    The Happy Tarot is the deck that I've worked with almost exclusively for the past 18 months, through the "plague." It gives me the messages I need to hear, but in a "bedside manner" that has been so supportive through this difficult time. I've got the original version and the new borderless version. I love them both.

    And i JUST bought the Morgan Greer yesterday so I might be biased, but don’t let it go! Maybe make a deep dive video with it? (She asked selfishly 😂)

    This is a really interesting video. In my personal opinion, a "RWS clone" is any colour variation of the original Pamela Colman Smith artwork (for example: the Centennial, the Radiant, the Reflective, the Universal, the yellow box, the "Dirty Pam", the Gold & Black edition, etc...). Basically for me, a clone is a facsimile or a photo-copy of the original RWS, because in science a clone is an exact genetic replica of the original, with 100% the same DNA. So every other deck that is similar or closely follows the RWS artwork, but is not using the original linework by Pixie, would be a "RWS inspired" deck (for example: the Modern Witch, the Morgan Greer, This Might Hurt, Crystal Unicorn, the Little Buddha, etc).

    Oh, when I saw the Happy Tarot in that list I felt like I was watching a thriller and felt so relieved when it stayed in your collection. Don't even know why, I mean it's not mine😅 However, that is, hands down my favorite RWS clone

    My friend got the Crystal Unicorn Tarot coloring book for me, she knows I’m a sucker for Unicorns!🦄 It was a really interesting experience. I didn’t have the intention to bond with the deck when I started, just using it for some de-stressing and what not. But what was really interesting was that my inner child came out, and I also remembered things that I had long forgotten, and I was able to take a further glimpse into my childhood. So I would actually recommend it!

    Happy smiles -- I'm not the only one who feels chilly towards the original RWS art. Thank GOODNESS, too, because that was what drove me into the glorious world of tarot art that makes my heart sing. Thanks for your reflections on the most RWS portion of your collection, showing how some decks repeat, and other decks rhyme.

    To me a RWS clone has to be really true to Pixie’s art like maybe the Albano Waite or the Golden Rider or Radiant Wise Spirit. The others you showed I would call RWS “inspired” . So interesting to see how we each categorize these things.

    • @annelyle5474
      @annelyle5474 Před 2 lety +1

      There's definitely a spectrum from "could have been traced from Pixie's art" through "redrawn in all the same poses" to "essentially the same symbolism but reimagined with elephants/unicorns/porntaches/whatever" 😀

    The clone I love to work with is the Moon Baby Tarot. It is a fairly recent release based on the 70’s Hoi Polloi Tarot. I absolutely love it! I don’t really know why, it’s the only pretty true clone I feel this way for. The cards are a bit zoomed in, the backgrounds are a bit simpler, and the skin color is darker so they are more brown-skinned. I dig it. The backs a gorgeous and it has a pale pink edge. It is so special.

    I was minor panicking when you started going through the Crystal Unicorn deck 🤣
    I have such a weird relationship with Morgan Greer. I love the vibe and illustrations theoretically, but I kind of hate reading with it. The super up close perspective is just to much for some reason. But I keep trying…
    I love hearing how people feel about a deck after working with it for a while, like more of a review rather than a walk through. If you do decide to do more videos specifically about that, I’m totally here for it 😊

  • @tigerlybalm
    @tigerlybalm Před 2 lety +8

    Would you ever consider doing a THIS or THAT where your This Might Hurt deck faces off against the Modern Witch deck? 17:15 The idea only came to me when you described the MW as "RWS, really really diverse" which seems like it would fit a similar category to the TMH, even if TMH isn't a RWS clone.
    I don't mean to sound like you should further declutter your collection at all! I'm just curious/thought I'd put it out there (and sometimes both decks in a THIS or THAT situation remain in your collection 💜)

    • @Lisa_Papez
      @Lisa_Papez  Před 2 lety +1

    The Morgan-Greer is one of my favourites, I love its warmth and serenity. I wouldn't call it a clone. The artist obviously based his art on the RWS scenes but interpreted them in his own style.
    I don't like the word clone. Artists don't produce clones. They're influenced by other artists but they don't simply copy and paste.

  • @SunsetBoughTarot
    @SunsetBoughTarot Před 2 lety +7

    I define a “clone” the same way you do….not Pixie’s actual art and maybe different characters but with the exact same scenes, poses, symbolism etc. From the beginning, Pixie’s art has been republished with different colorations and to me those are all Smith-Waite decks and not Smith-Waite “clones” because it’s still the original Smith art, so I don’t consider a mere recoloration of the RWS to be a “clone” (otherwise any RWS deck that’s not the Pam A would be a clone!) So the SmithTiny or the Crystal Unicorn are clones in my opinion. The Morgan Greer on the other hand is RWS inspired but not a clone, I feel, because the zoomed in nature of the images means they really aren’t the same scenes or poses in most of the cards-for example, lots of characters that are facing straight on in the RWS are in profile in the Morgan Greer or vice versa, you can’t see who’s seated or who’s standing, etc. So not a clone. Idk, that’s just how I think about it 🤷‍♀️😆

I absolutely love the readings I get from the Morgan Greer, though not necessarily drawn to the art. I learned tarot using the Robin Wood, and it was my only deck for years. Aw that tiny tarot reminds me of all the playmobile people I bought my kids for toys. The Little Budda is adorable. The Happy tarot is super cute, like if tarot was a candy land video game. Hard to say what is a RWS clone vs RWS based system. I think that terminology has been a bit confusing for myself and others. I rehomed my unicorn tarot, I realized I bought it because of the joy it brought others. I'm thinking of getting the way of the panda because I've always loved pandas, it's more me! Enjoyed the sneak peaks.

    I used to hate RWS too. I didn't like the yellows and some weird lines in the drawings. I bought the AGM E Waite premium pocket edition and I start changing my mind. So I got the Centennial too because of the colors but I never use that one. Before that I use the Aquarian and the Morgan Greer two amazing kind of clones because I love their art. The Morgan Greer devil and Death I adore them. I start reading with this one I even have dreams with some cards. But is a good system to have in mind if you don't like numbers enough for using more TdM.

    I always say that the ones with 70 or more cards with matching scenes are clones. The others I’ve been calling RWS inspired. Whatever that means lol. • @Ascillian369
    @Ascillian369 Před 2 lety

    I am also someone who doesn't really click with the RWS, and so a lot of decks that draw heavily from it (whether they are a true clone or not) are very iffy for me as well. And yet, my very first deck (which I still adore) is the Cosmic tarot, and I feel it's very clonish (though a few people have said they don't consider it a clone).
    I think I agree with you, that a clone is one where the scene is instantly recognizable as the same scene...almost like if you blocked it out in sketch form you would have the same card...just the details are changed. But once you start moving people into different positions or changing the setting around the figures, it's not really a clone anymore.
    I will definitely have to keep an eye out for if you decide to rehome the Little Buddha tarot, I still think a part of me regrets not backing that one (and as cute as the Happy tarot is, it's a bit too candy forward for me lol I'm just not a candy person, though the figures on it are super cute!)

  • @cheapwitch

    I only have the Modern Witch when it comes to clones because I also don't really get on with the imagery of the trad RWS. But I love that one so much so it really makes me feel like I'll never need another one with the same imagery.

  • @Craftistemv
    @Craftistemv Před měsícem

    I believe I once saw a rendition of a RWS based tarot deck in which the point of view of the imagery was shown. The moon card was a card with a hand dipping in the water I believe, the tower card in the POV of the people falling down... Do you have any idea about which deck I am talking about? It might not be RWS but I think it was. Did I see this here on your channel?

  • @toadstooltarot
    @toadstooltarot Před 2 lety +1

    I must have more than a dozen of what I call Rider Waite Smith 'versions' in various colors and textures. But, I can only think of one clone that I have which is the Groovy Waite. Some of the ones you mentioned seem like 'demi-clones' or 'semi-clones'. I do have the Moon Baby Tarot, but am not sure if I consider it a clone. I've been tempted by the Morgan Greer a number of times but just can't get into the color palette. The yellows are more like ochre and the reds are like burgundy and I just can't connect with that. I also know what you mean about having beautiful decks that you love the look of, but just never seem to reach for them. I'm wondering if my Giuliano Costa decks (Mystical, Pre-Raphaelite, and now Jack-O-Lantern) are considered clones. I didn't reach for any of those for a long time, but with the recent release of the Jack-O-Lantern, I'm finding a new love for the Pre-Raphaelite and using it all over again).

    I just can't get along with the RWS Tarot. I've never liked the artwork, and seeing it everywhere definitely didn't help. I bought the Centennial tin version hoping it would show me what I was missing, but I hardly ever used it and eventually put it in my closet along with my other neglected decks. I can't even look at most clones, such as the Modern Witch, without having a visceral "No!" reaction. The only clones I have are the Happy Tarot and the Morgan-Greer Tarot because the former is adorable and the people in the latter look much friendlier than in the original. Sorry for the rant, but sometimes it seems like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like this deck.

  • @elkins4406
    @elkins4406 Před 2 lety

    For whatever it's worth, I store my (much loved!) Morgan Greer deck in a different drawer than my RWS Clones. Instead, I keep it one drawer down, with my "Traditional RWS-Style" decks, many of which are admittedly 'almost-but-not-quite-RWS-clones.' Still, there are just enough differences for me not to consider it a clone. I do count Modern Witch as a clone, though. So I guess my personal dividing line lies somewhere between those two decks.
    It's also possibly significant that the Morgan-Greer was one of the like six or seven decks I'd ever even heard of when I first acquired a copy of it in the '80s. So possibly the differences seem more pronounced to me than they really are, just because when I first familiarized myself with it, I was aware of so few options.
    ETA: As someone who tends to find a *lot* of things with the "cute" aesthetic unbearably creepy, it's somehow a bit of a relief to me to learn that even you aren't immune to the creep factor of cutesy things, even if you do draw the line in a different place than I do! Yeah, those big black eyes totally give me the willies, too.

I only read the RWS once or study with. I will always force myself to use a deck before I declutter, if I last the entire week they stay if they don’t and I find it a struggle to read with they go.

    Great decks but I would disagree with your definition of ‘clone’. A clone to me is a recolored version of JUST the RWS line work. IE; Pam’s line work, ie; Pam A, B, C or D. Nothing else. All of the others I consider Rider Waite Smith Inspired. Some, indeed, like the Universal Tarot, are very close, but if you look at the definition of clone, it means to copy ‘exactly.’
    Now, by that definition, people could get picky and say that Pam B and C are not very good copies, but the differences are so nominal that only dweebs like me see the difference. And just one more example: anyone who uses Photoshop clone tool understands that it is cloning the exact image, not just a representation. It’s just not the definition of ‘clone’.
    And, while I love things like the Modern Witch and such, I don’t consider decks like that clones. The images are nicely inspired so one can read them nearly the same, but there are enough differences between the original line work and some of the different images added to the cards that may change the meaning.
    This is why in my classes I have people learn on an actual RWS clone because if you learn on that, you can read so many other RWS INSPIRED decks on the market.
    JMHO, respectfully. But I’m a tarot and language dweeb, so there’s that. ;) Enjoyed your video. Thanks. :)

    Girl you are listing an emotional connection for almost all these decks. When hoarding people list a connection for all the stuff they don't want to let go. My recommendation for decluttering is you just gotta break up with some of these. Yeah, break up. If you want to do decluttering instead of a deck tour, yoy may want to break your heart.
