    Ships typically float on top of the ocean and don't travel underwater. A proper airship thus should float at the very top of the atmosphere, with its superstructure in the vacuum of space. A more proper name for these things is "air submarines."

    Some years ago my father who is now 99, told me he and a friend, (I'll have to find the name) were rabbit hunting in the marshland west of south ave on Staten Island. They were both carrying 22 cal rifles, when the Hindenburg passed over head on its way to New Jersey. His friend was of Polish decent and according to my dad took a potshot at it cursing the Nazis as he did. Now my dad said the Hindenburg looked to be about 8 foot long from the ground which would have put it well within the range of the 22 rifle. I doubt it had any effect but it's a bit of info most people do not have.

    • @hendrickstoops3591
      @hendrickstoops3591 Před 3 lety +75

      There are a few stories of people taking potshots at the Hindenburg, although you’re right to suggest that they never had any effect (shooting at an airship, even one filled with hydrogen, *even with incendiary bullets* won’t really do all that much). A small note - there’s no way the ship was that low at that point in its flight - it’d only go that low Immediately before landing, so there’s a good chance that LZ-129’s massive size played a bit of an optical trick on your father and his friend.

    Another random fact about the telescope. Losing it also lost the biggest active telescope. most telescopes are "passive", meaning you point the thing at what you want to look at and collect light from it. Active telescopes are like radar and "ping" EM waves off of what you point it at. Not useful for interstellar things, with lightyears getting in the way, but great for things in the solar system. THis one was 420 kilowatts, which for radar is a lot. Losing this makes asteroids more difficult to learn about, as we cannot shine a light on them to look at it, relying on incident from it instead, and unlike movies, asteroids are dark. They range in shades, but still fall in the "concrete to asphalt" scale of colours, compared to paper white.

    About Arecibo:
    The telescope wasn't in great shape because of the hurricane, some earthquakes, and it being difficult to get supplies and trained people out to Arecibo to do the actual repairs. (also repairs usually mean shutting down the telescope which means no one is paying for observing time which means the telescope has less funding to do repairs). It was still managing with some abilities off line waiting for repairs and one of the auxiliary cables snapped and put a hole through the dish (I believe that's the smaller break at the bottom of the picture you have on the slides).
    People went out, looked at the damage, said it was repairable but it'd take a bit. Then another cable snapped and people went "okay we're going to do a controlled demolition". Then a third cable snapped and the whole thing collapsed into the dish and they went "Well I guess it's done that itself".
    Arecibo's been up for a long time and it's not the first radio telescope collapse to happen (the 300ft at Green Bank collapsed in 1993 I believe and in fact, collapsed on to the building where the telescope operator was) but it really sucks.
    The VLA is also made up of old telescopes but ALMA, the GBT, and FAST are pretty new in that they've been up for fewer than 20 years so I've got my fingers crossed for preemptive maintenance and no more collapses for a while.

      That warning is still being shown today (Jan 2024) and, yeah, it seems a little unnecessary to me…
      I'm guessing it's due to this, at 36:14:
      *“… and in 1882 [Baptiste Jules Henri Jacques Giffard] killed himself.”*
      In context, that seemed completely fine and unlikely to be problematic (it wasn't _glorifying_ or _encouraging_ it), but I'm thankfully not triggered by that subject - despite my various mental health issues - so it's not really my place to judge the merit of that warning's placement…
      (Gods, Internet culture has totally ruined “triggered”, hasn't it? I feel kinda gross using that term _correctly, sincerely,_ and _in its proper context_ 😣)

      … oh, there's also mention of self-harm in _the last 3 minutes_ (or ~1.6%) - at 3:00:05. Given that, I suppose the warning is slightly more justified 🤷‍♀️

    I've worn glasses since I was 5 years old. I've tried contacts and couldn't stand them - they changed my morning routine from rolling out of bed, brushing my hair, and getting dressed within 10 minutes to adding an additional 10-15 min to put the contacts in. This is the same reason I thanked all the gods that my skin allergies prevent me from wearing makeup - I just don't have time for that shit.

    Thanks to the Wagner Accordion commentary, I have imagined the zeppelin-strikes-building-and-bounces-harmlessly-away scene with a Looney-Tunes squeeze-box sound effect to accompany it. MY DAY IS MADE.

    I'm still catching up to old episodes (being a recent subscriber), but I saw this go up and had to say: we have a piece of the hindenburg's molten aluminum encased in lucite because my grandfather just happened to be on a cross-country trip to visit family in New Jersey, and was just a few miles from the crash site when it happened; he and his family went the next morning and picked up some pieces, one of which we still have in our possession!
