
It literally says "lent et douloureux"
@@vu9306- "Lent" means "slow." Bernstein is the person who made the point I raised here. Take it up with him, Mr. or Mrs. Expert.
@@drgaryb13 i know what lent means and douloureux means? How can douloureux (painful) not be sad or emotional but 'objective'?
@vu9306 - It's a great point. I will revisit how Bernstein explained this.
You see? Minecraft is beautiful ❤
Can't believe this is the same Pascal Rogé who I've heard playing Satie with the most beautiful languid tempo on various recordings.
Absolutely awful performance.
His tempo is constantly changing even from a natural perception, it’s bad
Whats wrong with tempo changing, its hid interpretation, stop being insufferable
Please, give the guy metronome.
Please, keep your metronome.
What a stupid thing to say.
the piano is amazing, but the performer simply can't keep the rhythm stead.
Rubato
@@Romany1111 yes, but not cleverly applied here. piece is extremely slow, it ruins the great line and structure. he could have kept left hand stead and rubato only in right hand.
bof
Too fast. He doesn't get it.
Rubato
@@kuriousissa548 Playing all of it too fast isn't rubato.
@@based9930 i dont think he played all of it too fast but yes some parts were fast
@@kuriousissa548 The score is marked "painfully slow". This is nowhere close to that.
