Alex Flies his Mini Cub First Solo Flight

- My buddy Alex, who started flying FPV soon after seeing my Skywalker setup and watching my videos on this channel, has now followed me into the full-size arena!
He bought a used Mini Cub with a rebuilt 503 Rotax engine for a good price. Then he did some work on it for a month or so, fixing the instrument panel, seat, yoke, etc. A few days ago he soloed it for the first time! So now both of us have transitioned from FPV models to full-size aircraft! Fun!
Watch as Alex takes to the skies in his new (to him) Mini Cub!
For those of you that are keeping track, Alex is the same FPV pilot that I featured in my "FPV Grumpy Cat meets FPV Cub" video a few months ago! Alex was flying the little yellow FPV Cub in that video. I can tell you, Alex is thrilled to be flying a real Cub these days! Congratulations Alex!
You are a natural pilot even wheeled in on a maiden. Living the dream!
Don’t worry about the worry warts or the naysayers. They’re just jealous! Great looking little plane and good job flying her. I was lucky enough to learn in a J3. What a wonderful plane and still my favorite. I worked at an FBO from age 14 and was paid in flying time. Of course I couldn’t solo till 16 so after I could fly the plane my instructor spent most of my time playing around doing things we shouldn’t do. Brings back great memories for an old man. Thanks for sharing your dream.
Absolutely awesome and cute! Those babies are going to be pilots like Papa! I like the airplane very much!
I’ve driven past that strip thousands of times and never seen anybody using it. Nice video.
Congrats on a great accomplishment. Specially with a 14-15 kt wind. Sure brought back 50 year old good memories of my special day in a 7AC.
Congratulations, Alex! You're living my dream. Way to go!
I would like to do that.I have built two tiny " experimental " airplanes that were confiscated by the FAA.
Why were they confiscated ?
@@Brantley169
@@Brantley169 You're just gonna leave us hanging? Storry, what happened?
Nice job all the way.........very cool relaxed look on landing...........and the kids are a 10+ in cuteness...........say hi to Tim up there...........
Hah! I recognize that little bitty "airport" in Oregon. Bravo for one of our own!
I use to have dreams as a little boy of flying out of our paved driveway in a MINI PLANE like this!😃😐
I soloed in a Taylor Craft in 1954. I was nervous but everything went well. I did bounce a couple of times . A friend of mine soloed right after me. He was about to touch down when he flared off to the right, flew between two hangers, and finally got on track, went around and came in ok the second try. Our field had a large highway overpass at one end and grain elevators at the other - made it fun for take off and landing. Anther friend had an AT-6 who he wrapped around a telephone pole after barely clearing the overpass - he lived!
Handled that crosswind like a champ
Congrats Man on ya first Solo, its fun and at least it something you'll love ,plus the lovely scenery .
Sassy looking little aircraft.... Miles of smiles, I'm sure...! Thanks for a nice Vid, Gordon
GREAT BUILD ALEX = LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. I would paint that baby red or blue or green.
Looking Good!!
Wow, I can't believe some of the response u were getting. I grew up on a small grass strips runways. My dad built two experimental aircraft. One fabric and fiberglass. It was called a volksplane, a single seater with a converted Volkswagen engine, thus the volksplane. It had a bobber gas moniter just like yours. Open cockpit, I mean my old man was tall and to me a 11year old kid it looked like he was sticking right out there. I helped him build it, pushing the large needle thu the wing at the ribs I got to see all aspects of the build. The second was a aluminum build , called the Ginnies Tiny. Same kind of engine. I got my check outs in Cubs, Super Cubs with pontunes and our fav, and eventually mine a Cetabria Decathlon, yellow with white strips. That was so much fun, u would be working up a sweat looping and rolling around. So don't let the wannabees bring u down. Go flying and have a ball. Our favorite thing to do is to go to the flyins and have a great breakfast with real pilots.
@Randy Hodder I have heard that "they" are consider just that. I dont know what the weight gain will be however this is what I have heard. That and the LSA weight also would be increased. We shall see. But you are so correct a 50lb addition would be great because of the more choices of engines and powerplants available.
I built a VP2 ( side by side two place) years ago
@Randy Hodder How about allowing for more fuel too!
Thank you very much for sharing your completed dream with me. Job, well done. ! Long before my birth my father flew a 51d Mustang in the 8th Air Force 111 tactical Recon. Many decades later I had a personal Hands-On taste with a Cessna Skyhawk ll. It was love at first flight. But bills came in and the dream went flat. Flying seem simple. It embraces freedom that all souls crave yet so few know. Enter this age. Technology is a gòod thing in the cockpit, but the paperwork to fly it could choke even mightiest engines. Just before looking at your video. I was looking at the retrofitting of an instrument panel. I was ready to jump off the roof of my apartment building. Rules and regs, forced compliance. And I then I saw your simplistic functional fun creation. It is what Aviation should be. You build. You fly. You Feel Complete! Again Congratulations, and thank you.
That Was Great!!!
Awesome flight, from one pilot to another!
Amazing and awesome old flying machine...(in a GREAT way)..☺️☺️👍👍👍
Great video and a beautiful little plane you have built.
Ignore those criticizing his decisions. Life is a balance of risk and safety, and we all have our boundary lines. If a few people didn't make decisions like this a few hundred years ago, we wouldn't have been flying yet.
Fantastic! DAY For Flying
That landing was a greaser. Beautiful. Congrats
No doubt Military Man! Thank you Sir! Great Pilot!
He's Way Up There!!
Very cool to see. Started watching your chanel for fpv, stayed for real planes. :)
Very nice bird. Flying back when it was a simpler time.
nice flight!!! and a super landing, happy landing!
So Exciting!
One day!
I am pumped seeing this!! Congrats my man awesome solo. I got to see you fly with a few hours under your belt and your landings have already improved. Cant wait for some more formation flying with Doug up with us next time. You guys were totally right, i'm hooked, been talking about it all day!!
Great video and plane. Thank you.
The thumbnail caught my eye. lol... It's funny you mention fpv in the description. My first Rc plane was a Super Cub. I ended up painting, damn near, the same color green stripe! Great video, and belated congrats to Alex.
Congrats
Sky!! Pretty Clear
Very cool first flight - nice!
Beautiful!! Great JOB, Roger!!!
I have to fly my R C cub at least once... before moving up to a mini cub........but Im Ready!!! Very Cool
Fantastic!! COOL
That was a nice landing you did
Congratulations to your friend :)
He looks like sometimes to Josh Bixler lol
Have a great new week
ABMNS PRODUCTION Hey he does look like Josh Bixler a bit!
That was an awesome first flight, dude! Congrats and enjoy the plane, it's nice looking mini beast!
Congratulations on the first flight belated! Beautiful plane. I live on Mt. Tom and saw the background scenery. Just stumbled on your video surfing the Tube. I'm a pilot too. EAA out of Creswell.
Glad you completed it and was able to get it in the air. My brother built one and had it complete except for putting the skin on the wings. He only had a few months work left when he suddenly passed away last September. Enjoy your aircraft and beautiful family. You're a lucky guy.
buz butler ...sorry for your loss.
Мои поздравления! Воплотил мою мечту в реальность! =)
Good job man.
The fuselage fabric needs to be removed, the structure inspected, new bulkhead and stringers installed and new fabric installed.
GOOD JOB and NICE FAMILY.
MAN! I am happy for you!
Russia car crashes
Ok kids when you see a small, very small ball of fire, Daddy has made a landing and the insurance company will be visiting us.
Very nice
Congratulations! such a smooth flight ops. .
Awesome, thank you for posting this!
It brings back memories.
Absolutely greased it!!!! Well done!!!!
So awesome, he didn’t want to come down
Love it, lil baby cakes are doing pre-flight check.
Good for you , well done !!!
OK DADDY IS GOING UP! Man, his wife didn't even flinch! Did he just sign a life insurance policy that day?
She just trust him...
Sometimes is it better to not say what you think to not make him nervous.
I think she did very well
That is cruel. Go away.
Life insurance, my first thought, she didn't hesitate.
She got a lover
She knows him , loves him and has the greatest confidence in his abilities. A really lovely girl.
congrats Alex
Will See you on NEXT ONE!!!
COMEING DOWN!!
Congratulations! Great video.
Just plain sweet.
Thank for taking us along beautiful your To be envede. What was your crushing speed ?
Thought that looked like central Oregon. We drove past one of these, at 45 mph, in my F150 and the draft made it airborne!
Awesome!!! Great job!!!
Never saw an aircraft with a pull start before, pretty cool. Needs tundra tires; very, very, light ones.
like that little plane. pull start, pump gas, direct read fuel gauge, looks simple. i'm into simple. Not a lot to break or have electrical failures . the landing lite is a 4 cell ray-o-vac. lol
Making A Turn!!
I thought for sure he was going to say 'Tell my wife I love her very much- she kno oh oh oooohs." LOL
Oh yeah Tom Cruise , " Highway To The I've lost my mind Zone" lol
Lmao.
Nice job guys 😉
yes yes that was awesome like it.
Alright!! We Have Lift OFF
Well done I would check the canvas over the tail it’s showing creases meaning there could be twisting going on in the wooden fuse , would be good to check , nic3 plane good flight
That mini cub us very elegant, but I always felt that those type of old wing tips could be greatly improved, as nature's own evolution has shown how to optimise the wing tips it. In all fins and tails of fish, including dolphins and whales and also all types of birds, both the leading and trailing edges of their wing or fin or tail are RAKED BACK. The dynamics at the wing tips are much better if at the wing tips both the leading and trailing edges are raked back . I do find it interesting how such curves at wing tips were not included before and we had to wait such a long time . I like the wing tips on the modern 777 and others. I feel that early designers only noted the outer line of the wing tip in birds and so they just copied the outer outline as in the Hurricane and the Spitfire which did have amongst other defects a high speed stall due to the trailing edge at the wing tip raking forward. In fact the ME109, the P51 Mustang and the Spitfire itself had its wing clipped . The dynamics around the wing tips are very interesting and I designed sea propellers where not only the wing tips were made as I stated, but also around the hub to about .3 of the radius of the prop, the pitch was reduced to that of the fastest speed of the craft and through that we gained a better standing start. The inner part of the prop at slow speed operates more like a paddle wheel rather than a propeller so one can modify it as I stated to gain some advantage, after all the main propulsion comes from the outer 0.7 of the radius of the prop.
Many thanks, Carmel. I appreciate your findings.
Fuselage looks more like a Stinson with a cub tail and Taylor wings nice
LOL "even got a place back here for your cat or your dog!"
One nice little bird, bet she flys smoth
Fun bird. Good luck
I enjoyed the flight.
Alright!!!
Outstanding. A man can dream :(
Alex needs to hold the stick back all the way during taxi, would not want to see a nose over!
cool little plane, and so good to see you guys having fun!
I noticed that also.
Yeah I noticed it too but great control anyway
yes he should but it's his first solo . So he has a lot on his mind . But did you notice when he taxies back he does keep the stick back so the elevators are up.
FPVREVIEWS As a conventional gear pilot the stick is held relative to the direction the wind is blowing. Sometimes all the way back sometimes all the way forward sometimes in the middle to the left or to the right or any combination. As a general rule stick on the way back in the lap does keep the tail down but again I can depend.
what a beautiful little bird. And what a nice landing. here in my part of heaven there are a lot of simular little aircraft called CHUCK BIRDS. A fellow by the name of Chuck Beeson designto fly,
ed them after the single seat Pietenpol called a SKYSCOUT. my guess them and this georgous little bird are very much the same
Great job Alex now you are next.
***** Yep he is!
hey, you really stuck that landing!!
Damn fine job!!!
Should put an old school glasspack muffler on her. Sound like an old hot rod.
DUDE KISS THE BABY!!!!!
Your radio was the problem for communications. The handheld one on the ground was clear, as was the Skyhawks. Simple elimination, next flight, switch to the handheld on the ground. If still bad news, it has to be some grounding problem in your aircraft.
Interesting shovel handle stick grip! LOL I was considering one too for my FP 404
He made that thing for$75.00 bucks
Plane-in-a-box. That fuselage skin looks a bit slack on the rear dude. Tissue paper and dope? 😂 good job.done some floating about in the past myself.
I want.
Gotta wonder what kinda mileage you get
Awesome ! That's got to be a great feeling, first flight... just curious ,what kind of engine do you have in it ?
good fly man
Nice landing in that flying lawn mower. =)
NO nice landing full stop !!!!
So, the bobber (Fuel level) is actually a float from a carburetor. An old Rochester perhaps?
Yup ! good eye. That's a float from a Quadrajet :-)
Yeah. Looked like an old Qjet.
looks like a Hipps J3 kitten far 103 legal ultralight.
Great Fun, Cool and Funny ! Why the few dislikes ... ? Oh wait I know : Those whom survived a rectal birth perhaps
Jealousy is the oldest of human emotions, and has wreaked utter havoc throughout history. At least they are not swinging clubs or throwing spears anymore, for the most part...
Good reply. Enjoy and keep that little beauty.
